Really interesting at 9:50 about the resistor being detected to select direction. Is this the same mechanism for choosing between door 1 and 2 release?
Hi Crabsoft: If you have a 2 Entry Door System - You must have either a Model 466 - 2nd Door Control Module or a Model 467 Timer Module installed in the 478. The circuity that controls the Door Release is more complex than "just a resistor" but a resistor is used to change voltages within the circuit when the Door Release Switch is activated - Chris
Even, if my English is not very good because I'm not fluently bilingual, the explanation was clear and easy to understand. I was just wondering if there is a risk of electric chock when disconnecting or reconnecting the wires on each pole ? We still have these intercoms in our building (12 apartments) since 1983.
Hi Claude: Any electrical voltage in the wires is low-voltage, less than 16 volts - so it won't harm you. Make sure that the bare ends of the wires do not touch each other when they are disconnected form the apartment station - Chris
@@northsideservicecompany3567 Thank you for your information, maybe that intercom is rather old. From Spain my country there're intercoms rather different, maybe they're more similar a telephone and in this link you have a intercom old with this style [ cloud10.todocoleccion.online/vintage/tc/2014/11/02/16/46004050.jpg ] even older than this intercom of your video, this intercom is about the 70s and it's a Golmar intercom, but in Spain there're intercoms similar to the american intercoms too, like this Fermax Fonoporta intercom [ upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/84/Fonoporta_fermax.png ] even older than this intercom of this video about the 70s too.
Great video except the 485 apartment speakers in my apartments do not have push button switches, they have the old timey leaves and contacts. I'm assuming if I clean the contacts with an emery board and contact cleaner I'll get the same result.
Hi Jeffery: Here's a link to our Video that show how to clean the Controls on your original 485 Apartment Stations: ruclips.net/video/_B7d-Z7MZXQ/видео.html Chris
Hi axeonvonshadow: There is no provision to turn off the Call Tone - unit by unit - for the 478 System using N485 Remote Stations. I can think of a way to do this, however - since your units Station is part of a larger System (the entire building) nothing should be done that will effect the units - Are you a renter or do you own the unit? - Chris
Thanks for this video (and your entire series). I have a 485 in my condo and have become moderately obsessed with upgrading the unit. Can any of the newer NuTone intercom speakers be retrofitted to work with this system - even if the main lobby unit is not upgraded?
Hi Ian: The N485 Apartment Stations are unique to the the NuTone 478 Apartment Intercom system and there are no other choices for Remote Stations - Chris
I have an ancient nutone model 2090. It was working great. Then had some work done on walls, and it had to be removed.when hooked back up had nothing. PLEASE HELP
Good job explaining the process
Hi Wayne:Thanks! - Chris
Thank you....explained very well....saved me a service call.

Very helpful thank you😀
Remove the top right wire. Got it. Thanks
Hi Drealenry: Make sure you don't disconnect more than the "Ring" Wire - otherwise you may disable station in other units in your building - Chris
It's a new and modern or an old intercom?
Hi cinefil500: The NuTone N485 Aprtament Stations (which are for the 478 System) were made between about 1982 through 2005, or so - Chris

Hi we have an exterior stainless steel unit, it is exposed to rain. Is there a shroud sold to help keep rain off it a bit better?
Hi Hughie: Is your stainless steel station part of an Apartment Intercom System? - Chris
yes it is a six button unit but sprayed when raining heavily.
how do i shut the sound off when unwelcome people repeatedly buzz it
