    Great Job Tom!!!! I was thinking about that: How to read spin... I just moved from recreation "ping pong" to table tennis playin' in a club and one my major struggles is to read spin properly. Now I've got another clue on how that works and I'll apply those precious tips tonight. Thanks in advance!!!!

    To follow up on the Henrik comment (5 years ago, but top of the comment queue), there are a few opponents whose serves completely confuse me (recreational club but with some top notch players). It would be nice to have an explanation of what the served ball of combo serves is doing once it hits on my side of the table [spin direction] and the best options for both an aggressive return and a "Hail Mary - I just need to get it over then net - return". Another challenge: some backspin serves can be backspinned back, but at other times/other players the return goes directly into the net.

    Your vids are my favorite so far. They definitely suit my learning style. Additionally, the sound quality and pace are great...not too long and boring, but not too short either. You hit all the points needed.
    P.S. You're topspin serve that appears to be a backspin serve until the last second where you brush upward, looks so good and doesn't look extremely difficult to learn. I have a tourney coming up in March and I'm determined to add that one to my serves before then. Thanks!

    This is most helpful video, together with the one on returning backspins, bumping me to semi final in company double game ^^
    The downside is that as I am consistent returning backspins, my opponents start to serve me more low long top spins as their beginner partners have trouble returning my pushes...What do I do now? Can you make a video on how to return low long serves, either top or back spins? I try to topspin back but can’t get over net some times. Have trouble chopping back with such low angle also...

    You can make a top spin serve using the underspin stroke. All you have to do is as u complete the underspin stroke in service, at the last point of contact, pull back the paddle.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +4

      Best thing to do is watch bat angle on contact. If the bat is open and brushing under ball, there has to be backspin. There could also be sidespin, but crucial element is reading the backspin part.

    Dear Tom !
    Thank you very much for your interpretation !
    Let me tell you some remarks . A sidespin serve need not to kick up sideways , a sidespin can be done almost straight ahead.
    So to do you have to pull the bat nearly paralell with the endline of the table when sidespin serve generated.
    And at 5:42 what does it mean ".... backhand side topspin serve ..." What are you getting at ?
    It is a topsin serve with with the backhand side of the bat or something very special ?
    Why did you omit the Corkscrew spin serve ?

      Your opponent will give you clues with their body shape, arm movement and bat angle. You need to stay alert and get ready to react quickly. The more you practice returning serves, the easier it becomes.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  6 лет назад +2

      So a little bit of disguise on that last one. The bat angle looks more open (which suggests possible backspin), but I don't brush under the ball - so no backspin. Instead I brush up the back of the ball, so it has some topspin.

    Nice vid! please correct me if I'm wrong, the 8th serve, although is the movement of a backspin serve maybe, I guess the ball probably is getting no much spin at that one by how it moves and bounces, am I right? I've been a player for several years but my serve reading I guess is my worst skill overall.

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  7 лет назад

      Hi, yes the 8th serve is a little bouncy, but still backspin (with a bit of sidespin). Not heavy backspin, but it needs to be treated as backspin. But you judged it well.

    5:43 why is that topspin and not backspin serve? The racket went from up to down when I watched at 0.5 speed?

    • @TomLodziak

    Hi coach,
    Is there a good mysterious reason why I saw a lot of players touching their side of the table near the net?

    • @TomLodziak
      @TomLodziak  5 лет назад

      Some players do this to remove sweat from their hand. They do it on this part of the table, as the ball is unlikely to land in this position. But it is probably more psychological than anything else. It's a ritual between points to compose themselves and prepare for the next point.
