Regular Car Reviews: 1997 Subaru Outback Sport

  • This is a car from the 90's. In the 90's station wagons were allowed to be called station wagons. In 2015 station wagons are called "crossovers" because manufacturers are fearful men won't buy their cars if they are less than 100% manly.
    I used to work in a camera shop and all the Dads bought Canon point-and-shoot cameras because they were called "Powershots." The Dads didn't want Nikons because they were called "Coolpix." Coolpix sounds like a girl's first perfume.
    In an age when men are injecting Synthol into their muscles, "station wagon" means "pussy-whipped."
    The bros loose because the Outbacks were some of the greatest cars ever made.

    The 97 Outback Sport was my first car. It was this color too. This brought back all the feels. I'm so disappointed in myself for getting rid of it back in 2007. Just ran the carfax on it yesterday and it went through 5 owners in the past 8 years and was just given a salvage and junk title 2 months ago. I failed it. Tell the owner never to sell his. He'd regret it the rest of his life.

      1998...the final year of the Monte Carlo just being a 2-door Lumina, '99 brought the "NASCAR style" body panels. I only know this because a friend of mine had a '98 Monte. It had a keyless entry remote and it was like black magic back then! My '91 Escort I was still rolling at the time didn't even have power locks or windows...and I don't even think they were an option.

      Benjamín Valenzuela This car is exemplary of the trend that so many are following - the cars are aging (and ballooning, and sagging) with the generation that originally embraced them. Look at an NA Miata next to an NC - an old Impreza vs a current one - or *shakes head* - a 4th generation Civic hatch vs an 8th. As an 80's and 90's car fan, the world really did end on December 31st, 1999.

    • @97I30T
      @97I30T 9 лет назад +2

      ***** They also made the Outback significantly larger in 2010 because so many customers bitched and moaned about the back seats being too small in the previous generations of Legacys and Outbacks.

    • @97I30T
      @97I30T 9 лет назад +5

      ***** It's not even small. Haha. It's just not as tall as the other crossovers out there so it appears smaller. In terms of the Outbacks footprint, I wouldn't be surprised if it is just as big as a Ford Explorer or Honda Pilot. It's actually more closely sized to a midsized crossover rather than a small one. My Mom has a 2013 Outback. It absolutely dwarfs my 2004 Volvo V70, which is more comparable in size to the older Outbacks. I like the Outbacks better when they were smaller too.

  • @s0nnyburnett
    @s0nnyburnett 9 лет назад +38

    Never thought I'd get to see this. Now I want to keep my 98 even more.
    It's a great quirky car from when Subaru was cresting during the WRC. Now Subaru has peaked and most of the models have gone vanilla to push volume rather than innovate in a time when every car company offers AWD crossovers. I hope Subaru can find that quirky unique aspect of their vehicles again or else they'll soon end up like Honda and Nissan, just shadows of their formers selves selling unremarkable vehicles.
    Sadly rust will kill the suspension, the 2.2 is fine below 40mph but gutless above that and sometimes I find it difficult to merge getting on the highway. Still a beast in the snow and fun at lower speeds.

    • @powermatt
      @powermatt 9 лет назад +5

    I own one of these and you've described it so well! They punch way above their weight in practicality and everyday use.
    The 4speed auto is a workhorse if not a little clunky between shifts and needs another gear and closer ratios, but you can put it in 3, which tells the center diff to leave power at 50/50 F/R and it's pretty good.
    I recently got to drive a same generation Legacy Outback with the 2.5L and the interior of that car actually makes it feel like a much nicer place compared to the Impreza but doesn't shift it's weight in the corners nearly as nice.

    Still got my 1993 Impreza hatchback with a manual transmission, with a little over 565,000km (351,000 miles) on the clock. Bought an Outback a couple of years ago, but I can’t part with my old Impreza. It just did everything you ever asked of it; daily commuting, moving house, camping and ski trips down dirt roads...and it just kept on going. It isn’t worth selling, and there’s no way I’m going to give it to a scrap yard.
    Thinking of swapping out the struts and springs for ones from a Forester to give it a cheap 2 inch list, and use it for my mountain/camping/bush walking vehicle.

    I had a 99' version of this car 2.2L, 5 speed manual, white and Grey 2-tone, and the 2 little spoilers on the hatch. I wish I had kept better care of it and not blown the motor, but it was just so much fun to drive it hard, especially in the winter.

Like, what do you mean I gotta do it all again but it's upside down and the enemies are twice as hard? Insanity! The fact that full completion of the game is 201%, not 200%, and not 100%, but yes, 200, plus 1, so 201%, just goes against all logics of things math. Like, what's the super super secretly hidden chamber with equally as secret item or artifact worthy of the extra 1% in that equation? It blows my mind!
    Seriously though, what is it, because I never made it that far past the second castle.

    You hit the nail on the head with the line about sitting in class looking about the window watching the snow. That was me in Northern VA in 1997. I drive a 98 Outback Limited with the 2.5 and I often think back to when that car was new. I was a sophomore in high school with dreams of supercars in my mind. 20 years later, I'm happily driving a paid for 20 year old Subaru. The car is great in the snow, ok on mileage, and easy to work on. I think the Japanese auto makers hit a high water mark in the late 90's as far as comfort and ease of driving. The newer stuff is taller, wider, and much harder to see out of. I'll keep driving mine until it can't be fixed.

    Wow. Ok. I have a lot to share on this one so take a deep breath...
    I was 17 years old and I was psyched when my dad bought one of these. We drove it everywhere in the snow, rain, back woods of PA, back woods of EVERYWHERE. I'll never forget when my dad let me take this car (aka the good car) to homecoming and prom because I got good grades that year. I LOVED THIS CAR. This car started my overall Subaru dedication. Because of this car I started to learn about rally, the WRC and Subaru's rally heritage. This model was awesome in 1997 and like you said, its still awesome now. A timeless classic! Unfortunately our family car was wrecked in a ditch when someone drove my sister off the road in the mid 2000s.
    As for Centralia... I went on a photo excursion there a couple of summers ago. We took shots of the abandoned highway (which I saw you parked at) and explored it as many people do. The heat coming up from the highway was intense that day. You could feel the fire below you.
    This RCR was a real throwback for me. Thank you!

The gas mileage was crap, but back then who cared? That 2.2 was a dog... no guts at all, but it was so happy to rev it almost didn't matter. I'm driving a 2008 Impreza these days, which averages about 26 mpg combined. With 0.3 more liters displacement and 33 more hp. The miracles of modern engine tech.

    • @eargesplitten9876
      @eargesplitten9876 9 лет назад +1

      ***** Actually, the XV just looks bigger because the hood shrunk. '97 legacy wagon was 183.9-184.5" depending on trim. XV is 175.2", the Outback Sport is 172.2". So the XV is three inches longer than the old impreza,, but still 8-9" shorter than even the second gen. It's over a foot shorter than the fourth gen legacy wagon. The 90s Forester looks the same size as an XV because the forester was based off of the Impreza body.
      I did look these numbers up, I'm not a big enough nerd to have them memorized.

      CubNole Nope, but whoever did the timing belt and overtightened the bolt sped up the process a lot. Even with bent valves once I replaced the bolt and timing belt it ran... kinda. Check out NASIOC, there's tons of old EJ22 cars running around with 200k+ on them, some with original head gaskets.

      CubNole 191K on my 99 OBS and still going. At this rate the body will rust out before the engine dies. The NA 2.5L was the head gasket eater. The 2.2L was an older and much more reliable motor. I've seen a couple with 350k+ on them. The 2.5L turbos have their own set of problems but don't eat through head gaskets like the NA.

I can remember leaving high school after an early dismissal due to snow and pulling out on to the road. There would always be a line 1/4 mile long to get from the side road to the main road. After getting to the stop sign to turn, I'd look behind me to see how long the line was. Then I'd give it the beans and go full sideways out on the road for half the school. Not boasting any power or anything, I just did it because it was fun. The next day was all "was that you leaving the school parking lot?" Umm yeah it was!

    I own a 2001 Mercury Sable (with the Duratech HELLZ YEAH) and I was relatively excited when you did a review on it. My family owns a 1997 Subaru Impreza Outback Sport and I am HELLA excited you did a review on it.
    Our girl had less than 150k miles when we bought it, and now has over 250k miles. (all in 6 years) She is the same color, looks exactly the same as the one in the video, (except she is stock) but is a manual. She's taught two teenage girls how to drive a straight shift and the clutch is still going strong. Her valves leak oil like there's no tomorrow and she smokes more than a prostitute waiting for her next John but as long as you keep oil in her she keeps going. You can't go over 4,000 RPM without her sounding like she's going to explode right then and there. She clunks like mad and you can't see at night because the headlights are so bad, but we wouldn't trade her for anything. What a wonderful and safe car. She's been rode hard and put up wet but we do not own a car with any more try than our old Subie.
    Hopefully Mom's "new-to-her" Baja does just as good of a job, she's has huge shoes to fill. My Sable knows she will never be as good as that old Subie. I can't complain about the Sable though, for what it is it has been one hell of a tough car.

And the wheel bearing in the back was so bad I had to disable awd because it was screwing with it. For some reason it was still a fun car to drive when I wasn't fearing for my life. Needless to say it was a temporary car until I got my $300 Buick LeSabre with 273,000 miles. Which actually had a starter go out and that was it. I just replaced it and the car ran.
