Love the little guy. When I was young, my mom was dating a zoo keeper. I got to play with many of the baby animals, the baby elephant was one of my favorites. So affectionate, she never wanted me to leave and would cling to me and cry when it was time to go. Samantha was her name. I went back to that zoo when I was a teenager. Samantha remembered me and came running to the edge of the enclosure to greet me. We could almost touch but shortly out of reach. She could smell me and she whined when she did. New zoo keeper was not empathetic and wouldn't let me touch her. I never went back again. I hated to see Samantha cry.
To be fair, the new zookeeper didn't know you. I am not saying you're lying here but if you were a member of the public, and I was a zookeeper, I would be looking out for the welfare of the animals and everyone's safety. You don't know what members of the public may be up to; they could even startle the animal which leads to havoc or injury and then the zoo keeper may be blamed and lose his job.

Where is greenery, fruits and water for these little ones and their mothers. This cutie is playing but mother is sad. God bless and protect all the innocent animals on this planet !
While I am very glad that the baby is healthy, I absolutely hate seeing him and his mom in a zoo. Compare that with the Jubalani sanctuary where the ellie go out into the bush everyday, go swimming, forage to their hearts content and come back at night to a protected area. It's a world of difference.
Sheer joy. Until he grows up and all his instincts tell him he belongs in a roaming herd, but he's stuck in that small enclosure for the rest of his natural life.
Love the way this baby knocks himself against mum, as if to make sure she gives him enough attention...... 😅 As if she needed reminding!!! 😂 Bless them with a happy life❤

A little sweetie that's going to grow up into an enormous bull elephant one day, who would naturally have left his herd at around 13 or 14 yrs old, where he would either have wandered around alone or joined a bachelor herd, and walked miles every day, feeding up to 20 hours a day. The thought of this little baby spending 50+ years in an 'enclosure' is utterly heartbreaking. And no, zoos are not necessary to 'protect' species, nor to do 'research' on them. Would you like to be locked up in a room for 50+ yrs so that nothing bad ever happens to you? As for research, there are Amazing research scientists these days who work in the wild with the animals. Observing them in a natural environment makes far more sense than doing so in an unnatural environment like a zoo. We don't need zoos or marine parks anymore to 'research' wild animals.

Glad to be able to say that these elephants are no worse off if they had been in a sanctuary. There's lots of enrichment, they have a great pool, their indoor accomodation, is the same as the outdoor accomodation it just has a wall and a roof, no concrete just sand.
