  • I am not a scientist, not a historian. I simply explain here how I personally do it. Everybody can feel free and do it differently. But as people have asked for my personal opinion: here it is. Mostly I don't use thumb rings, because i trained my thumb.

    Learning online about a thumb ring after deciding to buy a Korean bow.
    Step n#1 - Do a zillion of researches of why whynots, hows and do's
    Step n#2 - Watching this great video and deciding a gaffer tape self-made ring will do. I just need to mind the layering "away from the thumb" in order to not to stain the bowstring. Easy to replace every month, almost zero money cost.
    Case solved. Tens of bucks saved. Thanks a bunch.

    Again, golden advice. I was beginning to despair that I would not be able to use a thumb release, Armin, as it was hurting to draw 30#. Good to know that it gets better with gradual practice. Just like the ring finger of my drawing hand with three fingers. Over the years, I have built up a callus and never have pain shooting hundreds of shots with my 50# bow. I will take it slowly and should be good in a year or two to shoot such a weight with my thumb! Thanks.

    This is by far the most informative video I've seen on thumb drawing so far! So many archers with skills seem to forget how it was to be a beginner, and just present platitudes - you convey the dynamics and experience to a newbie like me, with your experience in an understandable and relatable way. Thanks! I discovered archery just this summer, and I've tried to try all things remotely luring me (_all using the compound bow I was borrowed_), quickly turning to finger release, and now enjoying the thumb draw simply is as the most suitable method for what I enjoy (but sooo painful - I loathe protection [unfortunately])!

    Hey Armin thank you for easin my mind. I started archery with a 40# korean bow a month ago, but after shooting for 30-40 min it starts to hurt. Now i know time will make my thumb callus thicker and stronger. Thank you for getting me into archery, its amazing!!!

    Hey I do that at home I got a box and filled it with styrofoam and taped it up and shoot at it without a full draw. Then slowly as you get warmed up you feel when you are ready and more confident and you start wanting to do full draws. Yes I’m developing my thumb to not use rings but is nice to have one thumb ring that fits perfect just in case you thumb needs a break.

      “Arm and Hammer” is a double-joke… That brand was created by a guy named Armand Hammer. For better advertising, he named his company “Arm and Hammer”.
      Armin’s name is the German equivalent of Armand’s...
      Armin - defender
      Armand - warrior
      Himer - home
      Hammer - inn
      Very cool that you picked up on the original joke!

    Wonderful video! Lots of great information about different styles. I did not know there were so many.
    I did not see one, but have you done a video about draw styles? Mongolian, Hungarian, etc.? It is hard to see how you curl your fingers around the string… Example: thumb over arrow, and 2 fingers under? Or 1 finger under?
    You know so much! I wish I could learn all the styles you know… Thank you, Armin! All your videos are so good!!

    Thanks to you, I can shoot thumb-draw, and also thanks to you, I use that "veterinarians' tape" you described in one of your vids. I made myself a nice thumb ring from the local California bay laurel, but I don't use it. More trouble than it's worth. I need to be able to feel the string more directly and have more control over the release to avoid inconsistencies. Also, if I need to shoot an elephant in an emergency, well, it would be tragic to be caught without my thumb ring.

    I've been getting a lot of pain trying out the thumb draw even with a leather thumb tab. Im shooting my 45lb western recurve (its a left handed one with a grip that conveniently works for right handed thumb draw) is the problem that i need a stronger protection or do I just need better release ? (I'm also getting a 30lb Mongolian style bow to learn with in the mail at some point but i wanted to mess around with my usual bow while I waited)

    Considering you have a lot of experience with various types of thumb rings, how should one measure themselves for one that isn't a Manchu thumb ring? I can never tell how tight I should make the calipers, or where exactly on the joint I need to be measuring.
    Because of this, I have not had a lot of success with the thumb rings that I have gotten through Vermil. One seemed to fit, but started to slide off after shooting a few arrows. The other was too small and I had to sand the inside to make it fit, but then after about an hour and a half of shooting at my club, my thumb began to get sore. The model of both of these rings was the Vermil Victory, and I wonder if maybe I should try the Vermil Classic (lipped).
    I'm also not sure, with the smaller thumb ring, if maybe it is too tight still, but the measurements I came to are not even available from Vermil usually, and I would have to modify each ring after buying a size down.
    EDIT: For reference as to my possibly incorrect thumb ring size, I have measured my ring that fits without slipping off as being 17.5x20.5mm.

    The problem I am having now with Korean thumb ring is that it will put a lot of pressure on the place where your thumb bend(the skin at joint part)...I shoot about 200-250 arrows with my 60lb most of the time, and I have to take a rest for a whole week to recover and that's really annoying. I am considering Manchu thumb ring now since I am using a Manchu bow. However, I doubt if Manchu thumb ring will hurt the joint of the thumb? I am considering buying this world.taobao.com/item/45238769182.htm?spm=a312a.7700714.0.0.hhzo5h#detail

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  7 лет назад +1

      the manchu ring will hurt too in the beginning until you get used to it. maybe overall you should start a low draw bow and not so many arrows in the beginning and raise amount of arrows and draw weight

    • @ArminHirmer
      @ArminHirmer  7 лет назад

This happens often when the tricep gets strained, bows are hard on your body. All-Calm is a good brand, unflavored, can find it at most health food stores. Just make sure you add boiling water, I take mine with different teas. You mention you don’t use the ring because you don’t need, since you’ve developed a callus. But what about the speed of release: I’ve seen claims that manchu rings > other rings (korean/mongolian/turkish/etc.) because they allow for a cleaner release that doesn’t require thumb curling. Do you have comments on that? (Perhaps a separate FAQ video? :) ) Thanks.

    • @ArminHirmer

    I am completely new to archery but have a question. These modern bows seem to come with around 50 pounds of draw weight max unless you get a custom build. However from the (limited) amount I've read on what the Mongols and others were using in war, the bows were well over 100 pounds. Obviously it takes a lot of practice to get up to a weight like that but why are modern bows made with a maximum draw of less than half of what were being used in history? (this is related to the thumb ring issue because he Mongols used them apparently and they were maybe a necessity with the power of the bows they were using?)

    • @youtubeadsarecancer785
      @youtubeadsarecancer785 Год назад +3

      just come cross this after 2 years lol
      1. because in the past, the bow is used to kill, now, modern archery only cares about accuracy, if you ever shoot a 80 pounds+ bow at sth, the arrow usually just breaks.
      2. as I said, modern archer only cares about score and accuracy, that's why their form isvery similar, and largely different than those you would see in the past( with body bending forward, hips out, over draw, because the modern man just wants consistency, they don't want power and mobility.
      3. if you ever draw a 40-pound bow, you will know drawing a 100-pound bow in competition will rip your arm off even if you are the strongest dude on earth. it is not good for long-term practice, there are some skeleton displays of the long bowmen in England, and their skeleton was simply distorted due to the long-term use of a heavy longbow
      4. in conclusion, if you put a modern Olympics archer in the battlefield 600 years ago, he would probably get killed. he cant shoot when running, he cant reload while running, his arrow will fall when he's riding on horse back, he is not get used to over draw so the enemy may survive. They just meant to be shooting machines that have high accuracy in the expense of mobility and power.
      and btw, in the world of asiatic archery, its pretty common people trying a 60+ pounds bow, which is more close to history (65-100pounds, 100+pounds are usually elite archer, not very common in the past, since 65 is already enough to kill a bear)

      I enjoy both mediteranian and thumb.
      I generally use mediteranian for target shooting, and thumb for less serious fun time with friends who are currious about the different aspects of the sport.

    To be honest Armin, I'm not a great fan of the thumb draw. I do like the Med draw. But to be frank, I'm probably stuck in my ways and it needs a younger archer, perhaps my son?- to lead me to enlightenment.

      Everyone has their preferences. I certainly didnt love thumbdraw when I started, and my thumb loved it even less.
      I decided to stick with it since I was interested in long draw, Gao Ying's inchworm method, and the various forms of Khatra, and after a month or two of grinding my thumb down and building the skin back up, I felt ready to begin practicing Thumbdraw more than mediteranian.
      When I teach archery, I usually introduce people to what thumbdraw is, and how to do it, but preface it with "this can be much harder to learn, and is not as common in the sport as mediteranian." and let everyone choose whether its worth the effort.
      Some of them did, and some of them didnt. It all depended on what they wanted from archery

      I recommend towel pull-ups instead.
      Just drape a couple towels over a pull-up bar, and hold onto them with a vertical grip as you do your pull-ups. You may have to ease yourself into it and work a progression first, but it's one of the best ways I know to actively target your thumbs.

      Usually thumb rings are tailor-made. If you buy from internet possibly wont really fit to your size. It meant to give you comfort not hurt you. So i guess size or shape problem. By the way traditionally theres no "I trained my thumb, i dont need ring" even 25# bow can really hurt your finger in long term. Ancient time archers put the thumb ring 7/24. Never remove from their fingers.

    Shoot thumb release, he said. It's fun, he said. Nah, you do not need a thumb ring, he said - but no one said I would have a thumb like a balloon after shooting two dozen arrows. ;) Be honest, Armin - how long did it take you to have such a nice horn skin on your thumb? Just kidding. Thank you very much for all those informative Videos. By the way, it's your "fault" that I've ordered a 22# Snake Bow from Arc Rolan to give this whole archery thing a try. Despite of the thumb it's great fun so far and till the thumb ring arrives, I'll concentrate on the mediteranian style. :)

With weak bow you can do what you think your trainer said then you will become trainer yourself then you student will misunderstand you and in a few generations we will have world championship with panties rubber bands in hands. Sport need feedback to avoid this.
