“Some organic is better than all organic” I like that and it’s what I was planning to do as I start my lawn renovation later this year. I like your channel, informative videos.
I beg to differ with you. I was a die hard Scotts user for years. I bought Milorganite once on a whim. I happened to use it side by side with Scotts. I will never go back to Scotts. Using it now for over 15 years and very happy with it.
I like your varied approach. Grabbed a compost fork last week. Wasn't crazy about the designs available. Mainly one type made under several brands. The selection is what color you want. It works great for processed compost, still need the four tine for new material.
Thanks for the video... I really like a lot of your reviews... I use Milorganite and just purchased a 50 pound bag for $19 at my local Ace Landscapers Supply store, better price than other stores. I am happy with the results and the price difference is high... the one you are recommending is $65 on Amazon... too much... Thanks for the info!
They are really about the same price because this product covers 11k sqft and Milo only 2.5k sqft, making Milo a bit more expensive. I use a hybrid fertilizer approach as well...Milo because it's easier to find, some cheap synthetic fertilizer in granulated form and spoon feed with liquid Fert plus iron and micros called Feature...works well.
I wish you would mention that switching from years of synthetic to organic takes patience. The whole idea behind an organics program is to feed the soil and the soil will provide everything the grass needs. Any homeowner that's been spreading Scott's weed & feed for years, their soil is void of any real nutrients. One application of Innova, Milorganite or any other quality organic fertilizer is not enough to reverse years of damage done by synthetics. I live in Texas and have been using organic fertilizer on my Zoysia since day 1 and I've been very happy with the results. The only part of the organics program that hard core organic proponents won't readily admit is there's really no effective way to control annual weeds. My backyard has been increasingly overrun with nutsedge, poa annua and other weeds. Years of corn gluten meal as a pre-emergent has NEVER provided any protection. After 20 years of all organic, I have decided to finally use sedgehammer for the nutsedge and other synthetics for the other weeds, while still using organic fertilizers. I'm hoping to find the proper balance that will yield the best results. For anyone in the southern US trying to decide which type of grass to install, Zoysia is the ONLY option IMHO. There are several types available, but it is without doubt the most drought and disease tolerant grass available. I personally prefer El Toro, which is what I installed 20 yrs ago, but there are others. It has a medium blade width and is super dense when it's healthy. I can't tell you how many compliments I've received over the years, especially being surrounded by so many unhealthy Bermuda lawns. Hope this helps anyone considering the switch to organics.
Best way to prevent weeds is to hand pull and don't core aerate and eventually your grass will smother everything but the occasional dandelion and poa triv. Core aeration provides opportunity for seeds already in the soil to emerge, and gives seeds in the air a place to sprout.
Great insight. Have you tried humic acid or adding any liquid micronutrient applications. Would love to know specifically your program and products. Thank you
I appreciate the insight also. I’m a beginner with lawn care living in SE Texas. I have St. Augustine. I wish it was Zoysia. Like walking on feathers. *sigh*

Organic fertilizers don't work instantly like chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers feed plants, but destroy dirt. Plants and grass take in the strong chemicals quickly, but the chemicals burn out the microbes in the soil. You'll have a lack of worms. You need to apply chemicals regularly to feed plants. Too much chemical fertilizer in one feeding will burn out plant life too. Organic fertilizers feed the soil. Microbes develop in the soil and plants feed on those microbes. Each application of organic fertilizer builds soil strength and after using for a period of time, less applications and quantities are needed. The reason the first organic fertilizer didn't work was it didn't have enough time for microbes to develop to the point where the grass could feed on it. The grass was seeing the effects of the first organic fertilizer after the 2nd & 3rd feedings. By the time you got to the product you like, your grass was benefiting from the earlier feedings. You can apply organic fertilizer year round because unlike grass, microbes continue to grow in cooler weather, just slower. When using chemical fertilizer and organic on the same lawn, the chemical kills the organic microbes. If you want to go organic, you've got to be patient.

Bummer! I just bought 2 bags of Milorganite last week for the same reason. I wanted a fertilizer that was safe for my dog. Plus I didn't want a fertilizer that accelerates the growth so I have to mow it twice as often. Oh well, I'm going to still use it an see what happens.

Not yet, looks interesting and The Grassf actor is the best! so I would think its good stuff
I have to say I'm "shocked" you didn't have any results with Milorganite. I've used it for years. The Anderson products are very good.
I am too and went to huge trouble to get it during a shortage. I was very sad when it didn't perform.
I had really good results with it the first year and then for some reason not so much the second year.
Really good good video. Thanks for the good info.. very helpful after watching.
SC, this is just soybean meal. You can get a 50 pound bag at any feed store for $20.00.
I'm not sure it's the same, supposedly has trace elements, amino acids as well but who knows but it worked nice for me.
@@SilverCymbal I'm pretty sure that plain old soybean meal has all essential amino acids, vitamins, and lots of other good stuff. You should get a bag of generic soybean meal at a feed store and try that -- would make a great video.
@@lambert1702 I think your correct. The price of Andersons would work for a homeowner but not for someone doing it for a living.
Yup. Another channel sponsored by Anderson’s
I dont think u used enough milorganite . Throw it down liberally .
No before and afters
"The Rolls Royce of spreaders", did you have to say that. Now my wife constantly teases me with that. She was standing in my MAN CAVE admiring your landscaping when you said that. Now she just thinks all men who watch this kind of stuff are crazy. "Sigh"
That is hilarious! A lot of wives think we are crazy so you aren't alone!
Skip milo whow
My manure is good stuff
I liked the video but the suggestion that synthetic fertilizers are somehow dangerous is exaggerated.
Nitro phos is good
Bummer! I just bought 2 bags of Milorganite last week for the same reason. I wanted a fertilizer that was safe for my dog. Plus I didn't want a fertilizer that accelerates the growth so I have to mow it twice as often. Oh well, I'm going to still use it an see what happens.
You may have better luck than I did, and it's definitely safe for your dog. Next time around you can always try innova or one of the other products if you dont have good luck.
Milorganite has worked for a lot of people if you put the correct amount down. You will probably enjoy using Milorganite. The biggest issue with Milorganite is trying to find it since there is a shortage since so many people have had good results.
Works great.
60$ for 40lb... so expensive. You can also find much cheaper simlilar products 1. at walmart same analyst 7-1-2 6x 5lb =30lb for 16.95$ (
Down To Earth Organic Soybean Meal), 2.Purely Organic Products LLC. Lawn Food 5,000 sq ft 10-0-2 22$ i see at walmart hd, lowes (soybean meal but diffrent analyst) ask at your local garden stores for more
3-4 pounds of milo per 1000 will indeed do not much at all.
@4:50 Really doesn't want you to use Milorganite....grabs knife while talking about it... :)

A lot of money for 40 pounds, There are better ways for organic lawn feeding!! Do not need ANY chemical at all !!
Very overpriced stuff, buy the Scott natural food for $23, also from bone meal and feather meal, no waste. You are crazy if you think I'll spend almost $80 in a bag of fertilizer
Overpriced
