Robin... you were wonderful in "Good Will Hunting" but you were fantastic in the role of Dr. Malcolm Sayer (Oliver Sacks in real life). Your humanity doth shine forth like a star. When this amazing movie was over I sat stunned in my seat. I was affected so deeply by what I had seen that I wanted to share that feeling with everyone. The sad thing is that we rarely communicate anything deep with someone unless they are sitting next to us in the theater.
I will die on the hill on this, my humble opinion, the Oscar for Good Will Hunting was a “oops, sorry we missed you at the last one”. For me it’s glaringly obvious that this is the Oscar worthy performance. Am I wrong??
@@comoyoko "Die on the hill.."? Great expression. So Biblical. Got to remember it. Yes, the Academy's voting members are humans, not robots, so it is possible that what you suggest happened. Doctor Sayer is portrayed as emotionally vulnerable, maybe even handicapped in that way. In playing him Robin Williams showed great nuance. Always being asked to step outside his comfort zone by the circumstances that required courage. I always think of Whoopi Goldberg winning an Oscar for playing Oda Mae Brown in "Ghost" after being passed over for Celie in "The Color Purple." The role of Celie was an infinitely more dramatic accomplishment. I thought Oda Mae was a caricature of a black woman.
What a great and emotional movie, done by two legendary actors. This film was said to be Williams top favourite film he enjoyed being apart of, same thing for De Niro. The film literally touches your heart, and teaches you the value of life and how many people take it for granted. God bless Williams and Oliver Sacks. Two heros in a better place now. It's also amazing how Williams a few years later would battle a similar brain trauma/disease. Theres no words that can fully describe this movie. Astonishing. I could say the part that hit me the most was when Leonard had said he couldn't read anymore, and how he told his lover that it was his final time seeing her, like holy there is so much that could be said about the film, just you can't describe it, you can only see the film for yourself. God bless Williams, Sacks and all those patients who had suffered, and battled. Legends. Such an under-rated film. 7.27.2020
This movie is so moving and so upsetting and so brilliant....my two favourites in the same movie....I have to be careful when I watch it as I was ill the second time I watched because it upset me so much
Live life in the moment and be happy because no one can ever take those moments from you. “You told him I was a kind man. How kind is it to give life, only to take it away?” “It's given to and taken away from all of us.” “Why does that not comfort me?” “Because you are a kind man. Because he's your friend”
At one point a film Steven Spielberg considered directing, before passing it on to Penny Marshall. The time he spent on the project did yield one useful outcome for him: Steven Zaillian's script took several short chapters, each about different patients, and put them together into a linear whole. This brought Zaillian to Spielberg's attention, and he offered Zaillian the similar task of adapting Schindler's List 1993, which ended up winning Oscars for both of them
+Vegeta -- Steven did a brilliant job. I had the privilege of meeting him one day at the Farmers Market on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles. My friend Cathy, a second assistant director, and Zaillian were having a conversation about Penny Marshall's style of directing the movie. Apparently she missed capturing some of the nuances of the script.
The fact that a biochemical basis for the patients' condition was discovered was the one good thing that was learned. And, a new direction to research as a result, instead of people just suddenly shutting down, slowly breaking down and dying like all those before them without a clue as to why.
The human spirit is the most powerful force in the world. Because it encompasses our fears, desires, will to belong and will to survive. The human spirit should be nourished
I saw this movie. So in the end, Leonard went back to being brain dead? When he was actually functioning THAT was his awakening. Him awake from his 30 year coma. Then at the end he slowly went BACK INTO his coma?
The cocktail he made for them stopped helping for whatever reason and the awakening was them being in comas and having medical conditions and getting to experience that being awake be it as short as it may have been. Thats what I always thought
Although I myself would NEVER suggest Hollywood to anyone(let alone children), I must still say, Daniel Radcliffe could very well play Robin Williams. I avoided his Harry Potter movies because of my belief in The Holy GOD of The Bible, but his work AFTER that has been incredible.
This movie so under appreciated
Yes me too
Makes me cry but it is fantastic
Glad it never became a box office hit. It stands the test of time and had retained all of it’s beauty, charm and life affirming messages.
Not by me my friend
I have always thought that this was Robin's best role....
This is definitely in the top 5 of his performances. My favorite performance is his role in "Patch Adams."
Me too. This is way better than Good Will Hunting, and a second close to Dead Poets Society.
Definately!
100% agree
How about his other famous roles like Aladdin , Mrs Doubtfire , Jumanji , night at the museum and Hook which those are some of his other great movies
3:10 the smile that breaks out on her face as he asks her to get coffee together, a simple moment in a movie that really gets into your heart...
Actually, she understands it some seconds before his request, with marvelous female intuition...
"That the human spirit is more powerful than any drug and that is what needs to be nourished"

The last few seconds of this clip filled me with joy as if I were still 35 when I am more than twice as much. Simply tender
This scene still hurts. This movie is so good.
Robin had the sweetest smile in Hollywood.

The nicest smile in Hollywood. RIP Robin you are so still missed

This movie made me cry so much, I loved this movie.
I know it's silly to suggest but I wish this movie was required viewing for all high school students.
I don't think this movie gets talked about enough.
it is profoundly moving.
I wished robin genuinely understood we loved his acting and “him” he was wonderfully kind
this is still the best movie I've ever seen
Lol
What a movie. Everyone in it were so good. Penny Marshall always knew how to make great movies that make you laugh and cry.

I consider Awakenings to be her best movie she directed
@@theamazingandtalentedblake8296 I still have A League of their Own as my favorite of hers

this movie is so underrated. an absolute classic
We lost Robin too early. I watched this film countless times since 90s.
I was happy he finally asked out Marge Simpson for a cup of coffee😂
Such movies are hard to come these days.
Recently I think we cannot find this kinds of good movie
The fact that a biochemical basis for the patients' condition was discovered was the one good thing that was learned. And, a new direction to research as a result, instead of people just suddenly shutting down, slowly breaking down and dying like all those before them without a clue as to why.
Awakenings is the essence of innocence
Nice words
Made me smile. He just made her day. And his as well :)
Loved how she started to smile as he was finding his words.
I know Shawshank Redemption is an outstanding film, but this one managed to steal my heart from S.R.
The audience was so quiet you could hear a pin drop in the theater 1990 1991
Who else misses Robin Williams? Makes me kind of sad watching this.
The Simplest Things are overlooked in helping patients obtain them, as well as for healthcare workers. Care for the Caregiver should come first.
Robin didn't want to end up like this. So sad.
His health problems where going to have him end up like this? My goodness may he rest in peace.

What a profound compliment to the filmmakers.
Great movie. I own it on DVD. Wonderful acting.
