  • Heading south on the Charles Parker and Lance Redman memorial special we see a number of shots of 1275 between Te Kuiti and Taumaranui.
Then in fading light she attacks the Kakahi Bank before with fire flashing and heading cutting a blaze into the gloom she struggles up The Spiral and then storms through Pokaka and away, Into the Night.

I love this engine, what a fortunate coincidence, that it was judged uneconomic to repair to give joy to many later in life

This train was in Whangarei over Easter 2018 doing trips to Portland and kauri. Every trip was booked out. Very enjoyable.A BIG THANKYOU to all the people who keep these trains up and running.

Mate totally killed the night shots!!! Best I've ever seen; big ups!!! The shot from about 7:00 is perfect. Have had to replay that several times :D
Guessing the firebox flashing seen (particularly strong around 8:38 is from the grate / vents under the box?
As an aside I'm looking at buying Canon gear to shoot low light stills in the near future. What body were you using here? Thx

Thanks Bryce, glad you enjoyed that, is something pretty special about watching trains at night. What is also great up on The Spiral is that you hear the engine working all the way up the valley to Raurimu, is just magic (if you are a train geek that is). Another night shot taken in same spot back in 2008 at the end of this video, was recorded on Super 8 so not such good video but the atmosphere and sound with two engines working is great.

This was recorded on a Canon 70D, does not actually have the same gain as some dedicated video cameras but in some ways is more realistic of the actual light conditions. Also find you have to go to manual focus on it as there is not enough light for the camera to focus on.

Thanks for the link; loved the Super 8 too. Stuff happens at night that never happens in the day; so worth working to capture it. Good on you for going out, doing that and working on your craft :D
Thanks for the 70D tip. I'll check it out :)

Great footage! The night shots were particularly impressive. Something not right with that loco, a "J" used to pull a hell of a lot more than half a dozen carriages up "The Spiral" in steam days. Hope they get it sorted, because in it's current condition it couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

struck2soon many rumors have been said as to why. bad fireman bad oil etc

bradlz hill I think this is the second video I have seen of this loco having steam issues...perhaps burning waste oil is not that clever after all?

struck2soon yeah true that. although the ka I believe goes OK on waste oil. don't quote me on that though not sure

Struck2soon, I think you are getting confused with issues they had with 1236, 1275 actually went pretty well as you can see on this video and also on the video I posted of her leaving Ohakune on return trip. Yes was struggling on the top of the spiral but you do hear her getting into her work as she heads away from the Cinder Bank. I don't want to be disrespectful to the crew but the struggle on the spiral may well be due to firing, remember that these guys do not get to work loco's on a climb like this normally, in steam days guys would have be working over this track on a daily basis and so they would soon learn how to get the best out of an engine. Glad you enjoyed video.

Pardon me if this is a stupid question, In the night scenes is the flashing light under the engine from the fire box or is it static electricity? Fantastic video. I really enjoyed it.

Joe, the flashing you can see if from the fire box, this Ja is an oil burner and they tend to flash like this when they are firing hard, is quite spectacular. Glad you enjoyed the video.
