Pinot Noir can be a polarising varietal, probably because a) it is rarely done well, and b) it can take on such a wide variety of flavour profiles. On the lighter side, people talk about things like “cherry”, “strawberry”, and sometimes “raspberry”. But on the more interesting side, words like “forest floor”, “twigs”, “truffle” and “mushroom” appear. In a nutshell, Pinots can take on a host of different flavour profiles. And whether on the lighter side, or the more earthy side, Pinots can also take on very different levels of spiciness - from very mild to exquisitely piquant. At the best (sadly, very rarely achieved), Pinots play in all those boxes, tying varying degrees of all those flavours into one of the most captivating experiences wine has to offer.
Moorooduc is one of the top five Pinot producers in the Mornington Peninsula, which we reckon is Australia’s best region for Pinot, and the 2015 Garden Vineyard lives right up to its heritage. The primary flavours in this wine are dark cherry and wild strawberry, but underlying that are vibrant herbal notes. In short, it brings to mind childhood memories of running through a field on a late summer day - bright and elevated, but as you are tromping the ground, the soft scents of the earth rise to engage you. A wonderfully captivating Pinot Noir. Would be so ace with duck pate.
If you love Pinot Noir, other fantastic Pinot producers you must check out in the Mornington include Yabby Lake and Stonier. Outside of Mornington, The Ninth Mile in Beechworth crafts some of the most robust and unique Pinot Noirs we have ever tasted. Over in the Macedon Ranges, Curly Flat is an absolute AUS icon for Pinot Noir. And no conversation of Aussie Pinot is complete without a mention of Ghost Rock in TAS. Check them out.
