He looks great!.. and considering his time in the "fast lane" --he called it "the gypsy life"...He is still pretty coherent. It is funny though, how these types of senior Rock stars do not like to comment in any detail as to what drugs, women, arrests, etc they must have gone through...He really should write a true "tell all" autobiography...he knew so many great artists during that amazing time frame. I am from Seattle, and was aware that he had re-located there. Had no idea he was in the restaurant business with his dad! And Mike Shrieve, that young drummer featured in that Woodstock movie, had a drumming studio in Seattle for many years!...IMO, these guys likely wanted to get away from the nastier aspects of the Rock Business, and just take a break for awhile. I have to believe, when Steve Perry showed up, Gregg felt slightly dissed, no matter how nicely he talks about the situation. Why he chooses to live in such a conservative, creepy state like Texas, eludes me!

Gregg is my *FIRST* music influence. Abraxas was my first LP when I was 10 yrs old. I was mesmerized by his Hammond B3 playing on that record, and I started taking organ lessons soon after.
I've been playing keyboards, organ, synths, and piano since that day, and I'm 62 yrs young. Thanks, Gregg. You changed my life for the better!!

I went to the original Journey at Winterland in S.F. Only the first album was out. It was so incredible. Aynsley Dunbar on drums and Ross Valory were so powerful together and then Neal's guitar 🎸 blazing 🔥 away.

Gregg, I was a huge Journey fan in the early days. I still remember the concert poster that I had for decades that described the band as a group of musicians who had all had enough success that they never needed to play again and formed the band purely to do what THEY WANTED TO DO. Love what you did in that band and saw you guys a couple times back in those days! Great to hear about your later career which, I did not know.

Gregg Rolie was one of my first heros, I would have been 11 years old in 69' so when my brother had the first album I was hooked then. Became a new guitar player in 71' but I always had a soft spot for B3 and man could this guy play, and what a voice. Never could get enough of that band. Then the second album. Wow. Fast forward to Journey, and what a band they were. I was a Mahavishnu fan so the birth of fusion of rock and jazz was a great time for me, the first Journey album will always be their best. I'm glad Gregg is still at it. What a treasure.

When you take into consideration that Gregg Rolie has been involved with two of the biggest and most successful bands in Rock and also had the opportunity to play with Ringo Star and his Allstar Band with a few other giants of rock, he remains quite humble and honest about where he has been , his short comings etc. To be in Ringo Stars Allstar band you absolutely must be talented and you absolutely have to be a good guy and just a regular decent person. That's Gregg Rolie.

Fascinating that he plays by ear, and memorizes or creates the songs. I am that way, but I am trying to learn how to read music again, and although I've seen it all and I've heard it all, it's hard to absorb after you've played by ear for so many years. the ear always takes over as soon as I have heard it, and i just run with it. I'm trying to learn how to keep my eyes on the music sheet. Anyways, it is refreshing to hear that somebody of his stature and ability plays by ear also.

“Stuff on the internet;places that I saw…”. Kind of kooky IMO. A little conspiracy theoryish, if you ask me. But to each their own. The rest of the interview was great.

Good for.him on not taking "the jab". I wish I would have listened to myself at the time but I gave in under pressure.

Saw their first big show as Journey, opening for the Doobies at the Cow Palace on New Year's Eve way back when... an all star lineup for an opening act

I absolutely love the first 3 Journey records. Played the crap out of those. Thoroughly enjoy Rolie's voice, and keyboard playing...

Too bad that the original band utterly blew it. Santana has contracts and promises and Carlos refuses to stand by them..how enlightened.
And for those of you who were not there..this band was SO SO BIG. In 1971 they and The Rolling Stones were the biggest band in the world.
These guys were so different than what came before its like self sabotage.

Thanks. I felt like this interview didn't give enough details on the breakup of the original Santana band.

Wondered what Mr Rolie thought of Santana’s 4th LP Caravanserai, which to my ears was a departure to the previous Santana LP’s. Also was curious about his work on Journey’s pre Steve Perry 1st record. A great live group with a ripping instrumental “Kohoutek”. Also wondered about rhythm guitarist George Tickner’s story. Thank you for the interview with this great musician with an immense, impressive discography.

I met Herbie Herbert at Jim Gabberts TV 20. He asked me for some pot and he gave me his business card for Nightmare Productions. He introduced himself as Sy until some lady walked up to him and said "Hi Herbie" I then said, "Didn't you say your name was Sy?" to which he replied, "I have a band named the Sy Klopps Blues Band, and so I introduce myself as Sy". Herbie was wearing a tie-dye shirt and a black leather vest with a button that said "Legalize Marijuana" I did not know about Herbie's history with Santana and Journey when I met him. He is one of the most down-to-earth, kind, and gentle people I have met. I was not aware Herbie passed on to the spiritual. Peace be with you Herbie.
