Musicals like HAMILTON signal a change in the Musical Theatre as an art form - but, also reflect profound changes in society. Musical Theatre expert, Joe Deer, discusses what makes something a game changer in the world’s most popular theatre form and why it matters to the rest of us.
Joe Deer is a distinguished professor of musical theatre and director of the musical theatre initiative at Wright State University. He is an award-winning, internationally recognized teacher, director and author, working with many of the top theater training programs in the world, as well as with Dayton’s Muse Machine and The Human Race Theatre Co. (with whom he is a proud resident artist). Joe is a veteran Broadway dancer, actor and stage manager. He is also the author of Acting in Musical Theatre (co-author, Rocco Dal Vera) and Directing in Musical Theatre. He is married to actress Caitlin Larsen and father to their son, Leo.

I’m sorry but Rent was much more revolutionary than he lead on to believe

@Diamond Tribe it was revolutionary for the style of music to be put into a broadway musical. It also was changed to portray real events that were being ignored at the time. It was one of the first shows to have people of many different races onstage together. It also brought the same type of attraction to broadway like Hamilton is doing now. It’s causing people who have never had an interest in broadway to actually go to the theatre
