This is how I’ve been gripping my clubs for years! Playing baseball my whole life it’s developed the bad muscle memory so my club face would always be open. I figured it out on the range one day and haven’t gone back to the neutral grip. I’m glad your teaching this to people, I’m sure they’re are so many other people that could benefit from this without learning the hard way going through 1000s of range balls. It’s nice to see a golf instructor talking on this, I thought I was crazy!
People will not believe this but 1 week working with this had me finally breaking 90. I am 72 and have been playing for about 5 years. My best score before this was 95. I am a 25 handicap. I was driving around 200 now 220-260. I told my buddies there is no looking back to 18 bad shots a round anymore. Thanks Shawn you make it understandable sense!!!
Hey Shawn, i wanted to let you know, ive been playing golf for about 3 months and found your videos about 2 months ago (at that time id loose a full box of balls every round) . I played eagle glen (i guess its a renowned course in my parts) with some golfing buddies for the 1st time a couple weeks ago. I was 3 over par on the front 9 before i fell apart, at 1st they told me my grip was wrong and swing was odd. my buddies couldnt believe how well i played tho and asked if i was getting pro lessons.... all credit goes to you sir. As a trades man your loading and releasing through the target in a body strong method is pure gold. I only wish i could take lessons in person!!! Keep it going, im an open canvass and when i reach scratch golfer status (currently shooting around 105 and falling plus only loosing a few balls now) your online lessons will be how i achieved this. recommendations to all, pure gold!!! Cheers
Thanks Shawn for focusing on the strong grip . After starting up this spring with my old grip - I developed inflammation in both elbows - since finding your videos I have changed to the strong grip with forward press and Nicklaus head tilt and my elbow pain has gone away. Will go look at your premium channel to see what additional insights I can gain. Thanks again - keep it coming

Hey Shawn. Got out of golf for about a year and a half. Getting back into it now that life settled down a bit. Going through your videos to get caught up. That bowed wrist is cool to see but for most of us it wont last long. I played in North Carolina for years and the public golf course fairways are lean and hard. Carolina clay can get heavy in the sun. Trying to pull a bowed wrist through that will just end up with a visit to the doctor's office. Those pro's play on pristine courses with lush fairways. I have played on those as well. So a lot less risk to overloading a writs. Your point on moving the ball back in the stance at 9:29 is spot on. A strong grip does have a setback of a duck hook. All grips have a weakness. I have found that setting the ball back in my stance helps the timing of rotation through the shot. Its when I move the ball forward in a downward iron shot to get a few extra yards that gets me in trouble to the left. By the time I get to the ball I start to close up on the forward rotation and left hook it goes. Keep it back in my stance with a nice forward press and I am firing at pins. Thanks for all your vids. G-
yessir! See the “ball position bible shawn clement” and “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” videos to confirm what you just mentioned!
Great video and it all makes sense. As a 5'3" 64 yr old male watching Mu swing with easy is all envy. You should video the 3 of you playing 3 holes so we can see the instruction in action.
Is saw a video of a professional golfer last week and at impact the Back of his left hand was facing the camera. Viewed from the front. I thought to myself if I was in that position I would be hitting golf balls in the parking lot. This video confirms what's really going on thanks.
Honestly when I first started golfing a few months ago this is what my body naturally wanted to do since it felt strongest. Then I watches all the classic ways other coaches taught and I felt like I was wrong. Then I always found my way naturally reverting to the way I originally wanted to swing. Thank you for showing me it’s okay to listen to my natural biomechanics and that I can play that way if I want to.
Great stuff! Like your comment, that you wouldnt change a grip. I took a lesson and the teacher wanted to weaken my grip, even tho I never have issues hooking to right.
Amazing how ignorant the industry can still be when opinion based on perception is used. We use science, anatomy, neurology and applied years of experience to that and what you get is far more wisdom! 👍😀
I'm a new golfer , almost 2 years playing with no lessons and I found that the Strong grip is the only grip I can use where I'm the most consistent. I don't know what's wrong with my golf swing where the neutral grip is just inconsistent and I struggle to compress or get the ball in the air. But I will turn around and take stronger grip and like magic my swing is fixed. One of these days I will figure it out.
The secret is to cup the wrist at address or as early as your takeaway, this creates a forward shaft lean that stays static from start to finish. Swinging is static naturally feeling like one motion… and shots don’t fade or draw… dead straight.
I've tried grip changes in the past, but they felt so unnatural that I quickly went back to my natural grip. HOWEVER, this wrist position both feels great (non-compromised) and fits perfectly with my swing concept (a hammer, sword or bat). It super-charged my release! Go figure.
I've been watching a few of these and strengthened my grip playing hockey. Immediately noticed more power on my wrist shot. Question: Do you use this same strong grip on all shots?
Hi Shawn, this is a really powerful grip for me. I noticed that before this grip I was very upright and with this grip my swing is a little flatter. Is this flatter plane a by product of this grip or am I doing something wrong. My ball speed has jumped using this grip and I think more of swinging through the ball rather than at the ball with this grip. The ball flight is a draw with a penetrating ball flight. This grip definitely makes me think of swinging through the ball rather than at it. Thank you Shawn for this great wisdom in golf.
@@golflessons Thanks Shawn for the reply. I just need to bring this to the course now. I went from 147 mph ball speed to 155 mph ball speed with this new grip. This was with beat up range balls and my PRGR monitor. I know there is more there I just have to get use to this and trust it. If I swing through it, it goes right down the target line. If I swing at the ball it goes left, so It actually forces me to swing through it for a great result.
its a super video.. i will try this.. like the all analogies, makes sense.. but there is still that question back in my mind.. why does so many pros use more natural grip.. must be a reason right.. when did a pro choose a harder way when there is easier way, you know what im saying?
You can do one or the other, or a bit of both, it does mot matter. What matters is when you deliver your action in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball gets compressed in that direction. See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement golf wrx” video as well as “through the ball vs at the ball shawn clement” and “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement”.
Any advice for drills or mindsets to have with a driver? I have a strong grip but really struggle with low ball flight and pulls/hooks. My distance is all over the place. I’m not very consistent with the driver.
Stay with the focus of delivering the tip of tee in the direction you want to start the ball at the height you want the ball to fly on. See “driver speed and smash shawn clement” for the rest
I hit my irons straight an good but I just can't get rid of my fade with driver!... I tried about everything ...played baseball my while life....u think I should do more of natural grip an just set up the club face where it will be squared up at contact?
You have no idea how closed you need to have that face; it is way more than you think! This is what keeps golfers going back for instruction for bowed wrists! Just insane! See “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement golf wrx”
If you stop your video at 8:41 and look carefully, there would be no way you could hit a golf ball that was laying on the ground. However, I don't mean to criticize you Shawn, but you might want to consider experimenting with the Medicus hinged five iron and you'll see the way the club was designed. The shaft actually droops. We don't swing the golf club forward in the direction of the target, we swing the golf club down in the direction of the ground and with the twisting motion of the upper body back and then completely through, we get the desired motion. If the golf ball was indeed at the height of your upper thighs, then I would agree with your technique 100%. What I'm saying is we want to keep the leading edge of the club parallel to our spine and our hands in front of our body as much as we can. We don't want to swing around our body or across it. Once we get the golf club to the top, wrists fully cocked, right hand holding a try and shaft parallel to the target line, the direction we swing is down combined with the twisting motion of our upper body and we try to keep the leading edge of the golf club parallel with our spine. From the top if we think of pointing the butt end of the grip toward the outside of our right pelvis and just keep going to a full follow through, maximum power and direction will be achieved. Of course, there are a bunch of ways to swing the club but I'd love to see you try this and comment on this method. There is a Japanese golf trainer who also teaches this and if you find and watch his video, you just might love it. I do enjoy your videos and again this isn't any kind of criticism.
Just one issue. Hogan, Trevino, DJ, Rahm all have lead wrist flexion at impact, all supreme ball strikers who prefer a fade (in Hogans case it was his 'secret'). A Rahm slow-mo looks to me like he does it to keep hands ahead at impact.
We are talking skilled players from a young age; we covered that. I am talking about the average golfer, with only a couple times per week practice including their golf games swinging like Zack Johnson, Paul Azinger, Fred Couples, Webb Simpson, and over 70 more on the PGA tour with strong grips and non bowed wrists at impact.
And he is very extreme in this technique; his is predicated on how much support the right hand provides throughout the swing. If he were to swing left hand on club only, it would not be very productive…
Hi Shawn I’ve tried your teaching methods before and was even a member of yours previously. My problem is I always over hook the ball with this method. I really noticed today that you and Mu take the club back very upright, almost swinging around your neck I’d say. I take it back much deeper and laid off than you guys. Could this be the cause of my over hooking? Path too far in to out ? Any help for this lost former member much appreciated. Phil
Exactly Phil! See the “Fade Fine Tuning”, “backswing levitation”, “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with savy” then “how to match backswing to ball direction” videos and deliver some nice fades to balance things out! Savannah and I took a couple of students out on a very tight golf course today and we had her doing some Bubba fades with the driver and she was hitting a ton of fairways! @@golflessons WOW WOW WOW…..thank you so much Shawn, after 2 range sessions I’ve got a great feel for this new swing. The first session started well but ended with the dreaded hook creeping back in. After watching a few of your vids and trying to mimic your swing tempo I am now flushing my 4 iron which I usually leave at home! What a freedom I feel and a wonderful pause at the top for the first time ever. Previously felt super rushed ( I think in an attempt to hurry and square an open club face ) can’t thank you enough sir!!!! Phil
I definitely want to go back to the range and practice this grip. I was getting more and more neutral in my grip and hitting nice straight shots but I gave up so much distance in the process. It has been a very frustrating 3years. I still remember your video on throwing a kumquat.
I've been playing for almost 2 years and using the strong grip is the only thing that works for my swing. One of these days I have to video myself to figure out why.
@@Herc11355 HI Herc. If it works don't try to understand!! Haha 😉 I just spent 2+ hours at the range and really noticed a difference with the stronger grip. It was especially evident with my fairways and driver. Way tighter spread.
Hitting a hammer always felt like how i should hit a golf ball but literally everyone tells you 'your grip is too strong!' While a weak bowed position feels so contrived and 'weak'.
I don't think this is right - a golf club is not a hammer. The hammer's center of mass is down the center of the tool allowing it to hammer in nails. This means the forearm will naturally align down the center of the hammer. A golf club has its center of mass offset, so when swung it needs to be held lightly and the club naturally closes. You can grip a golf club like a hammer but it is counter productive and doesn't allow the club to swing naturally.
Hi Dave! I know what you mean! we are not literally holding exactly like a hammer, that would be too strong and for the reason you mention yes; also due to the fact that we are collecting the ball from where it lies and releasing it in the direction we want it to start it’s flight. THE VAST MAJORITY of golfers do jot have a strong enough grip to where they need to bow the wrist and release earlier to get the club to square up and hit too high and short and get exposed to the wind. Ryan Fox, is the best example of a hammer out on tour and he is accompanied by at least 100 more tour players out of the top 125. the recipe is in the “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement” video as well as the “hit a honkin’ draw to hit straight shawn clement” when I show how to “Goldilocks” the amount of grip and club face closure to execute a properly compressed shot.
Because it is the soup of the day on tour; started with Hank Haney and then reinforced by Dustin Johnson who did that his whole life and any kid who was taught the neutral grip had to do this to get by; some were able to get through, and many have had wrist injuries and surgeries such as Brooks and now Bryson and dozens more…the game of golf lost too many and is loosing too many because of this stupidity…
So many RUclips golf instructors are advocating a bowed wrist that I was starting to take the bait. But I have a nagging concern that the bow is a manipulation that wouldn’t occur naturally in a swing. I’ve noticed that most of the pros that bow the left wrist do not do it when they take their practice swings. Their practice swing seems much more natural.
Exactly; the bow in the left wrist is a compensation to a grip-club relationship that is too weak to begin with. Not something the average golfer will have ease in doing.
Why oh why did I get sucked into the bowed wrist vortex? 6 months ago you had me hammering my irons. Oh well back on track and many thanks for the help!
Stay right here!! We have done way more than our homework with all sports with human movement patterns. We are amazing machines and once the tool has been married properly to it AND THE RIGHT TASK IS APPLIED, MAGIC HAPPENS!!
I'm gonna have to watch this again but for the driver would this mean my top hand would be leading through contact with the outside edge of hand instead of back of hand? Or am I "not getting it"?
Interesting discussion on the grip. Notice on the tennis, baseball and hammer grips the lead hand thumb is not place ON the shaft. Why do we place the thumb on the shaft for golf?
To marry the trail hand better to it and fill the trail hand properly; you can play with the thumb on the side baseball style though, it is actually quite good!
You will see a video called “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” and when you combine that with this one, the anatomical position of the elbow would be to allow you to get through the ball like the hammer visual.
Shawn, there are an incredible number of U tube golf instructors advocating the bowed lead wrist method. It’s seems to be more than just a fad because of DJ. The claims are that with rotation you generate more power. So other than injury risk, what are the pros and cons to bowed risks? I seem to lack power and thought this might help me.
It is the ADDED MANIPULATION that they advocate where it just saps all the focus off the shot and places your mind on a body part manipulation. AND WHY WOULD THEY ADVOCATE THIS IN THE FIRST PLACE?? Because the face is open?? WELL THERE YOU GO, just close the face to start and then you don’t have to make any anatomical gymnastics and mental gymnastics to compensate, JUST SWING TO THE TARGET AND FORGET ABOUT IT!!
Yea I had a huge conflict with the bowed wrist just the other day. I’ve heard of it and tried it and yea sometimes it works but doesn’t feel natural. And then I noticed that they also say to bow the wrist but not to have any pronation/supination which seems counterintuitive when trying to have a shallow swing. Cause as I bring it to the top, with the natural force of the back swing, idk how to not allow any pronation or supination without being in a very awkward and weak position.
Same thing happened to me. I tried to bow my wrist but it just didn't feel natural. I worked through it but then other parts of my swing degraded because I was just focused on my darn wrist!
What needs to be consistent is your focus to deliver your whipping action THROUGH TO THE DIRECTION YOU WANT TO START THE BALL; the strong grip, or the neutral grip with closed face (same thing) ALLOWS YOU TO STAY THERE. See “why your swing is underpowered shawn clement” and “the most important video on grip ever shawn clement” and then we can talk some more!
Love Moe Norman, Todd Graves...but love you more! I'm almost 72 and you have given me back my game. Would love to know your thoughts on the 10 finger grip. Inter-locking or over-lapping doesn't work for me. I've broken 90 twice. I would love to break 85 or 80. Dreaming?
Ten finger is a very valid grip ESPECIALLY if that is the one that feels best to you! Make sure you see the “important grip update” video on our premium channel at Wisdom In Golf Premium.com which will really explain the alignment of the arm and body anatomy to COMPRESS through to the target!
Shawn, this tip is spot on !!!! I studied and played the game of golf for many years (5 handicap) after playing competitive baseball, One thing I could never understand was, when I hit a baseball I was in the position that you describe in the video, but when I hit a golf ball in the same position the ball went way right. Well, now I know why. I tried your tip the other day and had only one swing thought, lead with my hands like baseball and killed it.!!! This is the holy grail of tips for me. I feel like I’m playing baseball again. Hitting the golf ball with my watch face facing out in front of me instead of down the target line which seems to be what everyone else is advocating has put me in a powerful familiar baseball hitting position.!! Thx Shawn for all your help
It is difficult for me to understand how one gets the pressure down into the left foot when the head hangs so far back and must stay in the same position at impact. Would like more golf swing details in slow motion, please. Thank you very much.
See “feel the braced tilt shawn clement” an oldie but goodie! See also “hammer through shawn clement” and “one leg drill shawn clement” so many videos to help you with that question!
Little confused here Shaun. so you saying leave the club face closed at address swing out to the right and it will straighten itself? I’m sure I see in one of your other videos that you close the face then have it straight by tilting and strong grip? Been trying your way now for about 4 months it’s going well but a long way to go thanks
I am aligned properly, but with this strong grip and side tilt at address, I am pushing the ball way to the right with my driver. Why is club face open when i swing with this strong grip?
1-your centre is moving forward and you lose the anchor to your swing-see “anchor your swing shawn clement” which is what you see Tony Finau and Cameron Young do 2-You are not aware of the path of the swing or can’t stay with your shot’s direction; on our premium channel, see “bolted and centred” which is the deluxe version of anchor your swing, then see “blur of club” then “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” and then see”important driver nugget” and “diagonal stance series driver draw” where you will see things nobody in the industry talks about but then hey, duh, this is why Ben Hogan and Moe Norman had so much success with the driver!! 3-Your not allowing the weight of the club to fully release you; happens all the time with the longer clubs where you get “careful” which is the #1 enemy of the driver swing. So see “lead hand release in the backswing” and “lead hand release” same for trail hand and then see “release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” and then “turbo charge lead hand release” and trail hand release. One or all of these 3 will get you your AH Ha moment!
Hi, I am and have a 12 HCP for last 15yrs. Been improving consistently with my swing working on release and body. This grip concept has unleashed a lot of potential in my swing. Allows to put full athleticism in your swing. Just maxed 95mph swing speed with a 7 iron (are driving range). Drive is consistently 110-115mph when I have always been 105-108 max. It clicks with all the sound bio mechanical principles of golf swing.👏👏👏
@@jerryinsc Thanks for your reply . It’s a different approach to setting up the face of the club at address that Shawn puts across . Very interesting . I’ve always used the hammer and nail unhinging of the wrists and tried to square up the face with left forearm rotation. It’s very hit and miss and very reliant on timing . I can see straight away ( in the lounge room ) that having a closed club face at address produces a square face at impact , when unhinging, and no need for any other movement in the wrists or forearms. Seems to simplify the impact . I’m keen to try it next time at the range.
@@jerryinsc Just back from the park with a 9 iron and a dozen balls . Tried out the closed club face with the hammer and nail unhinging of the wrists . Initially pulled a lot of shots but with that natural athletic release of the wrists noticed an immediate increase of power . After steepening my shoulder plane I managed to start hitting straighter shots . I’ve got strong hands and forearms from the work I do but I’ve never been able to use them to advantage because of the timing required to get the club face square at impact . After about 1/2 hour with the club face closed at address I was starting to see the benefits. I did not need to hold back - I could let rip without any concern about squaring up the club face . It just happened. The low pulled shot was the bad shot but at least it was consistent and I feel it can be managed . My 9 iron went from about 100 m to about 120 m . I’m keen to keep with this new set up and try with other irons . You were right when you stated that this approach takes a lot of the timing issues out of the swing .
Use a baseball bat, which is much heavier, and you will feel that snap right away; then it is just awareness and letting the club release under its own weight when you deliver your action into your flight plan. We have an extensive “release” series of videos on our premium channel to get you to feel this properly with the golf club; see “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning,” “snap release polish” and “important release update”
So, @ around 10:05 you comment that "because my face is closed enough"...so your club face is closed at address AND you have a strong grip? OR, club face is closed at address with a neutral grip and because of body rotation you square the club face by rotating hands into a strong grip? Never mind, I re-watched the video. Think I've got it. I'll try this tomorrow...39° where I'm at. I hope it adds 30 yards!😊
I am saying that you don’t need to resort to bowing your wrists in the swing to get the club to square up (which is very dangerous anatomically for injury) you just need to have a grip-club relationship that is closed enough to begin with.
Shawn, your instruction has greatly improved my golf game. My iron play has become a real strength for me. My driver on the other hand just has no distance what so ever.
Want looking through my old training aids and found the Momentus speed whoosh which has a neutral grip training handle on it. This thing works great because you take the neutral grip then place the hands in a forward press to create the strong grip and focus on throwing the big white ball at the target.
You are lining up the direction of the momentum, not the face. The face will be different at impact because the hands are leading the club through the ball.
Thank you for the reply. But just so I understand this correctly. The momentum of the shot is going to the right. I line up to the right? Please excuse my ignorance.
I’ve just had an aha moment. I have tried setting up like this before and the ball has been going out to the left (I am a lefty), makes perfect sense to close the club face. I am going to practice this tomorrow. Loving the content👍
Right on Steve! If this does not quite do it, make sure you see “fencing for power shawn clement” and “all about the release shawn clement” so you are not steering the shot and truly letting it go!
I've had a sore left arm for a couple of weeks towards the wrist. Now I realise why. I've been trying really hard to flatten that wrist through my swing. And I wonder why I top out at 230 metres (approximately 250 yards) with my driver and can't do better. Can't wait to try this out on the range.
We have a few on this subject Luke; see “loaded arms shawn clement” (oldie but goodie) and “cupped vs bowed wrists shawn clement” just to name a few in our 1000 video arsenal! 😝😀
Great video, One point of clarity though. You showed Sav with a very strong grip but what appears to be a square face and she hits a great distance and you also propose a neutral grip with a closed face. Is this purely preference or is there advantages of one over the other.
Shawn, this is just crazy good stuff! Set it and forget it! This makes so many things so much easier. In addition to the physical side of it, it also frees up the mental part of things also. Nothing like centre of face contact. Been following for many years and glad to see your message has never changed. Don't know why the industry doesn't follow suit...handicaps would finally start coming down and people would have so much more fun. Your explanations and delivery are top notch...keep it up!
I have always had a strong grip. I really think people that have a strong grip do not have as much of a problem flipping at the ball with an early release. Common sense tells me, If I am going to smack something with power, I would Karate chop it rather than hit with the back of my hand. Also find it easier to keep the trailing elbow in coming down with a strong grip. Watch Freddy Couples, his first move from the top coming down is laying the club off just a bit and his right elbow going for his side.
Your neutral grip swing speed was 10 slower than your strong grip. Wouldn’t that be the distance gain? Or did your strong grip cause you to gain club speed?
I watched this video the other day, tried it at the range yesterday and couldn’t believe the added power. Going a little bit left at times but a very consistent strike.
Stay with the direction you want to start that ball on; use a close intermediate point like in the “alignment reload”, “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” videos in our premium channel.
I get that certain wrist angles are less powerful. But one of the wrist angles uv said not to do is the way Dustin Johnson does it and we know the power he has!?!?!
You're always going to find at least one tour player who does something completely unconventional, actually most tour players will have one small aspect of their swing that is not recommended to learn the game. You wouldn't recommend Matthew Wolf's swing to anyone, but if they have the fundamentals and then stumble across it and reach professional levels, well they won't be asking for youtube advice anyway. Also he did acknowledge that Dustin and Koepka as well have this position, as well as noting Brooks' wrist injuries.
I really like alot how you are not just using the hammer analogy. but the way you explain the baseball and tennis analogy as well for the golf swing. it helps me understand that not everything is about bowing the wrists for a square club face. you can do that in golf naturally but in other sports it's not the case. and now i understand that bowing too much is not natural for the wrist of your hands. it could lead to injury's? i don't know. that is why it's natural to have your wrist not bowed if you use your lower body first and the arms following along the lower body laging behind leaving much room for position to hit and getting the right elbow under your left then you are good. i should definitely give this a try next time I'm on the range thank you Shawn clement 👍
@@golflessons i agree. it's very painful to see alot of people with wrist injury's using a bowed wrist that is why we need to keep it as natural as possible and prevent it from happening
I'm gonna do this behind the back of my instructor. I lose about 40% of my power bowing the wrist and I tend to send the club inwards causing chunking. Gonna practice this.
@@golflessons I tried this and it helped on short irons, but on long irons, it was a disaster. So I went to see my instructor and he gave me a drill to put a tee down about 4 to 5 inches behind the ball flat on the ground perpendicular to the target. You can also use a towel and put it further back. You must now hit the ball without hitting the tee or towel. He also got me to straighten out the left leg more. These two things corrected my club path. For some reason, I'm wired to feel the opposite of what my club path is doing. So if I think I'm going in to out, I'm actually doing the opposite. I have no idea why. With the tee drill, my brain automatically adjusts to not hit the tee and my club path is fixed. I don't need as strong a grip anymore. In fact, my ball goes left now with too strong a grip. I still take a strong grip, but I no longer need to close the face. I can now fade or draw the ball a little by just changing the grip. Regardless of the final solution, your video helped me get to the root of the problem. When I saw that closing the face didn't work, it had to be something else and proceeded to get professional help. I'm now working on getting my club path sorted out for better control for a proper fade and draw that starts out in the proper direction. My tip is make sure your club path is correct first. My club path was only slightly off, but I was doing too many adjustments. It's crazy how much your brain will try to self correct. This is a huge day for me. This issue had been bothering me for years.

The grip needs to be where your body wants to put the hands on the club. Different anatomy = different grips. If you force your body into the wrong grip for you, makes it unathletic and difficult to square the face at impact.
Hey John! A very important ingredient missing in your answer is the purpose of the grip: Are you getting ready to hit the ball or are you getting ready to collect the ball from where it lies and deliver it into a specific flight plan into the end target?
I get your idea. The semantics of golf instruction can be misleading. I am a decent player (1-2 hcp). Played for a long time with a strong-ish grip. Played well but always fought the snipe left and always thought about it (very daunting with trouble left of target). I found that my arms hang in a way that wants a more neutral grip (less strong). Still move the ball predominantly left but more able to start it right (instead of left to left). Also opened up the option of working it left to right. With more confidence in a square face through the ball, my swing has become much more athletic (able to let it go through the ball, less steering).
well, it is the situation for hockey, baseball, tennis, ping pong, throwing, hammer throwing, slashing a sword through a bamboo and all other disciplines and sports. You think golf is different? Open your mind!
You bet! The grip is what ALLOWS YOU TO DELIVER THROUGH THE BALL instead of being forced to release at the ball which is no way to play. See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” videos and then see “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement”
I can't figure out, when I line the ball up near the toe of the club, the ball goes straight when I hit it... When I line it up in the middle of the club, I slice it!... Weird ! Any reason why?

This is how I’ve been gripping my clubs for years! Playing baseball my whole life it’s developed the bad muscle memory so my club face would always be open. I figured it out on the range one day and haven’t gone back to the neutral grip. I’m glad your teaching this to people, I’m sure they’re are so many other people that could benefit from this without learning the hard way going through 1000s of range balls. It’s nice to see a golf instructor talking on this, I thought I was crazy!
Right on Jacob! 👍😀👌
Mu's swing has really progressed nicely. His tempo is smooth and his swing appears so effortless.
Way to go Mu! Great instruction Shawn!
You go Vance!! You da man!!😀👍💪👌

Well done Rudyard 👍🏻😎

Oh, it is so good to KNOW! 😀👍💪👌
I’ve been listening to Mike Bender and I absolutely agree with you I caused a injury learning to try to bow the wrist
Hi Jos! Yes, very difficult when the anatomy of the arm is compromised and then placed in a high speed and high strain situation!
Yeah Man! You are Pinocchio without the strings! Don’t let golf instructors scare you into thinking you are “defective” and need new wires to install!
Incredible stuff Mu's distances. Great video
Mu is the real deal beast; to see up close how the ball shoots off the club into the stratosphere is an absolute dream!
This is good advice not only for ease of playing but longevity
Love the deep voices for a minute after the intro..lol
Haha, thank you man! 👍👍😀
Does the degree of closure of the face at address vary according to which club you use ?
It can easily; depends on your equipment!
I've tried grip changes in the past, but they felt so unnatural that I quickly went back to my natural grip. HOWEVER, this wrist position both feels great (non-compromised) and fits perfectly with my swing concept (a hammer, sword or bat). It super-charged my release! Go figure.
BOOM BABY!!!! 💪👌👍😀😎🚀🎯
I've been watching a few of these and strengthened my grip playing hockey. Immediately noticed more power on my wrist shot. Question: Do you use this same strong grip on all shots?
Hey Matt! The strong grip is not as necessary when chipping and certain shots below 75 yards; but all full swings from wedge to driver, you bet!
If you were very upright before and a bit less upright now; what would be the problem if it fits the shot or task??
@@golflessons Thanks Shawn for the reply. I just need to bring this to the course now. I went from 147 mph ball speed to 155 mph ball speed with this new grip. This was with beat up range balls and my PRGR monitor. I know there is more there I just have to get use to this and trust it. If I swing through it, it goes right down the target line. If I swing at the ball it goes left, so It actually forces me to swing through it for a great result.
7i 180 is that right?
Hi Shawn, when are you coming back to tampa?
Trying for October; but borders still not open and the Delta Variant not looking very promising…🙄😕
its a super video.. i will try this.. like the all analogies, makes sense.. but there is still that question back in my mind.. why does so many pros use more natural grip.. must be a reason right.. when did a pro choose a harder way when there is easier way, you know what im saying?
Square face with a strong grip or closed face with a neutral grip ?
You can do one or the other, or a bit of both, it does mot matter. What matters is when you deliver your action in the direction you want to start the ball, that the ball gets compressed in that direction. See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement golf wrx” video as well as “through the ball vs at the ball shawn clement” and “weak grip vs strong grip shawn clement”.
Mu hits 140mph ball speed with an iron? Nuts. 👍
Awesome huh?
Any advice for drills or mindsets to have with a driver? I have a strong grip but really struggle with low ball flight and pulls/hooks. My distance is all over the place. I’m not very consistent with the driver.
Stay with the focus of delivering the tip of tee in the direction you want to start the ball at the height you want the ball to fly on. See “driver speed and smash shawn clement” for the rest
that is normal with a strong grip
Hello Mr. Clement! Love your videos. I noticed that savvy tilt her hips and is her clubface open before her take away?
Hope you give a report on Sav's tournament round, Is she improving scoring to go along with her distance ?
Just saying what Homer Kelly called the flying wedges or Hogan's supinate
Does this mean more closed grip for longer clubs like driver and wood?
You bet! Wait till we come out with our next video with me going with an even stronger grip! Amazing compression and height and accuracy!!!
Not sure I understand, Dustin Johnson has both a very strong grip and a bowed wrist at the top and at impact.
And he is very extreme in this technique; his is predicated on how much support the right hand provides throughout the swing. If he were to swing left hand on club only, it would not be very productive…

The stronge grippers you mentioned are all short hitters
I think Azinger was the only short hitter.
Hi Shawn I’ve tried your teaching methods before and was even a member of yours previously. My problem is I always over hook the ball with this method. I really noticed today that you and Mu take the club back very upright, almost swinging around your neck I’d say. I take it back much deeper and laid off than you guys. I've been playing for almost 2 years and using the strong grip is the only thing that works for my swing. One of these days I have to video myself to figure out why.
@@Herc11355 HI Herc. If it works don't try to understand!! Haha 😉
I just spent 2+ hours at the range and really noticed a difference with the stronger grip. It was especially evident with my fairways and driver. Way tighter spread.

Hitting a hammer always felt like how i should hit a golf ball but literally everyone tells you 'your grip is too strong!' While a weak bowed position feels so contrived and 'weak'.
Make sure you see tomorrow’s grip! Huge addition to this! 😀👍
HAHA holding baseball bat with pinky overlap ....2:40 golfer habits :p
So should close the face take our grip…. And do this forever?
This is not a drill and this is not a band aid and you are not cheating! So yes, this is permanent and that is so ok! 😀👍
right, is this saying close the face to target while at address? im so confused by the steps here unfortunately

Bowing never felt natural to me. Not sure why everyone is teaching it.

@@golflessons It is indeed Bro.
The real deal is the dynamic grip at impact.

I cut my right thumb one time and so I couldn't put my thumb on the club at all. Some of the best golf I ever played lol.
Shawn thank you!
Can you comment on the lead elbow position on follow through with the “strong” grip?
Grip feels great to me 😀
You will see a video called “most important video on grip ever shawn clement” and when you combine that with this one, the anatomical position of the elbow would be to allow you to get through the ball like the hammer visual.
So the tip is just to make sure you close the club face excessively at address? It seems like it would work, but how consistent is it?
Right on Chic! Amazing how they think baseball is bad for golf when it is AMAZING and EXTREMELY SIMILAR in ACTION AND FOCUS to golf.
It is difficult for me to understand how one gets the pressure down into the left foot when the head hangs so far back and must stay in the same position at impact.
Would like more golf swing details in slow motion, please. Thank you very much.

Little confused here Shaun. so you saying leave the club face closed at address swing out to the right and it will straighten itself?
I’m sure I see in one of your other videos that you close the face then have it straight by tilting and strong grip? Been trying your way now for about 4 months it’s going well but a long way to go thanks
hey Pete! for some added support, check out our premium channel at www.wisdomingolfpremium.com and dig into the new series called Wisdom in Golf 2.0!
I am aligned properly, but with this strong grip and side tilt at address, I am pushing the ball way to the right with my driver. Why is club face open when i swing with this strong grip?
1-your centre is moving forward and you lose the anchor to your swing-see “anchor your swing shawn clement” which is what you see Tony Finau and Cameron Young do
2-You are not aware of the path of the swing or can’t stay with your shot’s direction; on our premium channel, see “bolted and centred” which is the deluxe version of anchor your swing, then see “blur of club” then “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” and then see”important driver nugget” and “diagonal stance series driver draw” where you will see things nobody in the industry talks about but then hey, duh, this is why Ben Hogan and Moe Norman had so much success with the driver!!

Are you suggesting to address the ball with a normal grip and the club face closed ?
@@jerryinsc
Thanks for your reply .
@@jerryinsc perfect comment Jerry! You got it man! And yes, I have heard of Jerry Heard’s Super Swing and his grip was SPOT ON!!!

Just back from the park with a 9 iron and a dozen balls .
Excellent! Just because some of the best players do something doesn't mean that's what makes them good.
Why is it so easy to get the snap with one han, right or left and so hard when you put buth hands on the grip? Is there a secret for having success?
Use a baseball bat, which is much heavier, and you will feel that snap right away; then it is just awareness and letting the club release under its own weight when you deliver your action into your flight plan.
Could be one, the other or both! Some need strong grip AND closed face! See “predict perfect contact and direction shawn clement”
Thanks so much...going to the vid now @@golflessons
What are you advocating? A strong grip or an open club face or both?
I am saying that you don’t need to resort to bowing your wrists in the swing to get the club to square up (which is very dangerous anatomically for injury) you just need to have a grip-club relationship that is closed enough to begin with.
Does this concept apply to driver as well? Thanks!
You bet!!👍😀
MU is a beast.
Shawn, your instruction has greatly improved my golf game. My iron play has become a real strength for me. My driver on the other hand just has no distance what so ever.
Check out “driver speed and smash shawn clement” and see how you do after that; make sure that grip is solid!
Want looking through my old training aids and found the Momentus speed whoosh which has a neutral grip training handle on it. This thing works great because you take the neutral grip then place the hands in a forward press to create the strong grip and focus on throwing the big white ball at the target.
How do we line up the shot with a closed club face?
You are lining up the direction of the momentum, not the face. The face will be different at impact because the hands are leading the club through the ball.
Thank you for the reply. But just so I understand this correctly. The momentum of the shot is going to the right. I line up to the right? Please excuse my ignorance.

Kenny Perry, Jack Nicklaus, Matt Wolff, Bubba Watson…so many more! I am in great company, thank you!
@@golflessons Interesting. I'll check them out thanks.
What, exactly, do you mean by-Ah Ah Moment. I’m having difficulty in understanding what the EXACT message is here?
I've had a sore left arm for a couple of weeks towards the wrist. Now I realise why. I've been trying really hard to flatten that wrist through my swing. And I wonder why I top out at 230 metres (approximately 250 yards) with my driver and can't do better. Can't wait to try this out on the range.
Go for it J! Enjoy! Let us know how you do! Shawn
Interesting video and if you can be more concise even better
We have a few on this subject Luke; see “loaded arms shawn clement” (oldie but goodie) and “cupped vs bowed wrists shawn clement” just to name a few in our 1000 video arsenal! 😝😀
awesome video.Thanks
Great video, One point of clarity though. You showed Sav with a very strong grip but what appears to be a square face and she hits a great distance and you also propose a neutral grip with a closed face. Is this purely preference or is there advantages of one over the other.
Either-Or-or a bit of both; they are all good!
It works if you turn hips! Add that part!
Right on Dan; thank you for the great comment! 😀👍❤️
Good luck Sav! Hope you do well in the tournament!
as usual, makes so much sense
Thanks Allan!
EXACTLY!!!!! Can you hear the choir singing???? 🎶😀👍😝👌💪
@@golflessons 👌😁
Your neutral grip swing speed was 10 slower than your strong grip. Wouldn’t that be the distance gain? Or did your strong grip cause you to gain club speed?
#2!!!! Strong grip allows you to move THROUGH THE BALL instead of AT the ball.
I watched this video the other day, tried it at the range yesterday and couldn’t believe the added power. Going a little bit left at times but a very consistent strike.
Stay with the direction you want to start that ball on; use a close intermediate point like in the “alignment reload”, “blur of club” and “arc blur unstoppable momentum series” videos in our premium channel.
very helpfull thank you so much😀
Perfect, I'm sold. You hit the nail on the head. These are my issues. Joining your group.
Good stuff! Welcome home! 👍😀
What Stumble said! 😀👍
I have helped dozens of students rid themselves of Golfer’s elbow because of the strain caused by a bowed wrist.
@@golflessons i agree. it's very painful to see alot of people with wrist injury's using a bowed wrist that is why we need to keep it as natural as possible and prevent it from happening
im having a very hard time following. are you saying to use a strong grip and not worry about a bowed wrist ?
Correctamundo!
I'm gonna do this behind the back of my instructor. I lose about 40% of my power bowing the wrist and I tend to send the club inwards causing chunking. Gonna practice this.
Let me know how it goes! 😀👍
@@alienrenders ok, here are reinforcements: see “how to match backswing to target shawn clement” for path and “distance to ball with all clubs shawn clement” as the hands should be farther from the body with the longer clubs. And you do want to practice fades and draws to keep a nice balance in the path and plane of the swing.
On our premium channel, we have a series that is kind of secret from youtube starting with the “blur of club” video and then going to “arc-Blur” and “unstoppable momentum” videos. When you make a practice swing above the ball, where is the blur of club from 6 inches back to 6 inches forward headed? You want this path to intersect ball and intermediate point that you chose just a foot in front of the ball. When you KNOW where the club is passing, you can now PREDICT what will happen to the shot!
Love your passion for the game! Shawn
With driver do you close the face less due to forward ball position and less shaft lean?
Sometimes less sometimes more depending on all the other factors too! The key is in the predictions! See “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement”
You lost me when you said you want max speed after the ball.
well, it is the situation for hockey, baseball, tennis, ping pong, throwing, hammer throwing, slashing a sword through a bamboo and all other disciplines and sports. You think golf is different? Open your mind!

Some great learning moments; we will be de-briefing in the next day…👍😀
So your grip is increasing your clubhead speed? Nice hitting btw, I'm lacking distance be nice to add that 30 yards
You bet! The grip is what ALLOWS YOU TO DELIVER THROUGH THE BALL instead of being forced to release at the ball which is no way to play. See all my “throwing the club shawn clement” videos and then see “how to put the ball in the way of your swing shawn clement”
Thanks bro
@@golflessons That sentence makes so much sense. I feel like I was bailing out on the swing before I was even close to the ball.
@@jmack619 👍😀
I can't figure out, when I line the ball up near the toe of the club, the ball goes straight when I hit it... When I line it up in the middle of the club, I slice it!... Weird ! Any reason why?
It is called “gear effect”. As toe shots curve left and forgive an open face; which means your club face is too open to begin with!
Which video would you direct me to?
