Good diagnosis...Good repair... This man turned a problem vehicle, into one that can be driven daily at minimal cost!!! This was golden!!!
Good video and good job on the diagnosis. As a retired mechanic you did good. Thx
The reason the compression was down to 150 when you first checked after replacing the valve spring was that you force the engine oil out of the rings with the compressed air pressure . Once you've run the engine for 5 minutes and there oil back around the piston ring the compression will almost certainly be an equal reading to the other 7 cylinders .
I hadn’t thought about that, but that makes perfect sense. Thanks!
probably. i was thinking something else also. where that valve had been hanging open with the engine running could have the seat and valve contaminated and needed a little time to reseal properly.
Great step by step to show your thought process and eliminating things as you went. 👍
There is a reason why you want to crank a valve spring compressor down by hand. You want a feel for it.
This was such a well put together video
Good job 👏 You got a good running Chevy now
Well done, nice pace. Keep it coming.
The best video about rough idle I have seen, thanks for teaching
Good work, nice video. I appreciate that you're all business, not a long intro.
very good format on ur video. I'm not a mechanic by any means, I do have a few screwdrivers & such... but i watched this whole video & liked it. thanks for not having obnoxious music playing in the background.
Solid video. Right to the point and diagnostic work was great. Earned a subscriber with this one!
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
I subscribed too!
many years ago my son had a race engine fitted in his VW Beetle, on his way home from a race meeting it began to run on 3 cylinders. upon looking at it at home in the valve cover he noticed a broken valve spring, but saying he was pushed for time. so I made an old spark plug into an airline tool to replace the valve spring much the same way you did, in hardly any time at all. I still have that homemade adapter hanging in my tool shed. thanks for the video.
You're lying like hell
Those are a handy tool ,also will let you know if you bent the valve.
Great video.. I like that you get straight to the point in the beginning and without custom flashy intro video
It was nice that you pointed out that you had introduced the 5 Volt oil pressure problem. Many people can't admit they are capable of mistakes. Very good trouble shooting skills. Very enjoyable to watch.
If it is an LQ4, you will have piston slap and ticking when it is cold. I had the same on a Suburban 2500 with 200,000 miles, and once it warmed up, I had zero noise and towed an 18-foot race trailer 1000's of miles, zero problems.
Excellent job diagnosing the problems!
Great step by step troubleshooting got the truck running now replace the passenger side headlight upper lens
excellent diagnostics, I am not a seasoned mechanic, but the use of compressed air to assess the cylinder is a trick I'll be using going forward.
Just found your channel. Great job Diagnosing the issue. Keep up the great work!!!!!
Thanks, Kevin!
Knowledge is power, thanks for the tips and explanation of your process. good Job!
Great video. You got ran into it. Didn't have to show off your shop. You explained what you were doing. And you fixed what was wrong. Good luck to you
Nice diagnosis and what a great result for you at the end. Seems like you got lucky, you might want to keep it just because of that haha
Haha good point!
Great job and very honest I gathered by the way you spoke.
Best advice..Always buy a new battery for vehicle before you start diagnostics..I would not try to jump start old battery in vehicle you just purchased..Computer getting a spike voltage from a overcharging alternator issue is costly........
That’s ridiculous you just need to diag with a maintainer on it.
You know they have voltage regulators so that doesn’t happen now right? lol only way is if regulator is burnout which he’d already know
lol I made a mistake years ago when I bought a gM built vehicle-never again
Probably not your worst mistake.
Vehicles are at auction because they are more trouble than they're worth to most people.
Nicely done!
I had a rocker arm break on my 72 Chevy nova while on the freeway . It started back firing thru the carb ,and sounded really bad . I went to local auto parts store and fixed it for $10
Good catch. Enjoyed the video.
Great video and excellent job man
I tell you what's next. You should fix that headlight haha
If the air doesn’t hold the valve up, I have used rope in the past and filled the cylinder up till I was able to hold up the valve.
good video my first time watching my daughter works at tractor supply nice work truck good job.
Thank you. An awesome logical diagnosis.
Nice work sir!
Good job, glad it was a relatively simple fix.
Nicely Done . I wish mine would have been that simple .
Profesional tech a decade and a half here. You did a EXELENT job, what I would do and charge the customer
Thank you!
great video, great job, excellent work. that was a project adventure.
Thank you, yes it was!
Good job, great video!
Thank you!
Great Job !!!
Great video, if that tick keeps coming at the start up, it might be worth while to check valve lash. Another rocker may be little loose.
Nice find and an easy fix
Good job. It appears the engine was well maintained.
Yeah really clean under the valve covers
Thanks for sharing this video bro 🙂
Great job!!! I’ve heard that tick on them before it was the exhaust bolts they broke and made a tick on cold starts and went away when warm.
😊 I’ve had a lot of comments about the tick and you are the first correct guess! Stay tuned…
Oh the thrill of mechanics. You did good
Great video
Cool and interesting video! I liked the problem solving! Hey I even thought you had thousands of subscribers!
Wow, thanks, maybe we’ll get there! Thanks for watching!
Nice job!
Nice video man! Right on!
Well presented, I hope you do well.
Man knows a thing or 2 about trucks. Very nice. If u took that to a shop it would have cost a arm n leg for sure!
Nice work..
Great video! New sub, looking forward to more content. Thanks & take care!
Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Good job.
Thanks
COOP
...
Wow, you have the skills of a much older mechanic with years of experience.
Good job
no compression - squirt oil into the cylinder = check again - no compression = valves ! head off ~! - use a magnet on valve collets ! and cap ! safer .
Nice job great deal !
It is your fuel management system. Get rid of those lifters and change the cam in it put regular lifters in it. Read program the computer and you will have yourself a fine truck. Typical of Chevys and they put that fuel management system in some Fords get rid of it of that system
It’s the spark side that will show a misfire not mechanical side, change the oil should sort the tick out.
ECM watches the crankshaft sensor for variation to determine a misfire. This could be with electrical or mechanical. Watch the active counter/check history on a scan tool to see if any misfires for GM.
Keep or sell, depends on its use and condition.
Id do a normal maint on it
Maybe change plugs coils and some internal cleaning like seafoam then kinda go from there.
I would be happy with it, its what I've been looking for maybe not the brand but certainly a truck.
If its a daily driver thats kinda up to you. My use would be once and a wile trucks use too much gas to drive every day and ive got no place to be.
The compression is going to be fine. It's your fuel management system which is the lifters get rid of those lifters put new lifters in it and I would put a new cam in it. I put a stage one cam in mine and had the computer reprogrammed and it runs just fine
MDS lifters are a very common problem with these trucks. I would be checking the lifters and especially the one that goes with your broken valve spring. Just had to swap cam and lifters for a neighbor with a dodge hemi, mds system is virtually the same on those as well.
No MDS on heavy duty GMs
This guy is good! I neither have the patience or brains to figure that out , no wonder mechanics charge what they do
Nice job
Did you get a good deal on the truck? Can’t beat that considering it was just the valve spring.
you should start to make more videos about fixing the cars and i'm pretty sure you gonna get hundreds of thousands of views and subscribers, don't forget to send me the ice cream cone after success.
Good job/video. I'm subscribed.
Thanks, Sandy!
try 1 quart marvel mystery oil on your next oil change its always worked to help lifter noise
Nice job, only thing I would add is always use a magnet for the retainers.
or block all the passages.
Did you know that a spring has a live and a dead end.? Google that.
Great trouble shooting. What did you pay for the truck a auction?
Depending on the scan tool sometimes GM vehicles will not show misfires even though they are indeed misfiring.
That’s good to know, thanks! Definitely won’t be relying on that as much in the future
Great video. Subbed.
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Now I know thanks for info.😊
wow, you lucked out. 9 times out of 10, when the spring breaks, the valve keepers pop and drop the valve
Was thinking the same thing, he got real lucky on this one.
The one on the airbox is the maf the one on the inlet manifold is the map
Good deal.
Gm did had recall on valve springs
Never drive one home that has problems. You could turn a cheap fix into a expensive fix.
For those of us who have never been to a car auction, can you tell us what you had to pay for this truck?
Total I have about $5k into it. I have been thinking about making a video about the process of buying at auction and the true cost if people would be interested.
You're learning grasshopper
Lucky the valve didn't bend.😊
NICE!
Iam pretty sure gm had recall for broking valve springs
I’m a retired 30 year plus GM Mastertech you did a good job on that but if you ever buy one of those trucks it has Duramax on it don’t walk away run that motor is the worst diesel built and I’m not ashamed to say it
the lifters was primed up after it ran some.
I don't know if you're a professional mechanic or not but all the things that you did look really good I think you've done a hell of a job
Add a 1999 Silverado and I had the same problem one valve was not opening I couldn't figure it out so I went to the dealer and he charged me $150 for a valve spring
Use an additive with your oil change and the tic will be gone for sure... you will love the 6L its way better than any 5.3 out there .. you should get 300k more now out of her
One time i bought a truck at auction and I started it and it said low oil pressure. I thought well that's why they didnt start it. Long story short, it was an Ls and i changed the pickup tube o ring and it's been fine. Sure is a crap feeling winning a crap truck, but it's a good truck now.
There called keepers!!!
Many new vehicles will run rough if the battery is disconnected, then a new battery installed. The brain computer will need to be re-booted by a dealership for 75 bucks.
Replace the board computer. When condense water accumulate, it's drips on the board computer. That makes ght fry the board computer.
Next up-grade is DOD delete!
Service the engine and put Mobil 1 synthetic oil in it and see if the valve train tick goes away.
Hard to tell over the video, but that might be an exhaust manifold tick. Check for broken bolts on the manifolds
@@mph5896 Nah that's not an exhaust tick
I would have thrown a Borescope down the spark plug hole to see what other damage there could be.
0 compression i always going to be a valve issue, or your piston is missing, pull the valve cover and inspect
ope, yeah finished the video thats exactly what it was. everytime lol nice video buddy
Thank you!!
