I recently received a Vintage Modified Jaguar bass from Fender to review. I thought it would be fun to video tape myself unpacking the bass and playing it right out of the box, no set up, just straight from the factory. It's a great bass and definitely gig ready right out of the box. I will be posting a more in depth review soon.
the way this guy moves his body is so fast and fluid.
Here I am, 5 years later, going back to a Jag bass...in fact this exact model.
And after years of some strange basses, I have to say it's a joy to play.
I've got one of these three years ago for Christmas. I feel in love with it when I first played it :D
I would never imagined that Bass sounded that good!
You dont know anything about music , get lost
mr3starsandthesun It must be your troll day, hey?
Most of the tone comes from the fingers, but this bass actually responds pretty well!! For the price looks unbeatable...
Thank you for the quick response. I'm really considering this bass. Your video reviews are very informative. Keep up the good work.
Excellent playing and review of a great bass. I have one. Mine is the modified special HB.
@Bo Hulsey Glad the video helped!! You're going to love the bass!! Thanks again!!
Thank you caesarbass, I was unsure about this one before, its sold now. Can't wait!
I was just playing one of those yesterday at GC and really liked it. Thanks for all the great vids
@MrRicheed Thanks soooo much!!! The scale length is standard 34" or long scale. I haven't tried the ESP but they do make really good instruments for the money. My money is still on the fender Squiers, really consistent construction and great tone out of the box.
Hope this helps!!
@QeenoyAsli Hi Queeno!! I definitely should specify that the set up was not perfect, but definitely acceptable, at least this one was OK right out of the box. I adjusted the pick up height and gave the neck and saddles an adjustment to suite my style better too. I'm still very impressed with the quality and ease of adjustment with these basses for the price. Thanks for checking out the video!!
@SoundWavesSurfer Thanks!! I dig this little set up!!!
@MrNoodle718 I actually find it pretty easy. The volume knob closer to the neck is the vol and tone for the neck pickup and the other knob is for the bridge pickup. As far as for the tone knobs, they have hard clicks, so i just turn the tone control all the way up or down then count clicks up or down. It's a pretty cool set up.
@CABINFEVERibk
Squier made a short scale version of the jaguar bass.
It's called "Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass Special SS (short scale)"
This is a nice bass. I upgraded mine with a Badass Bass II Bridge, a bone nut, and a set of EMG PJ HZ pick ups, may swap the tuning machines with something else too.
hipshots man, they line up with the screw holes from the shitty squire tuners, and are much better. maybe get the Xtender tuner on the E as well.
I wound up just getting some Grover tuners. They did not line up perfectly, but I took it to the luthier here, and he put them on. Much better. I think I put more money into fixing it up, than I did when I bought the bass.
@TommyW222 Hey Tommy, they are actually stacked knobs. vol/tone for each pickup. If you Google Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar you'll see tons of pics. Hope this helps.
quite set correctly. And the neck has a couple of little dints in it. The pickgaurd also lifted when I first got it, and recently. I fixed it with a couple of turns with a screw driver. But what do you expect for a £250 bass. It's fantastic and I recommend the VM series to anyone, as long as your willing to deal with the little problems, it really is a fantastic bass for the price!
NICE BASS!!! I have been considering this bass for a while....
@dankwarth From left to right in the background: Low End Jazz bass 5, Elrick fretless 5, Squier VM Jazz.
wow I figured it would be versatile but this is awesome
@RecklessPollution Thanks sooooo much!! I really appreciate it!! I will think about doing a slap tutorial....I'm really concentrating on gear but might try something new...haha!! Thanks again!!
@CABINFEVERibk Haha!! Thanks!! You are too kind!!! Appreciate it and thanks foe checking out the vids!!!!
@SomosFoster Definitely as comfortable, but it is different. There's less horn on the bottom so when you're sitting it sits differently on your leg. Both super comfy.
@mortuary3 Thanks!! Yes that was a Boss RC-2 looper, I now just use the tracks in Logic Audio for backing tracks. You'll be super happy with this bass!!
@dLnFr757 its a jaguar bass (note the shape of the body) with a precision pickup in the front and the jazz pickup near the bridge
@PDExplorer193 I really dig the looks of the P/J too. I played a humbucker Jag at a GC and it was great also. I say if you don't have a P-bass get the P/J config, at least that way you can emulate a P-bass....sort of....
Very versatile bass!!! Thanks guys!!!
Nice. I imagine they double checked the one they were sending out to you though, made sure it was set up real nice and all. I got a VM Jazz last year (your vid on that was really helpful) and it needed a bit of setting up, I still want to get the frets done on it aswell, maybe I'm just picky though.
@stabwithknife15 No worries about the name..although its a little scary!! Lol!! Thanks and I'm glad you like the video!!!
@Caleb5617 Actually there are now four different Squier Jaguar bass models, this one is the "regular" model which runs about $300, there are two "Specials", one for $200 with an active bass boost, and one with a single bridge humbucker pickup. Finally, there is now a "Short Scale" one with a shorter neck that runs about $150. They are all very nice for the money, but this one is the nicest, with stacked knobs and black inlays.
@ozzie321 No!! Thanks for watching!!!
I checked this bass out today, right out of the box, at Axe music in Edmonton, AB. I was hoping that it was going to be my dream bass. I wasn't disappointed, but nor was I freaking out at the glory of this instrument. The out of the box action was high, and Axe kindly adjusted it. My initial thoughts were, it is too light, I always worry about "light", the click click 10 point adjustments were awkward to me, the overall was 6 of 10. Gonna wait for the new, less funky but less expensive release.
My friend. You are a killer bassist.
@vince spencer I tuned using a Korg Pitch Black tuner. I definitely would recommend it for a beginner!!
@eanoDay91 Congrats on the new bass!! I'd love to get my hands on a U.S Jaguar, there's definitely a reason Pino plays one when he's not playing his old P-basses!!!
Thanks!!!
Awesome playing man and a nice looking bass, i was looking at the peavey zodiak and this,tough choice
thanks...and yes i've got a RC-2 as well and use it basically the same way.
@piscesman54 Glad the video helped!! Thanks!! I agree 100% about a PJ being bad ass!! Best of both worlds with a twist!!
@Awful0ne You heard correct!! Two volumes with tone for each pickup. Pretty killer sounding bass!!!
Awesome playing👍🏼 goes to show you don’t need a $10,000 bass to sound good!
love that amp set up you got, im currently running a gk 700rbii and gk neo 2x12. but im thinking about getting a little mark 3
Cool review, I want to try the Jaguar short scale though, got enough long scale basses.
@fernandochristian28 There are actually two different models, the special is $199, this one (with the fancy pickguard) is $299.
Really Good Condition... Wow. It's New...
I was seriously contemplating one of these to have around the house
but then the new new Jaguar basses got announced (Special and HB) ... oh the humanity
@BASSMAN MARINO Yes, it has the stock Duncan pickups.
this is a freaking brilliant overview, thank you for putting this up. Did you ever try to cha...OMG IS THAT AN ORANGE LAKLAND!?!?
Hmm...It sounds pretty good. Though, compared with my Fender version, It seems to have not as much lows, but it's punchy as hell. It also sounds articulate with lots of great midrange. That has to sit extremely well in mixes. I can't wait to try one of these at a store. Great review also, I wish Tony Franklin sent me new basses. Lol.
@leira1996 I definitley recommend the Jaguar!! It's super versatile!! It's a "P" or a "P-J" or a "J"!!!! I'm really digging the tone controls too!!!
no..thank you. Your review help me decide to switch and glad I did. Put a set DR Black Beauties (my string of choice for everything I have) and it's rockin'.
Sounds great. Have a question for you given the choice between the Vintage Modified Jag or a Jazz which one would you choose?
Two of my comments have been deleted. Anyway my Squier Jaguar Bass (LS same in the video) electronics have failed 3 times. The paint right next to the neck chipped off when I dropped it. Anyway this hasn't stopped me from liking my Jag. Infact I like it so much I decided to buy another Squier Vintage Modified.
The second VM I bought was an Olympic White Precision bass. It's very light. Again there is a problem, but its nothing to big. The chrome on the hardware especially the bridge haven't --
YES! that is EXACTLY what I thought too! incredible how much he reminds me of Tom Morello.
i do dig it. duncans make all the diff.
@CABINFEVERibk
Epiphone and Gibson make lovely Short-scale SG basses. Look up the EB-0 and the EB-3, both of them are "30 scale length as opposed to "34 for most basses out there, Ibanez also makes the Mikro, it's something like "28.6, I think.
I love the stacked knobs
Nice. Amazing player !
@intehbut it is SquiER vintage modified Jaguar bass
@ccw93n1516 Yes. You can look at it as a bass with P/J, Precision/Jazz, bass pickups.
I've got a vintage modified Jazz bass, but I'm sure my experience with it will be the same with this one as the specs are the same.
These basses sound incredible. Amazing 70's tones for slap, funk, disco, rock, metal, HECK anything! They have slightly less punch than the 60's Fender models, but when set up (they don't need much, just a little tightening on the truss rod and action adjustment) they play FAR better than most of the USA Standard Fender basses I've played.
Seriously recommended!
Great bass, bro
Sweet..Squier Vm guitars worthy for sure !!
@fredolee16 Hi fredolee!! My advice would be...if you have a P bass already get the Jazz bass, if you don't get the Jaguar so at least that way you will have a P bass in your collection. In reality you can't go wrong with either bass...I'm actually bummed I have to give back the Jaguar!! Haha!!! Thanks for checking out the video bro!!
@DodGe111594 Definitely a thinner style neck. very close to, if not exactly like the VM Jazz bass.
I like this bass and would mainly be playing country music, but of course some oldies mixed in too. Thats why I like the P & J pickups. I'm concerned about the agathis body though. Do you think it holds back the sound a little? I was really wanting a body with more density.
@xgcbossman I think the bass is excellent for any style. I also used this bass on the REDDI demo and it sounds killer!!!
@emmaandnilla I believe you can find them new for about 200-250 U.S.
@SWAMPskate I think it would be fine...you should go to a music store that has one and try it just in case....
Brits do say Jag-u-er which is incorrect. I was born in Coventry up the street from where they built the cars. American pronunciation is closer to how people in the Amazon talk about their Jag-wah cat
those cars are british. we can call them what we want. oh, and our teeth are perfectly straight.
The Amazonian pronunciation is yaguareté
I know how good the VM series are, I own a 70's JB. You think you got a great set up since they know you will be reviewing the bass? I had to get mine set up. I had some fret buzz on mine.
@IwannaBEamerican No, just straight into my mark Bass Head then in to the Aguilar cabinet. Unfortunately this was when I wasn't recording the audio separately. This bass sounds really great recorded.
@novanine9 Absolutely!! This bass really does both the P and the J thing!! The P bass pick up soloed sounds like a true P to my ears!!
@Falconclaws Hi Falcon, I would for sure get the Jaguar if you don't have a P bass and if you do have a P bass then get the VM Jazz. You can't go wrong with either bass!!!
looked at one these a few months back but picked up a '77 VM jazz as a back-up for my 70's VMJ, but am trading the '77 vmj back in for one of these jags next week. nice review and is that a Boss RC-2 your using for drum tracks?
Cool bass. Maybe I should get one too.
@robyn rotolo Couldn't agree with you more about GC basses set up really badly most of the time. This bass was sent to me and fortunately didn't
Ya know over this month I've been trying to decide this, vm jazz bass, or classic vibe jazz bass(could ya make a vid on that?) I can not decide between the three. I need a bass that has that good jazz tone but very versatile. Put that Strat bod on the jaguar and I'd be hooked. Gotta love block inlays
@breakkfastman1573 I freelance, play with a few band around town, and get hired to do some sessions here and there.
@jackiecarollo22 I say play both and whichever floats your boat go for it!!!
@koki41182 I really prefer the Squier. I think they are very well made.
Would be cool if they made a long scale version.
If you got this as a demo, it has been set up very well before you got it. Every fender i see at guitar center has no action at all. Fyi
@ChasePlaysBass1 Hi Chase, my advice would be if you don't have a precision bass get the Jaguar, it does the P-bass thing great!!
@robyn rotolo need much setting up. Although after the video I did some fine adjustments. I definitely got lucky out of the box.
That is one big bass!
@yellofury
I'm in the same boat but that black against the red guard is soooo sexy. I think the less expensive new "specials" look okay, but are not as sexy looking. As well, they have not been tried and tested. I have debated this for weeks but am probably going to go buy the version being tested here. It's just so great looking, sounds amazing from what I've heard in the youtube offerings, has the p and j, and...well, I could ramble more. I'll probably buy this sexy looking non-special.
@caesarbass Perfect! Thanks for replying, I'm going to buy it.
@Therzroomattheback Thanks man!! I think it's pretty funny!! I'm the one that gets to play these cool new instruments...pretty damn fun!!!
should I get the vintage modified jaguar or the vintage modified jazz bass? im not sure what to do...
Wow, I'm answering a lot of questions today. It's really just a matter of aesthetics, most squire basses are quite similar in sound (unless you're very picky). If you're a beginner it doesn't matter too much, if you're more advanced maybe get a fender. So whatever you prefer, I think the amps more important by the way.
I was left with this choice and I preferred the jaguar and ended up buying it in the end (I actually preferred the epiphone thunderbird to the squier vintage modified jazz bass, but the jaguar was just my preference and plays just about every genre pretty well)
Bayley McNamee Good choice. I've actually came to the realisation lately that Fender American standard guitars are much too expensive, looking at some of the telecasters and such. I own a squire affinity series strat that's half the price of a Fender, fit it out with some fairly decent pickups and you've just saved $200.
I was actually thinking of smacking some Seymour Duncan pickups in it :)
Bayley McNamee Sounds pretty sweet, the one thing I don't like about my squier is the bridge pickup is way too weak. I've been looking at some Lollar pickups but it's hard finding money, you know.
@trojancelis You are correct!!!
@x00xcarusox00x Usually right around the $300.00 U.S range.
@caesarbass Thanks for the reply Steve!!
@metalhead8754 Sure! I don't see why not!!
Which one should i take ? Vintage Modified Precision Bass, Vintage Modified Jazz 70's NT, Vintage Modified Jazz Bass '77, or Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass ?
cool bass man!
yeah man !!!
i want one xD
nice video man im thining of getting one now :)
SUBSCRIBED!!
Wait, you had this for days before opening it?
That's beautiful. How would you compare it to an American or MIM P-bass/J-bass or Jaguar Bass?
@polgardani Hey there!! Thanks for watching my video and for the critique!! I really appreciate all comments. I really recommend three things to you: 1) Use the fast forward button 2) Don't watch the video 3) Make your own videos that fit your criteria. I really don't want this to sound combative but there are plenty of other videos that would probably make you happier. I'm adding you as a friend too!! Thanks!!!
Is it Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass with P/J equal to Vintage Modified Jazz Bass combined with Vintage Modified Precision Bass?
