"Still Of The Night" was released in 1987 on Whitesnake's hugely successful self-titled album and quickly became THE signature hard rock song for Whitesnake.
Co-written by lead singer David Coverdale and guitarist John Sykes, it is a classic example of 80's hard rock at it's peak.
"Still Of The Night" is quite unusual in how it is laid out. There are many different guitar rhythms and sections to learn. Besides the HUGE main riff that is instantly recognizable, you will also learn the complete solo, rhythms and interlude section.
I have even arranged the string section part for guitar just to make sure you don't get any break at all. 🙂 .
I hope you enjoy this one. It is a lot of fun to play and is a great study in 80's rock guitar techniques. Good luck!!
    Carl

this is amazing!!! Kids today have absolutely no excuse to not know how to play guitar. (old man voice)BACK IN MY DAY YOU JUST HAD TO GUESS WHAT THE GEETARRR PLAYER WAS DOING!!!

Jeff Roth It’s like that with anything music related today. Remember having to get your “music news” from magazines like Hit Parader and Circus magazine? There is something to be said for learning a song by constantly hitting rewind on a cassette tape or back on a CD, it taught you how to play by ear. Once you did it a hundred times you could tell by listening to a new song where they where on the fretboard or what chord they where playing. You had to actually work for it to get better. I’m not saying it’s any easier to learn a guitar today then it was a few decades ago but it’s easier to find tabs or instructional videos thanks to RUclips and apps like Songsterr and Ultimate Guitar.

But that 'guessing things' create many guitar gods own style.

Are you kidding me Jeff Roth. I’ve been trying to do this for a week. This song is intermediate to advanced. Of course this guy can play it he’s a guitar teacher and obviously been playing for many years. Not so easy for some of us.

It's amazing to see just how simple the main riff actually is. Once you get it right at a slow speed, all you have to do is play it at the right speed. Well, that's the way I usually learn riffs and stuff.

I’ve been playing guitar since 12. I only dropped out because my teacher was teaching me in Spanish. Now as adult I realize how naïve it was on my part. I lost the opportunity of learning from a great teacher.
Back in the day there was no RUclips and the Internet was slow thanks to net zero. Technology has changed a game. Kids within two years are mastering Bohemian Rhapsody. Still the older generation earned their stripes through trials and tribulations. Nothing but passion sweat and tears. Fantastic video.

Nice tutorial. Thanks. It cleared up a few nuances for me. But for those wanting to really nail that main blues riff, there is one thing Carl missed: when the B-C-C# chromatic precedes it, the usual first note (B on the 5th string, 2nd fret) is not used. Instead strike the middle E first (4th string, 2nd fret). Then do as Carl said for the other times (starting on the 5th string B). It's a small thing, and easy to miss for sure (I did it wrong forever myself). But when you do it this way and get used to it, then it becomes easy to hear on the recording -- and it's even cooler imo.
