Stat wise she is as good as they were when they were rookies, just much more assist per game than any of them in their first 12 games. The point is not to know if she's gonna be part of the starting 5, just part of the bench. their narrative just doesn't hold up and seems to hide ulterior motives. Gilbert has probably the most articulate argument for Caitlin that I've heard. Winning a gold isn't the question, they really failed at everything else.
The measure of failure is winning gold- period. The problem with this situation and the Bronny drafting is essentially the same- are we reversing in society to the point where we are now routinely putting business/connections over merit in sports? That's old school stuff that we used to universally agree was a problem- that it is about who you knew or how popular you are. I can't believe the argument with Clark is less "she deserves to be on the team because of how good she is" instead of "well, she's not as good as the others, but she's popular and good for business." That latter argument is unacceptable in my mind. Merit should be the driver of roster decisions. The same merit that got Clark on USA Junior Teams, Iowa, and drafted #1.
Also, the Olympic team would be a great place to train your next superstar. Imagine how much better she would be next season working out alongside those top women
