I have binging all your videos on working with adolescents. Thank you SO MUCH for dedicating so much of your time create videos with such high quality content. You’ve officially become my secret mentor! Thank you, thank you, thank you 😊🙏🏽🙌🏽👏🏽
This idea of using the first sessions to have focus on building relationship is something sooo important, I´ve been doing this and I see that its the base of what happens in the next sessions.
I am so grateful I found your videos. I am in Grad school MFT. I start practicum this fall, and your videos are helping me feel more prepared when it comes time for me to start seeing clients.
I love this! I’d love to know how you guide the session with teens who come in not reluctant, but guarded. “I don’t know” “I’m good” type of responses, and claim to have nothing to talk about nor any interest in q&a rapport building activities.
I have a few videos with ideas for activities. My #1 go to are my teen question cards. Link in description to the cards. My Mindset is to allow the teen the time they need to open up. I don't push. I will make art with them or talk about what they are interested in. If a teen in interested in video games, I will let them talk all about a subject they are interested in. After a few sessions, they will start to trust you and open up. Quenby
Thank you so much for the tips. It is very reassuring to hear being yourself as a therapist is okay and works well. Had to go through my own process and it feels great to be my professional SELF!
Love your videos. They are so helpful and have such good information. I would love to see you do a sample session with a teenager too. Thanks for sharing.
Your videos are great. As a therapist who works with teens, I definitely benefit them. What do you think about online therapy with teens? What can we do to build a relationship in an online setting? like activities and projects? Your advice will be appreciated.
Sara, I am working on my Self Harm worksheets now and they will be on etsy soon. I suppose I could make a video to go along with the documents. Thanks! Quenby
My Son wants me to be his therapist. I tried therapy for him many times for years. He had one therapist for over 5 years but he was young. He wouldn't open up. We were abused. We have trust issues. Therapists have helped me in amazing ways. I've had my therapists for a long time, until they retire. My longest for over 8 years. I am going back to school to become an LMHC. My e Son was not honest with the male therapists moreso than the female therapists. Based on who our abuser was. A male. The wait lists are 18+ months long here, as I am finding out its the same just about everywhere. We live in Massachusetts. I only wish we were closer to you, you could most likely get my clam of a kiddo to open up. ❤ Thank you for this video, I feel less stressed about him getting the proper help. Could you do virtual therapy with us? LOL! I'm not sure that would work, based on health insurance guidelines... How do the new Facebook advertised "Betterhealth" etc, operate all over the US? I am thinking they are direct pay?
Thank you for sharing this with us. Sending good healthy thoughts to you and your son. I have not used Better Health but I like the concept. I would keep trying to find the right fit in a therapist for your son. It does take trial and error and time. I know how hard that can be. And....if it is not the right time for our son yet, there is always down the road. Take CAre! Quenby
Could have used your videos when my daughter was a teen☺️ She'll be 21 in June but I still enjoy your content and try to apply it to my every day life.
Whay if you work in a short-term facility what can I do to make the most of groups. I don't have time to build trust and repo ire unfortunately, so what do I do? I work in an acute care setting, and it is so hard because the kids have the right to refuse and many do. It's so discouraging. The facility focuses a lot on DBT. Do you have any links about DBT and the simplest way to understand this?
I am not trained in DBT so I can't help you there. You say you can't take time to build trust because it's short term. I would do every group like it's the 1st one then and use most of time building some trust. A group does not work without trust. Bottom Line. Period. Thank you for doing the good work in the world you are doing !
I am a Counseling intern working with a teen client for the first time. I wonder if you have worked with any teen mothers and if you have any tips or resources for working with this population. Thank you!
I don't happen to see those kids but what I would do personally is talk about directly about it. I would ask them if they wanted to be here? If they believed in therapy and if they thought it could help them at all. I would ask them what it was like to be "mandated" to do counseling. My hope it that these things would help them feel understood and like I know what position they are in. But you need to think of what would work for you as the counselor and your particular client. Quenby
Any ideas or thoughts re. Autistic teens? Our son is autistic and has a super hard time trusting new adults in his life. So the “building a rapport” part is sort of impossible, we find. Don’t think he even especially trusts us as his parents even.
Do you have a video on working with teens who have bx's that are harming others but don't want to come to therapy? I'm thinking just trying to get the parent in services buuuuttttt still wonder about any feedback/experience?
Can you elaborate? What is BX???? Behaviors? I often ask them to come one time, to try it out, did you see my other video on how to help teen actually like therapy?
How do you find a therapist? I would ask friends, and ask the school who they recommend. Then You can call the therapists and ask questions and get a feel for them. I always do the 1st session with the parents or guardians, so you can decide then if you think it is the right fit. You may have to try a few therapists before you find the right one. Thank you
Honestly I never read any books on working with teens. My best suggestion is to get an internship working with teens and be sure you have an excellent supervisor who can guide you. xo Quenby

This is the population I want to work with.
There aren't enough resources out there for this age group and it's the hardest time of the lifespan. ❤
Thank you so much. I agree and that is why I started this channel. I did not get the training I needed in grad school. Thank you Quenby

Thank you for these tips. How would you handle a resistant teen who is court mandated?

How will you know when they begin to trust you
What if they are resistant but did not have therapy previously
