Just as some of the greatest athletes in the world use coaches to train, improve, and be the best, SmartDrive provides tools to assist carriers around the nation in improving driver habits and skills, reducing collision frequency, and optimizing operational performance.
Chris Josten, Estherville, IA terminal manager at Heyl Truck Lines, explains how SmartDrive cameras work.
SmartDrive cameras are triggered by events such as hard breaks, erratic lane changes, and collisions. They also provide a manual trigger that can be created by the driver, as well as a “private mode” feature. SmartDrive does NOT allow the company to manually trigger video in ANY truck.

This is the dumbest fucking thing someone came up with and convinced a safety director it was a good idea to have an inward facing camera. And the industry wonders why they can't hold onto drivers. It's not the drivers, it's the unrealistic expectations of trucking companies and dispatchers that don't realize that a driver who shows 10 hours off duty, may be on the side of the road, and by the way, drivers spend almost 24 hours at their workplace. They sleep there, eat there, work there. Now they want to have cameras watching the driver. Good luck with that.
They absolutely suck.It’s a Driver distraction itself constantly causing a driver to worry if it’s triggering and uploading during driving conditions instead of being able to fully focus on surroundings and conditions.Helps seedy management micromanage drivers to the point of harassment.

i work for a parts store that has this system in the vehicles ive already got flagged multiple times for the dumbest of reasons because of the fucking management. its gotten to the point my anxiety is through the roof when im driving those damn vehicles. Like how do expect me to drive safely and with confidence if im constantly worried about every little gd thing?
Thankfully there's still plenty of companies out there that respect you enough as a driver to not have these.
I don’t mind the outward facing cameras but I dont agree with the camera facing the driver.

Amazon used these in their fleet. They use g force events as "coaching". However, these cameras go off all the time and management uses these videos to discipline the drivers. No wonder Amazon's driver turnover is so high.
I just start driving semi truck for amazon. Yes it takes discipline to drive with smart drive. Just today I was coming down the hwy and the collision mitigation light flashed. Nothing in front of me, no sudden braking,no swerve. Odd it went off right after I reached to turn my A/C on...🤔
These systems are afraid of its own shadow, and locks the breaks for invisible events! REAL SAFE!
Inward facing cameras should be the driver choice
There's nothing there that an outward facing camera wouldn't also verify. Put all the outward facing cameras you want on the truck but not the inside.
I wonder do you also have cameras in the trailer to monitor the people that are loading and unloading your trailer?
This is some garbage, tonight’s my first night with this system, two cameras pointed at my face, I set it off about ten times, In a bumpy driveway, looking at paper directions and then randomly kept going off not speeding not swerving not being wreckless this is controlling garbage. Outward camera fine, inside is a violation of our rights we need to stand up against this, they have no business hearing me talk to my wife. Total bullshit
Glad I came across this nope I don't work for companies that have driver facing cameras that's going a bit to far.
this sounds like a you problem!!! if you are more concerned about what it is the camera see's then you are the problem. i have a smartdrive system in my work truck, i also have 5 different cameras hooked up to that smart drive system. i have had events happen because i braked too hard because i was about to miss my turn, i changed lanes, after being flashed with high beams that i could safely move over, i have had speeding events, ect. i have use the smart drive reports to adjust how i am driving in my company vehicle...
i know i can do at least 4 miles over the the speed limit and get away with it, i know i can change lanes at a gradual pace, i know i can follow vehicles at such a distance, i know i can accelerate and decelerate and specific rates and still set a trigger event that causes me no problems.
if you have a problem with this system get a job that doesn't require driving cause most driving jobs, unless it is your personal vehicle that would require, at minimum, 100,000 dollars of insurance to cover your personal vehicle and yourself, along with uninsured parties, then you will have a form of smartdrive system installed. why do you think hundreds of thousands of people use dash cams now????

Current oilfield company I work for uses a similar camera system to “help” the drivers. We had a guy out of our yard involved in a crash when a car ran a red light and the company refused to release the footage to help fight the case. Stay on your toes when the companies say it’s to protect you
Its not to protect you, it's for liability reasons and to protect the companies wallet.
Nothing in those events that a simple dashcam couldn't have recorded. All a driver cam would have done was video someone in an embarrassing moment yelling at the windshield about the stupid 4 wheeler.
I use a dashcam in my car, but I don't need to buy a second one to point at me to prove the forward dashcam isn't lying.
this system is designed and used to determine what a company worker is doing during the triggered event of the camera system. if the driver is at fault for not looking straight forward, or for not checking all mirrors, then the company driver can be determined at fault if an accident where to happen. this is for company insurance liabilities... this isn't so much as for driver habits as it is for driver responsibilities or second party responsibilities...
trust me, i have 5 cameras on my smartdrive system for my company vehicle. i was flagged because i changed lanes, after being flashed with high beams from a third party driver to essentially pass them. it was called a swirve event. i was accused of changing lanes without proper clearance between myself and the party behind me on an intrastate highway, speed limit at minimum was 60mph....

Insurance greed is all i got from this video. This "safety system" is the reason why people dont want to drive for anyone and why they cant keep drivers.

Supervisor need cameras at thier desk pointed at thier faces all day.. Then slow thier computer way down, limit thier key strokes and if they look away from thier monitors it's an event! These companies set up PROFESSIONAL drivers for Failure.. removing all abilities to have full control over our machines so we have to get into positions (event causing) to do basic actions like passing. Only for micro managing (bosses rarely have ever driven a truck) and cover the companies butt.... forward facing I get driver facing NOT OK!
Ok so it only records during an event, if the event is deemed not a violation in San Diego and discarded why do you have videos of drivers who acted appropriately in their events? Shouldn't of those videos never left San Diego?
Great question! Ultimately SmartDrive is the company that makes the call on what gets passed to our safety department. When they pass the video to us, they include a small description of what the video entails, but our Safety department will deem if it's a "coachable moment" or not. In some instances, SmartDrive will pass the video along to us just incase something were to ever come back on us, or they want us to take a look to see if there is something we see that they did not. If the driver in the video got an "Atta Boy" like Chris mentions, we simply disregard the video. For instances where the driver presses the panic button, those videos bypass SmartDrive completely and are sent directly to our safety department because there is something that the driver wants us to see.
@@HeylTruckLines total agreement with this. i have used the panic button once, on purpose. most other times i hit the panic button is cause i am putting one leg over the other to get comfortable during down time.
i have had events sent to my supervisors that did not warrant disciplinary actions... these events are just brought to my attention, i watch them, and i learn, without intervention from said supervisors, what to do the next time i want to speed, or change lanes or whatever, the next time. i haven't had an event that warranted an action from any supervisors, and i am on probation with my job and could get me fired for having an even with smartdrive...
this is why i know i can get away with at least 4 miles over the original posted speed limits on some streets.. we have several highways and side streets undergoing construction, but the speed limit the system knows about doesn't change... so i can do 69 in a 60 though a construction zone and not get an event, or even get pulled over by the highway patrol or local cops and sheriffs cause i am considered an emergency vehicle... I LOVE MY JOB....

Can your boss adjust the sensitivity and scrutiny of the smart drive cam?
the company you work for can decide what is considered unsafe driving, they can adjust what triggers events, they can also just watch you with no events happening.
@@christopherwise7067 The SmartDrive system actually does not allow either Heyl Truck Lines or SmartDrive themselves to access the cameras UNLESS a trigger is made. Only when the camera is triggered (automatically or manually) is the footage sent accessible.

Sir you say that the cameras are only activated when there's an event that triggers it. Is that now is that just the one facing you or the one facing out also? And how does the camera get triggered when you pick up your cell phone because it's already happened to me and I didn't even have it in my ear it was just in my hand? I mean what if I picked up an eggplant instead would that trigger the camera?
Both the inward and the outward cameras get triggered by events. Simply picking something up would not trigger the camera to start recording. If the camera is triggered, it would have been a result of a hard brake, swerve, etc.

Does anyone know how do disable the system
The system does not disable and the footage is not able to be accessed unless triggered and sent to us by SmartDrive. There is a privacy mode that is able to be used when the truck is not running.
don't ask me how i know, cause i don't and has never happened to me. i use the smartdrive events that are sent to my supervisors as a way to get around the system all together...

@@christopherwise7067 once my drivers see the videos, they tend to figure out ways around not setting them off. Which in turn supports using them as you get better. We have fought and won 3 cell phone and 7 seatbelt violations in michigan with the driver facing camera
I don't want to be felt descriminated against, but do all company vehicles also have them? If not, why? I mean, that would be a form of discrimination.
There is no business recording the driver
They say these things protect drivers but we are protected by the legal system itself. If there is no evidence you did anything wrong, you are given the benefit of doubt. These cameras are too protect carriers and insurance companies, not drivers.
You guys think "Smart Drive" is bad, just wait until you have to deal with "Driveri."
