Met Office - Learn About Weather You missed one type- ball lightning. I know that not everyone considers this phenomenon to be lightning, but, I believe it's important to discuss it because it occurs with thunderstorms, and it has been known to cause injury, as well as property damage. I have personally seen this phenomenon. One evening, during a particularly intense thunderstorm, I saw a bright blue ball about the size of a tennis ball form in the air about 50 feet away from my house during a severe thunderstorm with abundant lightning after a close lightning strike. It then proceeded to float towards my house and passed through an open window in my living room, where I was reading a book, stopping about 5 feet in front of my face. The lights started flickering as it buzzed around the room until it disappeared with the next lightning strike. Needless to say, I now close all my windows during thunderstorms.
Hi! I saw a bizarre phenomenon last night & can't find anything like it online. The electrical currents were visibly traveling along all the trees in my neighborhood. It looked like tinsel strands on all the trees. The thunder never followed it & it hadn't started raining yet. There were no lightning strikes & the trees did not burn. (And no, I didnt see Moses outside my window 😜). DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANY IDEAS? It didnt show up on my phone camera even with the lights out although it was obvious with the human eye.
A few years ago I was fortunate enough to witness a lightning storm in southern Alabama. An incredible amount of intracloud lightning, so high up the thunder was barely heard, that never seemed to stop. It was surreal; almost alien. Nothing but swirling masses of dark sky illuminated by lightning every second, flickering in and out. No rain. No thunder, as I said. Just lightning and swirling clouds.
Saw the most gorgeous intracloud/sheet lightning last night. The lightning was partially obscured by dark storm clouds, next to big swaths of grey, not-quite-night sky, so every few seconds the dark mass would suddenly light up in great detail with deep purple and blue tones. It not only illuminated the clouds beautifully, but also put the edges of the storm in this incredibly sharp contrast with the grey sky. It was so cool.
Same here, I can’t remember which of the canaries, maybe Gran Canaria, as a child myself and my dad saw from our window, lightning connect in the clouds above into a full circle in the sky, almost perfectly surrounding the circle of the hotel buildings from above, where in the centre there were a few pools. I was baffled and asked my dad how it happened and he was just as speechless as I was. Tuscany also has some gorgeous storms, usually later in summer
One that you could have mentioned is ball lightning it is very rare but still a form of lighting.. that can float slowly and go through windows and walls I heard the same with regular lighting as well can pass through things ...
My favorite type of lightning is the anvil crawler because it looks like an outstretched hand, and the way it crawls across the sky is absolutely facinating.
You forgot positive lightning. They lower positive charge to ground, tend to be more powerful, and commonly occur when "anvil crawlers" contact the ground.
Thanks Kuba, great suggestion. We will certainly be producing more videos around lightning and how it is formed in the future, where we can touch on positive lightning.
We had a 3 story tree house when I was younger. Huge thunderstorm. A friend legitimately got paranoid and wouldn't shut up about how dangerous it was to be in a tree. Not wanting to hear that, I finally got him to shut up. A bolt instantly hit 30 feet away directly in front of us. It split into 3 forks at eye level. Lightning looks blue from a distance. This was the most brilliant pink I have ever seen! Huge sparks everywhere! The most amazing thing I have ever seen. And then I was the first one to jump out of the tree house. I might have hit the ground before the thunder stopped! Glad I saw it. But I'm good now.
30 years later I got to see lightning strike the front of an airliner and exit the back going down the interstate. Clear skies except for a storm 15 miles or more away. I wish I had been closer.
I saw one in the UK, in the Yorkshire area, a few years back that brought me here, because I only vaguely remember how it looked and I want to see it again. If I remember correctly the entire sky was dark but with every strike it illuminated the entire sky so you could see the beautiful cloud formation, it was like a woven ripple effect, completely uniform and covered the as much sky as I could see. It must have been intracloud as only in any gaps in the ripples could you see the lightning strikes. Most of the time it just flashed a deep purple.
Theres also Transient Luminous events, aka mesospheric lightning. It cant hurt neither surface people or planes, because its high in the mesosphere. It can cause malfunctioning in vehicles (shuttles, satellites, etc.) above thunderstorms, but are harmless aside from that.
thanks for your information. russian children are taught that lighting has a return charge too also the worlds longest clear air lightning ( mega flash) covered 3 us states at a distance of 400 miles .
The 30 minute rule for staying inside after the last rumble finally became understood when a bolt from the blue struck under a mile away from me in a sunny sky. It was like a hairline crack in a blue stained glass window.
im watching this video bit i still confused over what kind of lightning i saw. it didn't produce much sounds. there's some thunder but the sound is super faint and it's pretty much silent. but it looks like either intracloud or cloud to cloud.
Thank you, I think we can or shall study the kinds of light and observe visible frequencies and relation between small animals and smaller frequencies, large animals and large frequencies..
Probably missed it because they don't have any video evidence. My grandmother always used to open the window to let out the ball lightning in case we were hit.
I saw an unusual type of lightning in the UK, at the end of August last year. The lightning came out from the top of the large thunder cloud, pointing towards the blue sky above. The bolts were short and didn't seem to connect with anything. I've never seen lightning bolts point upwards before. Which type of lightning would that have been?
Hi Walter - sorry for the slow reply. We put your question to one of our lightning experts and he got back to us with this answer:- "Basically, we can see any of these types of lightning anywhere in the world. However, some are more common than others. Intra-cloud lightning is more common than cloud-to-ground at mid and higher latitudes. Over the tropics, cloud-to-ground lightning and ground-to-cloud lightning become more frequent as occurs as often as intra-cloud lightning. I don’t think I have ever seen an Anvil Crawler in the UK - I believe you are more than likely to see them over continental Europe or the USA."
+Walter Batch Lightning is globally, it happens all around the world, no matter where you're at on earth lightning happens because storms travel all around the world just like seasons
Fork lightning does bad things. We were struck by fork lightning once when me and my sister were kids. It burned the walls, smoke everywhere. Due to visual impairment I can’t see or hear where the flashing and bangs are coming from. I don’t care if it’s sheet lightning or what lightning is bad.
I was standing on my porch a long time ago. There was a storm about 30 miles away. Blue sky where I was. Suddenly there was a crack and lightning hit the TV antenna on the farmhouse across the road from me.
Lightning is a life force energy, It flashes it doesn't arc!! big difference, It doesn't have a polarity as most suggest.. it is more like the center of a magnet..not the north or south poles but the real power of a magnet is at it's center. The "B" field. any density of the static field will attract similar energy within it's grasp.. it will assimilate then crash as a lightning bolt "FLASH". We would all be dead without it.. The sound of thunder comes from the compression left in the space it once occupied.
@@danielledewitt1 Not my house, but I was in Washington DC and it hit just five feet from me and I checked the ground where it hit it was ICE cold even though several rocks flew out of the ground.

Nothing "incredible" about them.

We have intracloud lightning right now. All bright red lightnings. Very pretty - Especially with the moon next to it.

Sheet lightning is my favorite. I like how the clouds glow.
I saw number 5 the other night on the Gold Coast. It looked absolutely spectacular. Kinda looked like it fizzled out and the end which was cool
I like the music, thanks for making this.
Number 3 and 5 is so cool!
I saw most of them the other night!,loads of cloud to cloud and intra cloud lightning and anvil crawlers.
