A mother gray whale lifted up her calf, seemingly to help it get a better view of the excited onlookers, and we caught it all on camera.
For in-depth information on the whales of San Ignacio and regulations of the area, see our blog post at www.oneworldoneocean.org/blog/...
The gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon frequently approach small tourist boats, seeking the human interaction. While they could easily avoid the people, whose small boats are not allowed to closely approach whales, they actually seem to enjoy making contact.
Laguna San Ignacio is on the Pacific coast of Mexico's Baja peninsula and is the destination for hundreds of gray whales, who migrate annually to the region from their feeding grounds in the Arctic. Here, where the water is shallow and warm, they give birth to their young. It lies within El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and is the gray whale's last undisturbed nursing and breeding ground, largely thanks to an environmental victory in 2000 that stopped the development of an industrial salt plant.
Whale watching here is highly regulated, with limits on how many boats can be on the water, how long they can stay, and how close they can get; rather than closely approaching the whales, they must idle their engine and wait for the whales to approach the vessel, which is a common occurrence.

Your comment is straight FACTS. It’s so annoying how little brain cells the majority of the population has left!
I watched a video of two great whites attacking the same surfer at once, one of the sharks in his frenzy knocked the surfer out of the water and cause of that the surfer was able to escape... well 🤣 go to comment section and half of the comments are brainless people saying how “AMAZING” it was that the shark saved this surfer from his buddy(who was on opposite side of the dude gnawing on his arm) and how sharks are “seriously misunderstood” because they don’t view us as prey nor do they like the way we taste. Huh?! Don’t like the way we taste?? How do you know that-did a shark tell you that?! I just shake my head and giggle..
I was dumbfounded at the stupidity of the majority of the comments. These people really thought that other shark was trying to save the human when in fact it was trying to bite his shoulder.
Sometimes if I’m in a bad mood, I come here to read comments and feel better about my life 😂

A mother humpback came close to the shore & pushed her baby up. The little whale opened it's mouth to show its baleen. The mother turned on her side so her huge eye was looking at us. These people are way too close. The whales could get stressed or injured by the boats, The dislikes are because these people do not respect safety distances and disturb wild animals that should be left undisturbed, which is a pretty egoistic move imo. I made this trip two years ago and it was just like that! The experience is truly incredible and I recommend it highly. It's important to remember that the boats are only allowed into a small portion of the lagoon, so that the whales have plenty of area to retreat to if they want to be alone. They voluntarily approach the boats to socialize, and no one can explain why! It's especially astounding when you realize that not so many years ago, whalers were slaughtering whales in those very lagoons.

I just read through the comments and I hardly ever comment on youtube, but I was thinking if I was the only one who was annoyed by the woman and of course as it is on youtube... people express their opinion in a very cold way. I was thinking that this is exactly where everything starts: being unaware and not sensitive enough to feel the situation. Yes she's just screaming because she's excited to see those animals and to be able to touch them, there is no reason to be having to express yourself in such a way "this **** should stfu" etc. etc. Really ?
Sensitivity and awareness is all we need.
Just like this woman and the people who start wasting their energy by getting so mad that they have to write things like that.

And its not like she was filming it specifically for RUclips. Was scrolling the comments to see what other people thought of this awesome encounter and all there was is endless complaints of the screaming. Really people? That's all you got out of the video?

@@NB-bj6bf in the Baja Peninsula, the gray whales are known for seeking out these encounters with the small boats. They seem to thrive off the encounters as much as the people do, as is evidenced by the behavior of the mother whale. The encounters have been in the thousands, and so far as I can recall, I believe there may have been maybe one instance where the mother had become upset, and I think it may have been because the boat came between the mother and the calf. Otherwise, the whales seem to understand the exuberance expressed by the people. Hence this mother has deliberately brought her baby to them in order to show off her calf!
