    I've always been a fan of the built in media editing tools that come with devices these days. I love to take a good photo so that I don't require extensive manipulation to it... I feel that it detracts from the capture perspective intended.

When I load my Sony a1 files from mem cards (I shoot raw slot 1 and jpeg on 2) onto a Mac mini using calibrated BenQ SW231 do i get the full raw file which I love to cull with? How do you find editing and organising photos/videos using MacOS compared to iOS? I have so far just been using iMovie on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and am on the fence between buying an iPad Pro 12.9 inch or a MacBook Pro / Mac Mini / Mac Studio. From watching your video, looks like the photos app in MacOS has more extensive editing options (plus of course keyboard and mouse interface should be easier). Thanks

    • @macmost

      It is a very subjective thing and hard to know what you personally will like better. I definitely like Mac better, but there are many over in the iPad camp now too. Maybe try them at a store when you get a chance.

    Terrific tutorial. Thank you! Can you do a video about app extensions? You seem to have a lot of them installed. And are the extensions just for photo editing, or do any extensions provide more UI functionality, such as adding album photo counts to the sidebar?

    • @macmost

      They are for editing. You usually get them when you add an app that also includes a Photos extension. Try searching the Mac App Store for some.

    Does the Mac Photos app access the same photos which are in the iOS Photos app on your iPhone and iPad? If so, then presumably any edits to photos and videos on your Mac would be replicated on your other Apple devices via iCloud? Thanks

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад +1

      If you are using iCloud Photos, then yes. Yes, changes would be seen on all. But note that editing in Photos is non-destructive. You can always revert to the original.

    • @TheKayakCrew
      @TheKayakCrew 2 года назад

      @@macmost thanks, that is useful to know. My logic is that if I can delete, edit or crop videos in the photos app itself then I could reduce the storage space taken up on iCloud to keep it under the 2TB limit.

    • @macmost
      @macmost  2 года назад +1

      @@TheKayakCrew Oh, no, that wouldn't do it. Since the original is always there, then it won't reduce the file size at all. You have more than 2TB of photos? Or are some videos? Maybe do what I do and don't store videos in iCloud Photos. I just put them in a folder (well-named) on an external archive drive. I don't have them available in iCloud, but I save a ton of space. I rarely look at my old videos, but I look at my old photos often.

    • @TheKayakCrew
      @TheKayakCrew 2 года назад

      @@macmost according to my settings, I currently have about 795GB of the 2TB storage used up. The bulk of my usage is ‘Photos’ which presumably includes videos. I did not realise that videos and photos still used your iCloud storage up even though you have deleted them or cut the size of a video down. That is a bit worrying because I am taking a lot of video these days. If the videos will still take up iCloud storage despite their deletion or cutting down in size then I will have to save the videos to hard disks and delete from the camera roll I guess (as you suggest)

      @@lemd49 Not sure what you mean by "tethered" but you can certainly use external editors in Photos (ruclips.net/video/OwFrTblplG4/видео.html) and you can add watermarks with markup (ruclips.net/video/IbN03q7sAFw/видео.html) or App Store extensions.

      hello, people who used Aperture migrated to one of the TOP 3 RAW converters, in alphabetical order:
      - Capture One Pro by Phase One
      - Lightroom by Adobe
      - PhotoLab ELITE by DxO

      Why don't you just continue using Aperture? It's still working, you know...

    You talk about a program that is great but you do not show what it looks like or the name where to open it cannot find it, so basic Gary you give such great presentation but leave out simple details that take seconds and leaves me looking for for it and having to go to other video just to find the program in question

      The whole video is about the Photos app. That's right in the title.

      Make sure you are viewing the photo (not at the list level). Make sure the photo is one you can edit (not something shared by someone else).

      @@macmost I right clicked and opened the file in photos. I wrestled with it for 10 minutes before giving up. I was able to do it in my phone in seconds. Also very easy in Paint. Thanks, I'd love to figure it out because these things frustrate me, especially when I see people in the comments saying that it works fine. I have a programming background, I build my own PCs, these things aren't new to me. But for some reason I have to go to RUclips to try to figure out how to crop a pic in the Photo app. It should not be this difficult.

      @@TonyStone3000 It shouldn't. Sounds like you imported the photo and them immediately tried to edit it. The normal path is to go to your library view (or album, or years/months), view the photo from your library, then click Edit.

      @@macmost I imported the pic, but I still need help to edit it. I right-click on the pic and select the "Edit with" option. The "Photos" app is greyed out and cannot be selected, which makes sense because I'm already in the Photos app. I go to "edit" on the top menu dropdown, but there isn't an option to edit the pic. I'd love to figure it out, but it should not be this difficult.

      @@TonyStone3000 "Edit With..." INSIDE the Photos app? That is for editing in an external editor. Instead double-click the picture to view it. Once you are viewing it, look for the Edit button.

    Photos app is a waste of space on my computer. Loved Aperture, but photos and the whole iCloud eco system is rubbish. Still like most of your videos though.
