      AWACS are not exactly sitting ducks against enemy missiles. They're huge targets that can't maneuver, but they're also slow so they can notch relatively easily, and they have a gigantic radar dish they can use to decoy the missile with chaff, jamming, phantom returns, etc.

    • @GM-fh5jp
      @GM-fh5jp 5 месяцев назад

      Modern AWACS are loaded with voodoo electronic counter measure suites.
      An incoming missile has to be fast and smart to burn through the jamming wall they can put up let alone onboard trail-able decoys floating temptingly just 50m astern.
      That 37M was tired and out of breath by then, no way it could have made those last few turns that were required for the final intercept.

      The runway can be repaired in a matter of days, and the buildings replaced by temporary setups. It's not much of a loss since no personnel.
      But even if they had totally destroyed an airfield, planes and all, Russia losing one of its remaining 6 AWACS is a catastrophic loss even without losing the flankers.
      Definitely an American win here.

    I remember as a kid seeing a column in an aviation magazine comparing the F-16, MiG-29, and Mirage 2000. Unfortunately the one that should be included is the F/A-18 as well.

    This is a total and catastrophic loss for Russia. Losing 1 of their only 6 AWACS is irrecoverable. And losing two Flankers ontop of it? Just to take out ONE U.S. Airfield that can be repaired and re-equipped in a matter of days?
    In no way is that a win.
    Definitely an American win here.
    And if the F-15, F-16s were being flown by actual seasoned pilots, I doubt the Russian jets would've scored a single kill at all and they would've lost the bombers too.

      Absolute dog shit is what it is. Not sure why GS thought it’d be a grand idea to place an A-50U so close to the front that a 60 mile-launched AIM-120 took it out. Those A-50’s have a detection range of around 500km, maybe more, so there was no need to do any of that.
