Oh man, I'm so guilty of going after the smaller sets and then getting trapped in the inside. Really practical advice, thanks Johnny!

and NZ old school bloke once told me here in Bali surfing some bigger swell that the key is to keep smiling and loving being in it. And that alone calms your whole body even when in the shit. that knowledge has helped me so much and it works to stay collected

Brilliant! First of all: when in doubt, don't go out(1). This must occur once at the minimum. If you have no fear, then big waves aren't a problem for you. If you paddle out and make it, this could be a good sign (2). Now you must commit to the drop(3). Hesitating is no big deal, but when you go, throw and send it in full! Execute the moves necessary, then you should make it. Repeat, again and step up your game.

Great advices! I am afraid to surf bigger waves. 3 to 4 ft is my comfort zone.

Brilliant video, I'm right at that point where I want to start surfing bigger waves and you addressed a lot of the physical and psychological things I've been thinking about. Really great, thanks, yeah super useful...

I can remember going out on my first few double over head waves just how sketchy and surprising the sets can be and then just going on a rag doll experience but actually surfing those waves takes balls to anyone who actually goes out in them.

Great video, this is where I'm at. My break has some peelers, but mostly close outs, and steep. I've struggled cause my pop up is too slow. I now practice a lot at home. I only get out every week or so. The good news is there is always plenty of action on the inside to work on pop up. Out the back in a few weeks more practice.

Really great video and pointers to keep in mind. I don't get many big days where I live but I want to start surfing more than knee high stuff. I've been trying but it's tough to learn. Thanks for the positive attitude and great tips!!

my teacher saw that i could easily surf small waves and one day he took me to some 1,5m waves and told me to go straight forward, i took only 1 wave but the other ones i failed helped me understant that they are not that scary and difficult
