  • Time for a little controversy... After what looked like a somewhat breakthrough year in 2023, Lewis Hamilton's start to F1 in 2024 hasn't been great... But is this his fault, or the car's? Well here I break down the facts and give my take...

      Hamilton is Mercedes biggest weakness
      1. Lewis lack of technical background
      This had been pointed out by a former Mercedes engineer who worked with Schumacher, Rosberg, and Hamilton. Lewis doesn't have a good technical background unlike Michael and Nico. And during car development phase you need a driver that has good technical background to help your engineers diagnose issues and solve problems effectively
      2. Lewis aversion to simulators
      Simulators had become a very valuable tool not just for car development but also for setting up the car during races. This is specially important uring sprint weekend when free practice is very limited. This could very well explain why Mercedes are fumbling up their setups during sprints and are largely clueless of their issues because they don't have enough data to work with, something that a simulator data would greatly augment
      3. Lewis driving preference
      The shift to ground effect greatly reduce the effective downforce of the cars, Lewis who got so used to driving a car with very high downforce failed to develop confidence with the car in the current regulations. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that Mercedes are now just copying the Red Bull design concept while at the same time they want to satisfy Lewis demands to create a car that suits his driving preference. That wouldn't bold well together considering that how Max and Lewis have very different driving style.
      4. Lewis "social justice" advocacies.
      It isn't a secret that Mercedes suffered from a major brain drain when a significant portion of their engineers jump ship to join other teams. This issue with their hiring process became more complicated when Mercedes find it "problematic" that their team is severely lacking in "diversity.". To rectify this error, Mercedes launched "Accelerate 25" diversity and inclusion programme, where they need to fill a diversity quota during hiring process. This was spearheaded by Lewis who is a prime advocates of diveristy and inclusion in the series. Last year their issues were largely attributed to their engineers making significant miscalculations and their failure to detect and correct the said miscalculations. This seriously put the competency of their staff into question.

      @@NandoFIT-df8ly Mercedes simulator driver, Ant Davidson, says the decline of Hamilton is irreversible. He speaks looking at the data. Will be a Ferrari's problem next year. • @garrettcanavan9308
      @garrettcanavan9308 Месяц назад +10

      @satanswolf do you really believe that inclusion and diversity is the issue?
      The issue isn't Hamilton. It's merc being a victim of their own success. Other teams have poached so many of mercs quality engineers. Meanwhile, Ferrari is actively bringing in a lot of talent.
      Imo the next non RB team to win a constructors will be Ferrari. Will they do it with Hamilton? Or will they do it after he retires? It's hard to know but they are absolutely going to be the next top team imo.

    • @satanswolf
      @satanswolf Месяц назад +2

      @@garrettcanavan9308 I do not, but I think chasing inclusion and diversity instead of talent they got their priorities wrong. Ferrari is doing right with that. For now. But if the decline of LH is really irreversible Ferrari will have problems. He wants to win his 8th world title, Leclerc his first, Ferrari wants the constructors, LH will be at Ferrari next year which will probably be won by Red Bull. Is not a given that Ferrari will have a winning car in 2026 but in the mean time LH will have already changed the dynamics in the team with his personality. I'm getting to think more and more Vasseur had very little say on the LH deal. Feels more like the president's wish. Maybe I'm wrong but I believe the real fight between Mercedes and Ferrari will be with Antonelli vs Bearman.

    Wil, it's like I've been saying all along: Lewis can only perform if he has a car that's both suited for his driving style AND the best on the grid; and for that, he's been relying entirely on a team that was built by Ross Brawn and Michael Schumacher. They were the ones who implemented all the processes that made Team Mercedes a championship winning team. They built a car that was the class of the field for a decade. Kudos to John Owen, who Brawn refused to replace when he bought the team.
    The only problem for Lewis is that when they introduced the zero pod concept, Owen had no choice but to move the cockpit forward. That, added to the porpoising, was more than Lewis could adapt to. Russell, on the other hand, had been toiling in far inferior cars before joining Mercedes. So, for him it was easy to adapt. Sure, the porpoising bothered him too, but it was still far better than what he was used to. That's why he's regularly beating Hamilton on track. He had a string if bad luck last year, but if he's as consistent this year on track, as he was last year and the year before, he's going to finish ahead of Lewis.
    Since Lewis is shite at providing useful feedback to the team, which they desperately need to improve tge car, their subjected to him bitching, moaning and whinging, rather than giving useful feedback.
    This is why his move to Ferrari won't make a difference, unless they just happen to have the car perfectly setup for his driving style. If anything is out if sorts, he'll struggle; and then say it takes time to adjust. He'll complain to the team, but as are his limitations, he'll expect the team to come up with a magic solution.
    Hamilton's statistics only tell half the story. He's nowhere near as good as his stats say. He's incapable of helping a team improve to become a winner. Mostly, because he lacks the insight and knowledge, but he also lacks the patience.

I think one thing Hamiton really needs to work on, and should atleast use this year as practice for it, is his qualifying, his race pace is always good -> amazing, but his qualifying has never been his strongest suit, which is generally fine when you are in the fastest car, with a average team mate, but if you have a good team mate, even if slightly slower in race pace, you've handed to "win". This is where i think he will struggle against Leclerc who is a great qualifier, currently i don't think hes as good as Lewis in race performance, but that won't matter too much if Hamilton doesn't sort out where he'll start on the grid.

    And don't forget the year before Russell moved to Mercedes, he drove Hamilton's car in one race and almost won with that car. He would have, had it not been for a puncture near the end of the race. Meaning Hamilton didn't have to be that good when he had a really good car to mask his shortcomings if even a Williams driver could walk in and do what Hamilton was doing in just one race.

    It isn't really a preference thing. Lewis has changed his style throughout his years in F1, watch any of his onboards in the refueling and kers era. It's an issue with the consistency of the car, what drivers talk about it being on a knife edge.
    If you have to run a mile in work boots, after years of running in track shoes, you can learn to live with it. But, try running one day in track shoes, next day, flip flops and some random shoes after that. That will fuck you feet up real quick.
    2023s car was not ideal and had limited performance, but in the later half of the year it became consistent. The rear is unstable, but its CONSISTENTLY unstable, so you can adapt and drive around this problem. With the w15 it looks like the balance is constantly shifting session to session. FP3 looked decent, then 5 degrees difference in ambient temp and the car looks like it's set up for Finnish rally.
