- Since his earliest performances in 2004, comedian Rory Scovel has always made every attempt to incorporate improvised elements into his stand-up sets. In March of 2018, he decided to find out what would happen if he fully improvised the show from start to finish for six straight nights. Set at Relapse Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia, this documentary directorial debut for Scott Moran showcases the highs and lows of a comedian putting himself through an intense test of spontaneous humor for six different shows.

This was from start to finish incredibly enjoyable and hilarious. The part where he has 4 audience members wearing table cloths as he preaches like a cult leader was great

Bob’s story made this video even more interesting, what an incredible back story for a venue and an incredible performance by Rory. I think Mark Normand described it perfectly, it felt like he was hanging around with his friends just trying to make each other laugh.

This is one of the most unique specials I've ever seen. Two men on two very different journeys that for whatever reason really fit together. Inspiring on all fronts. Killer, killer week of shows!! I just looked in up (late 2023) and it looks like Relapse Theatre is still open!! Congrats, dudes!

It's really unique to be sitting as a viewer knowing its all improvised, simultaneously enjoying the comedy and feeling the stress of finding the next angle it could go as if I was on stage. Loved the special.
Rory is a true student of comedy. He’s like an unbeatable escape artist with every trick in existence up his sleeve. Creating his own new challenges and obstacles to keep the game fresh and constantly hone his craft - German Guy, glad-handed southern dude, etc.

best comedian ever. I was lucky enough to go see his show at the relapse theatre in 2018 for his taping of his netflix special and it was legendary . getting to know the history with the theatre was dope too

Rory is just the definition of positive energy! Mark Normand put it well when he described it like "being drunk/high and killing with your friends." It felt more like shit shooting between friends, than viewing a rehearsed performance and it has changed how i'll view comedy specials! Appreciate you!

Yeah, I've heard people do this, but only very isolated. Not enough to think it's a valid option, just a few people making a malapropism. Like all intensive purposes, but it hasn't caught on yet.

Rory Scovel Tries Standup For The First Time is one of my favorite specials that I can rewatch over & over, so finding out about this was so exciting! These shows seemed so fun & I hope to one day be able to see Rory perform in person. The story about Relapse was incredible. It seems like a really cool venue that I would love to be able to visit if I’m ever in Atlanta (& it’s still open). That’s another thing I love about comedy specials like this where the venue is integral to the performance - we as the audience learn what venues performers love to perform in & what makes them so special. Anyway, great work by everyone involved & thank you for getting this out there.

This and Bo's Inside have been the coin for 2020-2021. As someone lucky enough that I could stay inside quarantined the whole time, they both hit hard. Bo's is how I felt and Rory's is that feeling of getting out for the first time and bursting with energy.
I've Liked Rory for years, but that just got promoted to Love with this special. It's amazing how he can improv sets better than most other comedians' scripted sets.
This was one of the best comedy specials I have seen. Rory is a genius and the parallel story of Bob's persistence and faith is magic.

Criminally underrated. One of the most talented comedians of the last decade. His ability to riff and improvise is legendary and it reminds me a lot of Conan in the best way possible. Probably one of the reasons Conan has been a big supporter of him for years now. And now he just drops an unexpected, completely improvised new hour + set on us. There's not a lot of comedians who can do that and have people actually care and want to see it. Rory is right up there with guys like Louis C.K. and Bill Burr just to name a couple. Thanks for this Rory, please come back to Colorado next time you have a chance!

Mark Normand, like everyone else involved in this incredibly well done project, is pure magic. This is the kind of energy that makes _me_ have energy- like dragging out all my spray paint and climbing up walls to paint ‘em energy. Thank you guys for this reminder on how scary and unpredictable it is to create something beautiful.
Art can be goofy and earnest at the same time and I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever seen that woven as delicately and as masterfully into something so watchable as this.

Watching again for the first time since this was released(a year ago now!) Thank you for this gift. It is delightful. I was so sad to look up the Relapse Theatre after watching again, and seeing it is still closed.
