I watched this episode live way back in 2006, it was hugely hyped and shocking, and everyone showed Michael love and respect. The whole thing is on RUclips last I checked, just search, "smap michael jackson" and look for a 40ish minute long one. His appearance was planned and prefaced with SMAP, the longtime boy band, doing a usual filming of a musical number, only to be told the director interrupted it. They keep asking who and why and Michael appears by surprise and this was their reaction.
This was just after he was proven innocent in court and the whole episode, if not most of it, is on RUclips. This was the biggest variety show in Japan and they literally thought an impersonator was messing with them during filming.
Some of them look less japanese than I do, and I'm 1/2 japanese. They keep repeating his name. Who does he look like? Eddie Murphy? Geeze. I know he was in disbelief, but geeze!
