Trip to Monaco GranPrix Formula 1.

When I was 16 I visited a friend who was watching a car race. He told me about a particular corner of the race. The sharp turns and curve of this section immediately interested me. The turn was called Mirabeau (named after the towering building beside it). The area is now named after a hotel whose name I forget.
A quarter of my life later, and when given the opportunity to take an extra week away from my work on a drilling rig in Canada, I made the trip over to Europe and watched a race I had only ever known for that same hairpin turn. As much as I tried beforehand to buy a ticket to see the turn, I wouldn’t afford the room of the hotel - just to perch over a railing and watch cars slow to 50 mph. Instead were purchased a seat at the practice run and a seat along the marine way.
Monaco is situated about 50 km east of Nice, France. Nice, in turn, is 50 km east of Cannes. To my amazement I was able to combine a visit to both well-known spectacles. Within every little region in the south of France (La Sud) there seems to be extraordinary enclaves of very cool things: foods, wines, boating, swimming, nature, fragrances, art. It’s a place I’ve come to reflect back on and alway look forward to.
This trip introduced Formula 1 in a realistic, face to face and motors-in-ears sort of way. I was hooked. The sport has been a pleasure to watch on my phone since, and not only that, but also to combine into trips to other countries that host the sport. Shanghai, Tokyo, and soon Silverstone are races I’ll have seen. Not my intention to collect them all, but adding Monza, Holland and Belgium would be nice.
If you go to Monaco for the race and don’t want to spend too much money, try to get tickets at La Rocher section. You’ll hear and see the race just fine, and can bring your own food and drink. As for a place to stay, check out the waterfront hostel in Cap D’Ail, just across the French border. Both the cheap tickets and the hostel are very difficult to reserve, but like my 5 year wait for a single ticket to Silverstone - it will be worth it!

Finally, and b/c I forgot to add this: Places like The Computer Science Museum in Mountain View, California made me feel stupid; other places can make me feel fat (France, Vietnam, Holland), while places like Cuba can have me feeling rich. Monaco made me think I'm poor, even though I was making the most money I've ever made.
