    i never could imagine building a cnc machine would be affordable until now, thanks for all the detailed info... i just wanted to ask you, if i would like to builnd one like yours but 1x1 meeter,, do you think a belt like yours would work well or i need to use ballscrews instead? thanks

      The belt would not be the main problem in that case! You would need thicker axis for the linear bearings. Belt would work pretty much the same with mine!

    Nice video, I'm also building a cnc, I also have to pick between grbl shield and ramps 1.4 with mega and lcd. I used tmc2208 steppers after finding out the AliExpress ones are less strong.

      Erik cramer thanks Eric! I don't know man, I 've been working on the ramps some days now, and I am pretty fascinated..I mean, its what? 20 bucks more? Just the ability to adjust the feedrates while running a piece of code is well worth that! Then you have SD reading (your machine is stand-alone) and a ton of other welcome features...Don't get me wrong, I freaking love the little Unos and the work some people around the globe have put on them, just thought to take a look at what the Marlin (in my case) guys are doing there, and they are also doing freaking good!

      Erik cramer Sorry, got excited on the boards there! As for the TMCs, I think that they run quiet but cant feed as much current compared to the A4988 ones (not too sure about that though..)

      NEMA 17, NEMA 23, NEMA 35 ..... 1.7" FRAME.. 2.3" FRAME...3.5" FRAME ..... all are produced with hugely varying specs.... very much made to order... if you wish....
      EBAY. 3 or 4axis CNC STEPPER MOTOR KIT...
      I bought a 4axis controller and 3 NEMA23 400Oz/In single ended shaft stepperz... all under $200 CDN.

    La trazione a cinghia va bene per le stampanti 3d che non trovano alcuna resistenza durante il movimento degli assi, questa tecnica nei CNC comporta una bassa risoluzione ed una facile perdita di passi durante la fresatura.

      enrico morganti amico mio Enrico.Lei ha assolutamente ragione in quello che dici, e certamente un CNC con cinghie non avranno la coppia che si trova in una rispettiva vite. ma penso che ti sorprenderà tenere quel cinturino! In effetti, usando microstepping, le mie impostazioni per questa macchina sono 99,67 passi al millimetro. Non è male! questo cnc era destinato ad un'università, che probabilmente sarebbe usato da persone che ancora imparano come usarlo. Per questo ho deciso di usare cinghie di trasmissione, che danno una coppia sufficiente per essere usato come una macchina fresatrice, come necessario ma non ad autodistruggersi!

      @@ZepLabs I miei complimenti per la tecnica di costruzione.
      Usando il microstepping si riduce notevolmente la coppia del motore.
      Inoltre per muovere gli assi di 1 mm è necessario usare un numero di step preciso e senza decimali, lo step di 0,67 non è gestible dal cnc, che ripetuto centinaia di volte genera un errore non indifferente.

    You shouldn't be using the 3d printer shield. CNC router firmware like GRBL does not support Arduino mega 2560. Try using a uno instead.

      12458 SSE There is some firmware (modified Grbl) to run on the 2560...It comes from the 3D-printer-guys, to whom , with all the sensors, heatbeds, extruders, fans and stuff , pins on the Uno are not enough!

    How do you attach the 3 axes and the their linear bearings to their respective platforms? I see the bearings ride on the steel rods, but how do you attach the axes to the bearings?

      Dion Jennings Hey Dion! I used some really strong epoxy. I have tested it quite a bit and I am confident that the plywood will be taken apart long before the glue breaks!

      Ok yes, that makes sense. I know the epoxy you are referring to, I always keep some in my workroom. It is indeed very strong. Thanks for the clarification. I'm following the video series and I hope to build the Quartz machine soon :)

      The bases of hold the motor and bearing blocks on each axes, for PRECISION GROUND THREADED ROD, w/anti-bavklash nut, or BALLSCREWS ... or BELTS&PULLEYS... or some are direct drive to ballscrew, from the stepper motor,....your choice

    Thanks for uploading such informative video,
    when we change bits while carving in wood, do we have to change some setting in mac3 software, and can we change bits in mid of carving, if yes then what precautions we should take for such changes. reply as soon as possible. Thanks

      Hey Durgesh! Thanks for the feedback!
      Why would you want to change the bit in the middle of a cut though?! You mean between 2 different operations, roughing-finishing per say?!
      Usually when changing bits ( for whatever the reason!) you have to let your firmware know the difference in height. Adjusting your Z! If you were just touching the material surface with the first tool and Z=0 as an example, after replacing to a shorter/longer tool (even if you use the same exact tool, you may reposition it higher/lower inside your collet) you should move your Z until the new tool is also just touching the same surface and set your Z origin there!
      As far as precautions go, you just have to make sure that your spindle wont turn on while you are changing the tool, having your hands close to it! If it is controller activated, it 'd be better to keep it unpluged while making the change I guess..
      You never know when a loose neutrino decides to hit your controller!
      I 've seen a guy some time ago (cant recall his name) who was closing the circuit powering his spindle through the spanner he used to untighten his collet! So if that spanner was anywhere else in the shop, instead the place it was supposed to be resting, spindle wouldnt even work 😁

      There is a big confusion in my mind that -
      How to choose bits diameter for carving, e.g. 0.5mm or 0.3mm etc,
      is any settings are there which tells cnc machine that which diameter of bits are used,
      Because area of carving in each movement depends upon diameter of bits,
      Which section of cnc deals with bits diameter, eg. CAD or CAM or Mach3 or any other.

      @@Durgeshkr00 i see! CAM is what you are after! In CAM you take your CAD design (the actual thing you want to make) and you specify your tool dimension (and some other things, like feedrates, or maximum depth of cut per pass, etc.) and it generates your Gcode file. This one contains all the movement commands! So then you buffer that to your controller, whether it is Mach3/4, grbl, LinuxCNC, or Marlin in this case, and it translates those commands into actual movement on your machine's motors!

      So if you specify in your Cam program that you 'll be using a 0.3 mm bit, the Gcode file generated would be slightly different from the one you 'd get if choosing a 0.5 mm bit!

    I am unable to open the plan in dropbox any ideas as to how i can open it? Also how much did the whole build cost?

      lucas watson hey Lucas! I think you cant preview .skp files into dropbox. You have to download it and run it into sketchup (either native or the online version). Let me know if any problems! Thanks.
      The whole machine was about 250 bucks (roughly)

      Ευχαριστω φιλε Αργυρη! Ιμαντες για ταχυτητα! Οι συγκεκριμενοι μπορουν να σηκωσουν και φορτιο αρκετο (κι ας μην γεμιζουν το ματι!). Επισης το μηχανημα προοριζεται για εκπαιδευτικους σκοπους ( ΤΕΙ μηχανικων) οπου και πιθανοτατα θα το σκαλιζουν συναδελφοι σε καποιο εργαστηριο η κατι τετοιο..και ο ιμαντας συγχωρει λαθη! (Ελπιζω να "πηδηξει" πανω στο ραουλο πριν αυτοκαταστραφει δηλαδη!) Ναι το ρουτερακι ειναι μακιτα και το βαζω κατα καιρους στο αλλο σι εν σι 🍺

      Mach 3 is the normal route for most NEMA Stepper Motors, .... Fusion360 another, I believe has options.
      This unit is arduino-based .... so seems not much control beyond 2.5axis CAD/CAM ... A plotter/,Printer scenario....
      not real intorpolated 5axis including live tooling.... BIG DIFFERENCES ABOUND....
      nonetheless... Plotting small holes and delineation of patterned shapes makes for much much less layout guesswork and Fudging....
      Add a rotary axis on the table would be beneficial .... and was done soon after this video...
