3 years sober now. I had the shakes in the morning, making a drink first thing. I'd get sick if I went too long without. Hated myself. Tried to quit on my own and had a seizure. Luckily my mom was there and called 911. Ended up relapsing twice after that. 3 hospital stays. Now I'm sober and feeling much better, life is looking up again. Its not easy, but it is possible. Finding a hobby to bring my mind out of "drinking mode" greatly helped, as did meetings and speaking with other people who fight the same urges

the part of the withdrawal equation you left out was how alcohol also inhibits glutamate, which leads to an increase in the amount of excitatory glutamate receptors. i think the firing of these excitatory neurotransmitters are also what causes the rapid heart beat, high blood pressure, panic attacks, etc.

    • @hailnohero
      @hailnohero 4 месяца назад +4

I read that Taurine supplements can help lower those glutamate firings so you experience less of the bad side effects. I currently ordered some after doing some research. I stopped alcohol couple weeks back but still have rapid heartbeat sometimes. Resting heart rate sometimes at 110 so I'm hoping this Taurine will help with that! Thanks for sharing it's important more people know those who are detoxing.

For me, the worst thing about quitting alcohol was a feeling of dread, although I’m not sure that’s the right word for it. Imagine you’re driving past a little town. You wonder what it would be like to live there. You are certain that life would be an endless, black, featureless horror. A thick, stifling nothingness. The world you can see is only a facade. Beneath it, behind it is the void.
It was like that for months, gradually subsiding. It was better alone. With people I had to pretend it wasn’t happening. You can’t just interrupt a meeting at work to go Kurtz on everyone and say, “The horror. The horror.” Or maybe you can, I guess I didn’t try.
    0/10, would not recommend

@@sci_ent_ificsui_neg9236 Interesting. It felt quite different than the other flavors of anxiety I'm more familiar with. I don't think I had any overt hallucinations, but then I don't on psychedelics, either.
I'd already proven to myself that I wasn't capable of gradual alcohol reduction. I did use phenibut (and, later, theanine) as one would use benzodiazepines in this context. Kept things at a level I could tolerate, but still very unpleasant.

My story: I was a binge drinker for 50 years. How did I stop drinking so easily? I skipped the counseling and anonymous platitudes. I went to my doctor. He gave me a choice of two remedies. Another awesome video, Dr Syl! Plus extra kudos for doing it while hungover 😅
I’d like to say as well that no one’s immune to alcohol dependency. I’m a qualified Alcohol & Other Drug Counselor and I still spiraled into dependency, even with knowing what I know.
It started with planning my days around getting everything done ASAP so I could go home and start drinking, and soon I was drinking a *lot* daily. I won’t go into full details, but let’s just say that eventually I started my days with ciders and also had my lunch breaks in my car (three guesses why 🙈😅), and I still drank at home every night too.
My psychologist asked me to pick one day of the week to not drink on to see how I’d go - when I struggled with just one day of not drinking I had that moment of clarity (finally lol), so I went cold turkey and I haven’t drank since. That was about 4 years ago.
The thing that I found difficult was not being believed or taken seriously. Close friends would insist there was no way I had a problem, and I’d have to point out that I’d been making sure no one realized how much I was drinking because I didn’t want anyone to try and stop me. I had to literally argue with friends that I had a problem even when they knew I was a D&A Counselor. I mention this because anyone can have struggles like these going on privately/secretly, even if they “don’t seem like that type of person”. If someone confides in you, please believe them 🙏🏻💞

Congratulations, and good for you telling the truth. So many people have the incorrect impression that an alcoholic is someone predisposed to abuse alcohol. The fact is that alcohol is a highly addictive poison. Like cocaine or opium/heroin. Developing alcohol use disorder is just a matter of the amount and frequency of use. Addicts do not want to hear about anything that leads to suggesting they not use, and thus this information is very unpopular when I speak about it.

@@RinoSchiavoCampo Thank you for your kind words 🙏🏻💖 And you’re definitely correct about alcohol being addictive. Anything that can dampen emotional pain has the chance of being abused, because people are usually trying to cope with unbearable and overwhelming feelings but not knowing how to do that, and things like alcohol do that very effectively (unfortunately). I think it was Dr Gabor Maté that said we should ask not why the addiction but rather, why the pain? Because substance abuse usually stems from unbearable emotional pain…
I’m happy to say that I’m still sober, and I calculated the actual date and it’s 4 years next month 😇 I joined a sobriety group on RUclips too, just to put in some additional support networking (you can never have too much).
If anyone else is on a sobriety journey or wanting to get sober, I highly recommend The Life Boat on RUclips. They go live twice a day to operate kind of like AA/NA meetings or check ins. They have a Facebook group and Discord server too, and everyone there is so so kind and supportive! 🙏🏻✨💖

"youre stuck with your body and you've got to get along with yourself"
A big reason i personally drink is bc of the self hate. I'm 32 and i know i have to face this. Telling myself "i'm stuck with this body" kind of feels like i'm disconnecting one from the other, if that makes sense. For example, just bc i hate myself doesn't mean i get to treat my body like this. Which then can allow me to focus on what i can do to help this "body im stuck with" instead of feeling like I have to make it through each day with this body. IDK perspective is key!

We've been seeing the criteria of hyper alcoholism together at some of his home training; yet a few days after, he went above 5 glasses per 2 hours during the whole night...and the second night of doing that, he insisted on taking his car after 3 hours of sleep (his smell of alcohol was still so strong it gave me nausea, and i know he had smoked pot too). the more he drinks, the more he's convinced i want to "manipulate" him :'( and says that the problem is not his drinking, but my reaction to it ( though most of the time i have none, knowing how sensitive he is....) . The more he drinks, the more he doesn't respect me (not showing up at meetings with our shrink, saying my fatigue is an excuse though i recently had cancer treatment and still anemia+ long covid, getting mad for nothing more and more often ...) he was seeing an addictologist until this year (he was almost sober in jan/feb after 3 months of selincro) but he stopped seeing hem , although he keeps on drinking more and more on average. I think he considers he's still in control, although not following any of WHO's guidelines for alcohol intake. ... is there anything i could do? do you have any advice for the BF/GF of a person suffering from alcoholism?

Btw don’t take my advice too seriously cos I’m literally a child like I’m not gonna say how old I am cos like ✨StRaNgEr DaNgEr✨ but I’m a child, the only reason I’m offering my advice is cos I personally struggle with alcoholism and I have a drink every morning, (although it’s better than it was like I used to be drinking continuously thruout the day) and in my personal experience it’s because my parents got divorced and my brother has a drug problem wich is stressy asf anyways feel free not to read this because I have no idea what I’m talking about 👍👀👍 Hope ur bf ends out ok :))

Whilst in they would give me chlordiazapoxide to stop me from having seizures, then discharge me a few hours later ... but NOT admit me ... despite me telling them I would be back in as soon as the meds wore off (due to not having money.
This happened many times until I met with the recovery service, who promised to give me the meds for a home detox ... they procrastinated over several weeks until I bit the bullet myself and just stopped (taking the risk) ... I persevered on my own with no help and on day 10 of abstinence I had a tonic clonic seizure in Tesco, dropping from standing and smashing the the left side of my face in from the fall. Broken orbital socket.
In the end I had to take a stupid risk to end that cycle ... at times it felt like the recovery place were trying to keep themselves employed ... a little cynical but NOT entirely untrue.
I'm alcohol free now and have been for several months, unfortunately I had to do it the hard way.
