You can get rid of the detent clicks on the tone knob by undoing the grub screw with an allen key and taking the knob off and removing the washer with little arm that sticks out (I'm making this read so people that aren't so technically inclined can understand) and putting it all back together.

My first bass was a Cort short scale. I love short scale bass to death. When i started playing 28 years ago with a drummer and a shorty as the only instruments the bass had to stand in for the guitar. With a Boss distortion and tree tone Metal chords it did the job well. We made some pretty sick Punk/Metal sounds that way.

I bought the short scale bass. A friend of mine had a short scale bass and I loved it, although his was an Epiphone SG body style bass. I bought the Fender because I know Fender makes some good stuff, so I also bought the Fender Rumble 60 Watt 1x12 bass amp to go with it. I'm not a bassist but I'm learning how to play bass. I have 45 years experience on guitar though and the first four strings on guitar are the four strings on bass, unless of course you play a five string bass. The Squier Vintage Modified was right up my alley for doing home recording and such. Not really looking to play in a band, but just record some things.

this bass looks brilliant in real life.
i went to town a few days ago, looking for a p bass but as soon as i took a good look at the jaguar, i knew i had to get it.
i tried it out in the shop and it has a brilliant growl.
I am convinced that it can do pretty much anything; i saw a video of the jag bass doing some heavy stuff (it sounded brilliant) and obviously the p bass pickup is perfect for rock, and j bass pickup makes it a little jazzy.
i shall be buying this bass in roughly a month.

I just got a standard today. Love it. What's cool is that my local Guitar Center marked the price on it as $249.99 instead, so I got $50 off of it. It kinda has the best of both P basses and Jazz basses. Comfortable neck too. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble tightening one end of my Clip-Lock strap for some reason. Over all, nice bass. I'd recommend it for any bass player.

I use the Long scale one for about 6 months now.. I did some gigs and I can tell you all, this Bass is awesome ! I used it in E Tuning when I bought it, but Now I use some 5 string set of strings to tune it into C and its still awesome ! I recommend this one !

You can remove the clicks from the tone pots quite easily. Just take the spring washer out from underneath.

I have the 34 inch scale model. If you are looking for a small light weight instrument then note that both the 34 inch scale and short scale both are quite heavy. Another thing: Having 2 vol pots and 2 tone pots is not good in the sense that much signal vanishes in the pots. You get better tone if you set all to max and then use the tone-control on the amp (often you have better posibillity to control tone on the amp). Don't forget: What wood-spieces the bass is made of have no real influence on tone. So don't waste your money on expensive wood. And dont forget to play your instruments - they miss you!

+Jakob Lindekilde I have 2 SS Jags. Surprisingly, the one I left in standard tuning is much lighter than the one I strung BEAD. The BEAD one has much hotter pu's too. I have to turn down the volume when I switch. Not sure if it's because of the heavier strings, heavier body, or just inconsistant pu winding.

I have small hands, so the Short Scale would do me good, and -- for the most part -- that's what, or who -- the SS is designed for... or perhaps for those who prefer comfort.
But like J.W. said... I did read in a few reviews over at Amazon.com that the Squier Modifed SS Jaguar Bass pickups are sub-par, or "weak".

I actually did a jazz gig on the short scale version, and I really liked how maneuverable the neck was. What I did not like though, is that the intonation was total wack. When I would hit a sustained note, It would slightly out of tune... I like the bass, but would highly recommend a setup.

  • @David_Downs

I have this bass (full scale). I modded it with a Badass II bridge, some EMG PJhz pickups, and some Grover tuners, and it plays and sounds better. The factory set up was dreadful though, it took quite a few neck adjustments to get it working to par.

I own the full scale version. I believe only made in this configuration for 2011. Picked it up cheap as a trade in from guitar center. Way superior to short scale version and beautiful in person. Not a Pro but I havent upgraded anything on it and sounds great through my ORANGE Crush 50 combo with a MXR Bass preamp.

Looking for something as a slight step up from my ibanez gsr200fm. Never realized how thin the standard ceramic pickups on my bass sound, but compared with the duncan designed pickups on this vm model, im much more pleased. beefier bass, not to mention its a definite looker.
This Jaguar will be my next bass for sure

  • @ltdbassplayer

Short scales make transitioning from guitar to bass easier because the scaling (30"-31") reduces the distance between frets by about 10% -making short scales great for those with smaller hands and younger players. Other attributes of short scale basses include a punchier sound due to the shorter strings and slightly higher tension. However, intonation can be a pain (my Hagstrom HB-4 is so bad that I'll probably go back to long scale. That, and my muscle memory is tuned to long scale).

Nice review Jordan. I actually own 2 of the SS model. One tuned EADG & the other BEAD If you're going to try you're hand modding a guitar it might as well be cheap, right?? Great review. I can tell the difference in pickup quality with those SD. BTW, can you tell me the difference between SD pu's & SD "designed" pu's?
Also, I discovered a cheap "fix" in improving the sound. I bought a$30 Behringer Sansamp clone (you can tell I'm cheap!) and it really beefed up the sound. Has the same growl and sustain as the full-length Jag (at least). Someday I may also upgrade the pu's anyway though.

I have one active Jaguar, paid $174 at GC (less 10% off ) so far I like it a lot ,not complains, I use this bass with my new GK MB800 and a 4x10" speakers Carvin cabinet, maybe I'll change the pickups.
It's amazing that a bass guitar made in Indonesia cost $174 dlls ! If I have to pay just the bass guitar shipping cost (Indonesia to Ga. USA) it will be more than $300 dlls ! Well I hope the pickups won't give a problem later,or the neck etc.

They might be stock Squier pups on the short scale, but I like its sound a lot better than the full scale. I do like the look of the long scale better, tho.
Also, the SS bass sounded like it had flats or semi-flats on them, which might account for its lower end.

If that's a rosewood fingerboard on a maple neck, why is there a "skunk stripe" on the back? Usually you only see those on maple necks, where they have to route out the back to put the truss rod in. Rosewood fingerboards usually route out the top of the neck, then put the fingerboard on top.

    • @kirb.e1262

Not sure if this helps, I don’t know much about making fretboards but I’m pretty sure this is “indian laurel” wood not rosewood. I have a duo sonic guitar that’s pau ferro wood and it has the skunk stripe. Looks cool either way tho👌🏻

Squier is Fenders budget line, but these days the more expensive (Classic Vibe, Artist Series, and even the Vintage Modifieds, are giving most Fenders a run for their money, and imo most of the CV and Artist Squiers are as good, if not better than most fenders up until the $900-$1000 MSRP range. (I have 2 Fenders, a Mexican Classic Series Tele and a American Jazz Bass, and then 2 Squiers, a CV precision bass and a Artist Series J Mascis Jazzmaster)

Lacking pickups? Just crank the amp to eleven, ha ha!

I actually prefer low output pickups... once you get them to the same volume as "hotter" ones by increasing the volume (not gain) on the amp, they usually have a better sound (ymmv)

Frankly, I don't know why anyone would want more high-end in a bass. A deeper low-end tone is more in keeping with what a bass is for, in the first place.

    • @richardledger6912
      @richardledger6912 6 лет назад

GaryR55 totally depends what you want. I use a very messed up fuzzed out sound with a ton of overtones in one of my bands, I need a lot of high end to achieve this sound. If you just want bass in your sound go buy an upright. :)

Different genres get complimented with different sounds. In a lot of metal, the high frequencies give the bass a more literal metallic sound. I love it. Very bright and glassy. If also gives you a little more definition instead of just producing a bunch of muddy notes that can get lost in the background. Then you have bands like Primus where the bass is actually more of the focus points rather than the guitar. It all comes down dot personal preference and also what kind of sound your band wants.

No, it does not. If you try to play a Rage Against The Machine song on it, it will magically blow up in your hands and Tim Commerford will send you nasty letters for the rest of your natural life.

Where on God's green earth can I find that first bass??? :(
I've searched literally all of Fender's vendors listed on their website and the very few that have this bass listed say it's out of stock :\ Yet, the short scale and all of the other Jag basses in the Vintage Modified series are available.

Jirue7609 Its perfect thanks, but i don't think it ships to the Uk which sucks (and if it does it will be very expensive)
