  • Hello my fellow literary adventurers! Here is the list for our classic book reads for January to June 2025.
Our initial excursion will be into the world of Japanese classics. I know that this is something many of you have expressed interest in and is also an area that I would like to explore further too.
Following that, our focus is on books pertaining to family relationships and the perspective of age.
Watch the video to get an brief synopsis of each of the books to whet your appetite.

Sounds good. I have Armadale on my TBR for this winter. Moonstone and Woman in White are both fantastic.

Great list! I've read 4/6 of those and they were all fantastic reads, so im sure the other two are excellent. The Makioka Sisters is a real treat. I learned that supposedly the author was being rushed by his publishers to get it finished, so the last bit feels somewhat rushed. Otherwise, it would have been perfection.

Love the moonstone ❤ it’s hard not to fall in love with that butler and his Robinson Crusoe … you forgot to mention it was written around the same time as the koh I noor was brought to England , wasn’t that his inspiration?

Nice list. It’s good to see the expansion into world literature and not the same old western canon, from the usual handful of European countries. The Buru Quartet by Pram Toer (Indonesia) is a great read and I recommend reading Exile to give you better context on the books.
The President by Miguel Angel Asturias (Guatemala) is a fantastic vision of politics and society in the form of a story; think Thomas More’s Utopia but set in a revolutionary Latin American country.
The Cairo trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt) is a humorous and lively depiction of life in Cairo with a stunning description of the city. Walk down the streets, get entangled in a story of everyday people, and then it narrows and you observe a grand story play out.
Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata is an emotional, beautiful, and brutal story of love and circumstance. Set in the snowy region of Japan, in a hot spring house (onsen), a story unfolds between a guest and a geisha.
I hope you check them out, as three are Nobel Prize winning authors and the other is considered a national treasure. Regardless, the inclusion of more worldly books is greatly appreciated. Love your channel.

I have been reading all of Yokomizo's english translated books. They are all such a phenomenally fun read. I have to say I enjoyed Village of Eight Graves and possibly also the Inugami Curse more than The Honjin Murders, though they are all great.

To be considered a classic the book should be more than 50 years old….and all of these are…all other considerations are subjective.

I guess y’all didn’t get the memo when he merged his channels and explained, repeatedly, why there will be more modern books covered in this channel. Dude literally made two videos explaining everything.
