  • Solo Moorland Wild Camping in the One Tigris Tetra 160 & NEW GEAR for 2023
I head out to the eerie moorland for a long overdue solo wild camp using a new tent, the 'Tetra' (160 version), by One Tigris. It has been a long time since my last wild camp, almost two months; so I was really looking forward to a break in nature. The signs of spring are beginning to show now and it was nice to hear the first Cuckoo on this trip too.
I set the shelter up in a lovely area and was impressed by the ease of pitching. It has lots of room and a nice sewn in mesh inner tent (this is unique to the 160 version - the 130 does not have this inner). The new gear theme continued on this one and I take the time to show you some of the new bits of kit I will be using over the coming year.
A new mat - I've used my 'old' Thermarest NeoAir X-Lite since it was brought out, various versions have been released but I've owned the original for over 10 years! Thermarest have brought out some big upgrades to their mats with their NXT range in both the XLite and XTherm! I have now got the XLite NXT MAX - which denotes the rectangular version as I am wanting to try something with a bit more surface area for extra comfort - the extra weight and bulk is negligible.
I had a great sleep on the new mat - which is thicker and warmer and I intentionally did not bring along my usual foam mat to put down first to see if that extra 'R Value' was noticeable - it was and I was warm and comfortable throughout the night.
I have also invested in an 'Enigma' quilt by Enlightened Equipment. I've wanted to try using a quilt for years now and again, I was not disappointed. Superb quality, very warm and with a sewn in foot box in this version to ensure your feet stay covered and warm. I was very impressed with the quilt and mat and will be producing a side by side comparison video of the mats soon. I also used a new light by Klarus Light, the CL2 - which I used to achieve that 'Hygge' feeling as the light fell across the moors.
A stunning location, very relaxing and exactly what was needed to relax and reset.
I hope you enjoy the video and if you have any questions about the kit and gear I have used, please just ask and I will get back to each and every one.
I will see you on the next adventure and remember, always leave no trace.

Took me 3 separate sittings to watch this, have you been saving up your footage up 🤔. Hmm, that looks like the pitch were at with Mat (I think) when it was really wet. Shame to hear you have been ill and same with me for two weeks, these bugs seem to be so persistent now. That sleeping mat was an absolute beast but I am always throwing myself about when sleeping, so idea to be fair. Must admit I like that new gas burner you had as well and after the adjustments the company are doing, looks a good option. I have one of those mummy shaped sleeping bags and to be honest hate it, far too restricting and a main reason (I think) I never get a good nights sleep outdoors. Good to see you back out, cheers Alan

Fabulous Chris, rich in gear beauty which is always good to watch. The mat is bloody huge, looks so comfy. The size looks perfect for side sleepers like myself, good size baffles. Loved the new stove too man, the ring was massive wasn't it, no wonder it would melt steel lol!
The new light was full of features too, great to see that you can use it in different ways.

Mate, I love watching your stuff, nicely shot, good content - bit of waffle :) and well put together. Don't worry about feeding the algorithm mate, you will end up losing what it's all about. Just go out and enjoy and keep filming.
On the subject of litter I went on a day hike up around Angle tarn last weekend and found an abandoned wild camp - looks like a large group went up and got caught out in the winds last week - they left EVERYTHING!! Great big gazebo tent, sleeping bags, towels, food, litter, beer bottles, bags, some clothes, a football, just everything. I was absolutely fuming and also really sad. The place was a real mess. I only had my little day pack with me so had to put on all my extra clothing to make room for some of their kit - I also filled 3 big Aldi shopping bags (also left behind) and cleared up as much as I could carry. I ended up walking down with 1 bag and a load of wet towels etc strapped to my pack and carried the other shopping bags 2 rammed with all I could fit in - I got nearly 30Kg of their crap off the hill but was left annoyed that I couldn't get the tent down, I just couldn't physically carry it, I got most of their kit and all the rubbish but not the tent. I had to leave that and will be try to head back up with a knife and a big pack so I can remove it
Utter @rseholes the lot of them - ruining it for everyone

Nice one Matthew. Absolutely infuriating isn't it. I made a video about the importance of "Leave no Trace" many years back. I think I will start leaving the link in each video. Sadly, that will never result in behavioural change, as some people simply don't care and never will. Kudos for the litter pack out mate. ATB, Chris

Definitely a good peaceful camp Chris. I liked all the gear too and if they did a smaller version of the light I reckon it'd fly off the shelves! You're right with the location, too many have found it and mistreated it, but over time I'm sure it'll become less and less. For me, making sure it's treated well and being respectful of the area leaves it better for the next generation and I want my kids to reminisce of when they went camping in this spot or that. You'll soon be at 20k. Didn't even realise you weren't!

Thanks Phil, I stopped putting locations of camps in my videos around lockdown. It's often misunderstood for snobbery or being selfish, but it's just to avoid any undue pressure on any given spot - probably more relevant to those with massive followings. Thanks for watching mate - ATB, Chris

Good to see you out again. I use quilts (Hammock Gear) both for hammock camping and tent camping. I find quilts much more comfortable. For tent camping I take my wife's sleeping pad (Fjol) from her Amok Draumr hammock. It is heavy but much less expensive than a Thermarest or Nemo, is warm, and 25 x 78 x 3.5. I always like seeing new gear from across the pond.

Thanks for the info - this was my first ever try of tent camping with a quilt and I was impressed. I like the lesser bulk and weight - so, this could be the way forward now for me. Although I always take a few beers, so can't really focus too much on weight! Thanks very much for watching and ATB, Chris

Hi Chris, great vid, thank you. I am seriously considering this tent but my only reservation is how it performs in wilder weather - have you had a chance to test it yet. I've had mixed experiences with pyramid style tents particularly a version which shall remain nameless but tended to distort if the win-dd got up (clue) and you hadn't got the perfect pitch!! Apologies if someone has already asked this - you are just too popular......😀

Not in bad weather yet mate! Check out Lukes review in the 'Outdoor Gear Review'...... I'd always be using a geodesic or semi geodesic tent in bad weather..... But I know some teepee shelters can certainly hold their own!

I've converted to quilts tbh, particularly for the season/weather I backpack in (end of Feb to beginning of December, unless it's forecast bonkers weather). Only issue I've found is, as I'm 6'2" and a bit broad in the shoulders/gut, even with pad straps I can get occasional drafts when I'm on my side. But an extra strap helps with that. Also bought a cheapo quilt cover to use with it and my single-wall one man tent when I'm out on my tod. Some people use the straps so the quilt is tucked under the pad, though.
Also a convert to the Thermarest compressible pillow and air pillow combination.
