  • Journey performing at the Friday’s TV show set. I don’t know too much about this show but both performances were really good. The video has been upscaled unfortunately but it doesn’t look that bad
    Setlist

    0:09 - Walks Like a Lady
    5:09 - Where Were You

@chaseharlann …you want to know about this show?? SNL was starting to fall apart in my 12 yr old opinion at the time…and then Friday’s came on to compete. I recall Michael Richards devious character always blowing things up and tearing apart his sisters (melanie chartoff) dolls. Then the mom tearing open the window. Great skit. And the black dude “Ganja Man”….and the guy taking pills…hilarious skits. Thought it was funnier than SNL when it came on. But the memory that is best was the music. I don’t recall Journey in this episode but playing 2 NOT Billboard charts was awesome. I do remember clearly The Cars performing…and Wendy O’Williams and the Plasmatics. Now making me think to look that up on YT if her performance from Friday’s is posted. It was awesome…and hilarious to me.

Journey was popular enough in 1980 to be showcased on late night TV. But they were not the global superstars that they were a year later in 1981 with the classic popular songs such as “ Open Arms”, and “ Don’t stop Believing “ from their breakthrough album Escape which catapulted them to iconic stars.

That's Michael Richards clearly visible at 9:11 of this video (in the rear center)....then at 9:22 on the left side of the screen, you can clearly see Seinfeld creator, Larry David (with his back turned to the camera - brown shirt, blue jeans) - once Fridays ended in 1982, Larry David went onto SNL as a writer...where one of the sketch performers was Julia Louis Dreyfuss. Interesting to see how that all came together over the years.

Fridays was ABC's attempt to duplicate the success of NBC's Saturday Night Live. I was a sketch comedy show that included Michael Richards (Kramer on Seinfeld later), Larry David, and Rich Hall in the cast. I think it only lasted a couple of years, but I thought Michael Richards was the stand out on the show. You saw all that physical comedy that he did as Kramer later. They had some pretty good musical guests.
