We loaded ours with TAC powder at 0.7grs below the Mac and it was still compressed. We got 3216 out of a Springfield m1a...
3150 out of my 18" ar10
I need to get some TAC. You’re the 2nd person to tell me it works great for 308 in lighter bullets.
@@hopefulballistics50.0gr tac under 130gr ttsx chronograph @ 3160 20"barrel mod 70. Have no doubt 3200 possible with a max load of 51.1 I'm really loving this Tac stuff 1st time I ever tried it
That little 130 gr Barnes TTSX is a cool bullet.
Yes it is
Just worked up a 30-06 load with this bullet and IMR 4064. With my 26in barrel I'm seeing over 3400fps on a near max charge and tiny little groups. Insane.
@@mountainmanmilitia3806 very nice!
Very impressive !!
I've got a jigsaw with broken blade holder. Made a small box of plywood......jigsaw running. Loading block on top. Just enough vibration to make powder settle. Less crunching, seating compressed loads.
308, 130ttsx basically a 260rem
Nice
I suppose one could argue that the 130gr TTSX is superior to the 150gr TTSX in 308WIN for WT deer and antelope hunting inside of 400yd… there is a conversation to be had there. You don’t need a high sectional density for these smaller animals. The higher velocity of the lighter bullet will provide a much flatter trajectory and more rapid expansion. Hmm…
Yep worth thinking about
I was thinking same thing. Compare factory 130 TTSX .270 to the .308 and they give near identical performance. A lot would say a 130 .270 can take game out to 500 yards. So, a 130 .308 should easily take game at 400 yards. Pretty cool that you can get a .308 to act like a .270 with these light rounds and get a 150/165 to act almost like a .30-06 with similar bullet weights.
There is also the fact copper bullets penetrate much more than their weight in cup and core (lead). This 130 grains bullet will penetrate as much as a 165 grains cup and core and more !
It was interesting to see how the groups walked from horizontal to vertical as the compression increased.
Yep, interesting
My favourite load. Settled at 53gr for same reasons with 5-8 SD. Very quick at 3000fps in 16" tube
Nice!
That’s a really good start Happy hunting
Thank you! Same
One of my loads this past deer season! Well, don't know what powder you used, if you said, I missed it. I tagged a few deer on my dad's place last season. 130 Barnes TTSX, Winchester brass, Fed210M primer, near max load TAC, 3200fps, Factory Tikka T3x. But mine never shot as well as yours which is why I changed barrels and stock. Much better now. When I get my 30.06 back I might test that same bullet in it
W748
Sweet, I used w748
Just earlier today, I did my first hand loading with virgin 308 starline brass, 130grain ttsx, varget, and Remington 9 & 1/2 large rifle primers. Did it with a buddy with lots of reload experience so he set everything up for me. Didn’t do a whole bunch of tinkering/load developing. Just going by his Barnes manual. 49.2 grains compressed load gave me sufficient accuracy and averaged 2965fps out of my 16” sig cross. Rifle season can’t come quick enough!
@@msquared9605 awesome, good luck!
I've been wanting to see videos like this!
Thanks for watching
I use the Barnes VOR-TX in my 7mm-08 in 120 grain. It's impressed me so far. I've always been a die hard ballistic tip man for whitetail but I see the appeal for Barnes.
Let’s see the 30-06!! I have some makers in 130 I wanna try! So this is really helpful
Yep the video is out. 130 TTSX, Big Game, in 30-06.
I seat this bullet .050 off of the lands. Win 748 is 3200 fps in the accuracy charge with cci 200, with Varget not being too far behind.
If you pull the front rest back, grip the forearm, pulling down and back at a 45* angle, your group will improve substantially.
We shoot incredible groups with Win and Rem brass with this bullet. Approximately the same loads work well with the 125g Sierra's, which kill big deer like a bolt of lightening!
Thanks
Love the Starline brass and I think it’s hard to beat at the price point. That being said, the new brass is certainly short on H2O volume. My 30-06 cases were 3 grains below SAAMI spec
Yeah that’s been my experience.
Glad to see it worked out for ya! I was pretty apprehensive when i was doing this load as well 😂
Lol
I had this issue before with ZQI mil-spec once fired brass (my brass). Same exact 130grn ttsx. I emailed Barnes and they said with military brass reduce charge by 10%
Your brass looks exactly how mine did.
Interesting, thanks!
Just got a browning x bolt micro in 308. 20” barrel. Been trying to load up a lighter recoil load. Have been using 125 ssts. Turns out that they don’t like much speed before they act like a varmint bullet. Probably will do fine on deer. The next thing I want to try is 130 ttsx.
I’m starting to believe more in the high speed large diameter copper bullets. My buddy drew a moose tax and he’s going to use a 30-06 150 CX superformance. Can’t wait to see what it does compared to 180 bonded bear claws and 220 round nose that I usually use.
Now I gotta get some of those 130 ttsx bullets to try.
I’m curious to know as well, how that 150 CX compares to your other bullets.
I load a 125 grn nosler in 308 . 50 grns of varget . Its a tac driver .
@@randysmith8604 sweet!
Good groups and shooting, ive never personally had any issues with compressed loads in rifle or pistol, try a drop tube to help settle the powder better in the case, I have also seen a loss of velocity at max as opposed to a grain or two below max with various powders and bullet combos
That’s interesting. I saw that the other day with a hot 22-250 load. The last and hottest load went down in velocity.
Have seen it in 300 win mag, 41 rem mag, 30-30 to name a few, also, if you have some, try reloader 15, imr 4064, h414 or w760 with the 130s in the 06
I use RL17 in my 270 win and my WSM it seems to be made with a little bit of magic
2.845 OAL, 48.5gr Varget, Norma Brass, 3044 fps, ~0.7 MOA out of my axis II with a 22” barrel. Never used it to hunt because I burned through them due to some scope issues and switched to hammer bullets before taking that rifle out. I wouldn’t doubt it to be a very effective performer on whitetails at typical ranges.
Right on, thanks!
How those hammer bullets treating you? Are they 130 or 135? Did you stick with Varget 48.5? Any signs of pressure?
@@hikenmikes8262 No signs of pressure for the 130 ttsx with 48.5 gr Varget. That's probably a grain or so off max with non-Winchester (which has higher capacity than most) brass. Hammers shoot well, but their BC numbers can't be trusted and are generally rather inflated. I have the 137. If you want to run TTSX the 130 is good if your chamber/mag are short. If you have the length, the 168gr TTSX is the best 30 cal bullet for the 308 win. It expands at a lower impact velocity (1500 fps) than the rest of the 30's that you can reasonably shoot (the 200gr LRX may tie it, but a 308 won't shoot it fast enough to matter). The 175gr LRX is a close second. The 150 and 165 should be avoided for 308.
@@Snailz5thanks for the information! I have a box of Cutting Edge Bullets raptor 135gr for a 308 lever action and was trying to get a good starting point.
@@hikenmikes8262 if you want to chase speed, Leverevolution yeets them pretty good and has shot well for multiple bullets for me. TAC is also fast, but I've had trouble finding consistent, accurate loads. CFE 223 and my gun hate each other. Benchmark can produce small groups and is very temp stable, but it gives up speed to varget. I have StaBall match, but haven't shot it yet, but have heard good things. H4895, N135, or N140 would work well for a 135gr bullet. 308 is the window of a lot of great powders.
I have loaded these 130gn Barnes TTSX with 46.7gn Lovex D073.5 and get 3021ft/s out of my 20 inch Barrel thats plenty enough for me max load would be around 47.9gn casefill is around 92% with Bullet inside so not nearly as full as yours, out of a 23-24 inch Barrel it would be around your numbers.
They work great on Roe, Red- Fallowdeer and Wildboar
Very nice! Thanks.
I loaded the 130 ttsx with 47,5gn lovex 73.4. 3200 fps out of.my tikka with 24 inch barrell
Your best load is the first group. Anytime the elevation is consistent that's what you look for.
I think you found the peak of the speed your barrel was able to provide you. With a longer barrel I bet you would have seen a more significant jump in velocity.
You could be right
Pretty good results IMO. Decent velocity. Good stuff. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
I'm glad the Barnes shot well for you. We tried and tried to load for my 7mm-08 and couldn't make them happen.
Every rifle is different
Using CFE223 and the 120gr TTSX, I'm getting 3215 fs out of a 24" barrel and 3090 from a 20. It's not quite a max load listed from Barnes load data. You might consider trying that powder.
@@doghousedon1 this is an older video. I’ve made a more recent video with TAC and 130 TTSX at 3300fps. I’ve also got 2850 with CFE223 with 172 Speer Impacts.

I called Barnes about using their 130 grain TTSX in .270 Winchester yesterday because the powder I have - H4831SC - shows as a compressed load in the Barnes data for the maximum load. I’ve never loaded with compressed powder, but the Barnes tech pretty much told me “don’t worry - be happy.” I asked about using a drop tube and he told me that definitely would help and recommended a specific one (Forster).
Interesting, thanks!
I load nosler accubond and ballistic tip 125grain in starline brass federal match primers and Winchester 748 at max charge and get less that half inch croups in my browning ab3 308 and it is awesome on white tail
Nice!
Sweet load and good shooting. ID just go with the first one.
Probably right, thanks
I loaded up some of those Barnes 130 grains ttsx bullets for my 300 Winchester Magnum. The book said there were supposed to go around 3,450 feet per second. In July I purchased that Garmin xero chronograph and it worked on a lot of other bullets BUT it could not read those Barnes 130 grainers. I notified Garmin and they are trying to figure what is going on.
@@ThomasZangla interesting. I’ve had that happen on 204 Ruger bullets going over 4000 fps.
I don't know how old the barrel is but you will start to lose pressure little and the velocity the longer your throat gets, but the accuracy could hold up even after the barrel has been shot out. I seen a 308 shoot 8,000 rounds. The barrel was slap shot out. It would get about 200 ft. A second slower on velocity but it would shoot bug holes and then one day it didn't LOL
I’ve been loading this bullet too. Getting 2850fps with Varget with an 18” barrel. It
Is ACCURATE too. So very pleased. Did you say what propellant you were using? I may have missed it.
I truly think this bullet is about perfect for whitetail and mule deer.
Id be fine to shoot a big elk with it at the bullet expanding range. I really like this bullet so far. Seems to be devastating.
Do you mind sharing your C.O.A.L?
My ogive to base is 2.236, 50 thou off the lands. I believe the COAL is 2.893, I don’t have that number written down or one loaded to measure.
@@hopefulballisticsthank you Sir
Try 308 175g 45c gr.....you will get better groups and out to 800m - 1000m.....i stack them bulleyes at 600m. Howa M1500 APC 24" barrel 2 stage trigger.
My 1st thought was you may have used 30-06 data in a 308 case as full as that case was .
That’s a logical thought, but not the case.
The Barnes bullets are longer than lead bullets you will always compress loads unless you seat to the lans or use less than the minimum powder charge. I suggest using a ball powder you can get more in the case.
I’m 20 thou off the lands. This was ball powder. I’ve loaded Barnes/monolith bullets before, never had to compress a load. This was a specific case of this particular powder and this cartridge.
@@hopefulballistics i tried loading them for a 300 win mag. I did some compressed loads. They were safe but didn’t care for it so stopped using them bullets. Whats your opinion on the issue. They are good bullets.
@@hopefulballistics that jump should of had plenty of room.
@@randysmith8604 it’s not a bullet issue imo. It’s just the W748 probably wasn’t the right powder for the 308 with the 130 gr TTSX, unless I didn’t care about the velocity.
@@randysmith8604 reviewing it in my head, I think I actually had them at 50 thou from lands. To get the velocity I wanted there wasn’t enough case capacity with the W748.
Barnes suggests an coal of 2.735 for the 130gr ttsx 308win. But yet their factory load measures 2.710,some even a little shorter. Wonder why that is?
Good question. Just to be extra safe and universal, I guess.
@@hopefulballistics just checked another box of their factory load with different lot# measurements varies from 2.710 to 2.715. Maybe I'm just being too nit-picky? After all it is mass produced ammo & shoots decent groups so far
Lotsa loads are compressed on certain calibers. Not a concern if you work up the loads. Varget and tac are poss better modern choice powder. But 748 is great in my brother 308.
I made this video awhile ago. I’ve went back and found tremendous velocity with TAC.
Nothing wrong with those results. Starline brass is good brass....but, I have found the life of the brass is significantly less than higher end brass (lapua, alpha 1, peterson). The primer pockets will be the first to go, maybe 3 to 4 reloads.
Compressed loads are fine. My only caution on compressed loads, especially when shooting mono's, is make sure you are not jamming the bullets in the land. Mono's will create a very dangerous pressure spike if to close to the lands. Like said earlier, 0.050 is my starting point for distance to lands. When compressing loads, you can get some bullets that don't seat as deep as they should. I would be measuring each bullet to confirm.
If you like Mono's, you should look at Hammer Hunter bullets. Extremely accurate and deadly on game. Also very easy to load for. I'm switching all my rifles to mono's in anticipation my state will ban lead bullets.
@@rebel1988yota I always start at 50 thou with monos.
I’m not a fan of compressed loads because it limits the seating depth to tune it in. If you find a bullet that doesn’t like to jump a lot there shouldn’t be an issue though.
Good point
My experience with compressed loads is very limited, 22 hornet and possibly the 243. Different case brands have different capacities which seems odd. Only issue was this summer my hornet's bolt stuck a few times. 243 compressed kicked enough that i don't load them anymore.
Thanks
Use all copper Cavity Back bullets. Best of the best for compressed loads and I've gotten great performance out of their bullets on game.
Thanks
I would try a different powder, should be able to get 3,150-3,200 without being a compressed load...
@@AndrewJohnson-gx5cl in a more recent video I got 3300 with TAC.
What powder are you using? The Barnes data has most of the 130 loads as compressed at Max, but even the 150s are compressed at max for most. Oddly, H335 is not a compressed load at 49.1 grains for the Barnes 130 TTSX and 130 TSX, they both use the same load.
@@constitutionalist4391 w748
Good shooting
Thanks!
Try it with rl 15 or hybrid v 100
At what point is it considered compressed load? Is it at 100% fill minus the volume of projectile, and any amount of powder above the volume of the projectile?
If you find a powder that reaches 100% case fill including the projectile, and no pressure signs, then can you just scoop the brass in the powder without weighing it and call it day? How bad would SD and ES ultimately be if you’re already at 100-110% case fill?
If your bullet is compressing the powder. Case fill and seating depth combined.
3150 fps with a 308 is incredible. Try a magnum primer.
Hey Magnum, primer will just lower the pressure a smidge with a more consistent burn.
Wonder what these would do out of a 300 win mag or 300wsm 😬

Hhmmm... I shoot the 150g they expand down to 2000 fps maybe 1900 fps.. I wanna go to the 168g because they expand down to 1500 fps.. nearly the same ballistics.. fps @600 yards is only 14 fps difference.. but 168g is more than 100 ft-lbs greater.. and at 600 yards the 168 are still moving 1700fps which is 200 more than it needs to expand. But 300 less than is required by the 150g.. thats withe 2900 fps of the muzzle on the 150g and 2730 on the 168g.. and as far as the 130g even at 3100fps @the muzzle, @ 600 yards its 100fps slower than 150g and 168g and more than 200 ftlbs energy loss.. they will all kill, but for elk I think the 168g is a much better choice
