Multiple characters' plot points in Nikke revolve around them blending in to the reat of humanity, which leads to funny scenerios like "wow, I sure am glad I am a normal human woman, right guys" - the white-haired, red-eyed voluptous woman with cloths vacuume sealed to her chest.

I'm not gonna dickride for Limbus despite loving the game, but I will put a little context. The game takes place in a wider world with pre established lore that occurs in the previous two games in the series.
Lobotomy Corporation, a monster management sim.
    And
Library of Ruina, a mix between a deck battler and visual novel.
I found it easy to let Limbus hit its stride after the tutorial because I had the context of knowing the madmen and madwomen behind the IP could in fact cook.
Coming into its godawful tutorial blind to both the gacha experience and the series, I can see why Pat couldn't keep going.

    LIMBUS COMPANYYYYY
but in all seriousness thats a very valid reaction to going in to limbus blind. It sucks how back-loaded the quality stuff is, but it was the first gacha the devs made and they definitely got better as time went on. Also the plot and lore of their games are *very* insular and self referential, which only makes the people who are really into it seem absolutely insane (which is justified).
And as much as i hate the "it gets good" defense, i genuinely think that it becomes a fantastic visual novel with an only somewhat obtuse game tacked on to it. I just genuinely think they dont have the budget to go back and fix the earlier parts. Also it only has one currency and two upgrade materials that are used for everything which i think counts for something

@@gameb9oy If they were talking about a game like TOF which does have like 10 actual currencies going on for It's gacha system, I would understand, but Pat went gacha brain on what are literally just boss drops.
Woolie I can understand with his megaman Issue but It's not even relative to the Bossing situation Pat is talking about because there's not a thing in the megaman game or outside the game telling him to fight a boss or something so it in all likelyhood could just be a remaining aspect of gacha that wasn't ported to offline, on top of that, Woolie mostly understands things if he can relate it to a fighting game concept because that's what he mostly knows.
Pat understands the concept of grinding a boss for boss drops, He plays MMOs and MonHun, games where grinding a boss for It's drops is normal.

as a limbus head, few things
    - yeah, the tutorial's shite
    - the combat system is weird but once you get it down it's *IMO* really rewarding
    - limbus is an indie game, like IIRC it has 15 employees (in general) and 1? translator and 2? actual developers, which is why it can't really do that kind of earlygame touchup that it needs. c'est la vie
    - people talk all weird because they're *all* based on old books, but it clears itself up a little around chapter 2 or 3 - that's what i've seen tends to hook people
    - this is the 3rd in a series, all completely different genres, which is both why the fans are Like That and why the game is Like That

Pat talking about the Limbus tutorial feeling out of date and "alpha" is exactly how I when I was trying to give Granblue Fantasy a shot. The tutorial intro stuff felt so weird. Also finding out there wasn't a story justification for the gatcha system was so confusing to me

    • @omegaeraser
      @omegaeraser 8 месяцев назад +3

Not that I want anyone to go into hell that is grindblue fantasy, but they actually made proper-ish tutorial update recently where you clear bunch of missions increasing in difficulty and gives you quite decent early-mid game weapon grid along with some chars and also teaches you some basic stuff (still missing some other things but oh well considering how needlessly complex that game is can't do it all). Though there are still videos on youtube that explain things better than ingame guides/tutorials do.
Thing that's weird and counterintuitive about gbf compared to most other gachas is that core of your power is in weapons grind, not in characters you pull/get. Regardless of what various tier lists might say, those things really only start mattering after you reach certain point of farming up other things that even whales can't really escape afaik. And that's another issue with gbf, its core gameplay is farming up tiers of weapons to be strong to move onto farming next tier of weapons. Some of those things are literally years long process. But, if you are interested in basic events/characters and various collabs which gbf has lots of you can give it a try without worrying about "proper/optimal" way to play. There are coop raids that you can host and leech of just to get certain clear prizes so you're not locked out of content just because you're newbie in 9-10y old game.

Nikke is like, the exact opposite though, if you’re new, the new Nikkes are mediocre, and the events encouraged for all players actively spoil mid-late game story.

In many ways, my experience with F/GO echoes a lot of the comments here.
I started in late 2019, which in terms of the story was around the time Arc 1.5 (Epic of Remnant) was ending and Arc 2 (Cosmos in the Lostbelt) was beginning.
I didn’t finish Arc 1/Observer on Timeless Temple until late 2020/early 2021 (by which point the Lostbelt 3 chapter for Arc 2 was out), and only barely finished Lostbelt 3 in time for a story event requiring it by skipping all of EoR (something the game allows you to do as it’s an interquel arc) and leaving it for later.
That being said, a lot of that was due to laziness and inconsistency in my playtime. Even then, Arc 1’s story content was a lot easier thanks to powerful support characters like Merlin drastically altering the meta.
It’s only around Arcs 1.5/2 where the truly difficult content arrives and friend supports aren’t enough to carry you (though the last boss fights of Arc 1 can still be tough if you don’t know what you’re doing).
Ever since then, I’ve been able to keep pace with the main story without too many issues.
However, one of FGO’s biggest problems is that it is allergic to rerunning old limited time events in a timely fashion and in recent years has almost completely abandoned event reruns, creating a large content deficit for newcomers.

I don't think the translation for Limbus Company is bad translation. It's actually a good one, it's just the people who you hear talking in game at first are MEANT to talk weird. And some loosen up later but yeah, the translation is not bad. The script is just meant to be weird for those guys
Similarly, the combat system is not just dragging from left to right. There's two types of battles: one where you do the drag from left to right, the other is where you choose attacks and parts to clash with directly
Personally I feel like what would be best is to first experience the world of the game through previous entries especially because Library of Ruina feels like it'd be way way more of something Pat or Woolie would enjoy

To pats question at around 36:10 the reason you don't just have a one stop shop point to farm materials is most likely so you don't overwhelm new players who want to upgrade their unit only to have 15 different stages all pop up at once and even more so in that sooner mats are for same element type but different characters depending on when they came out, which is a point we could talk about but that's tangential.

I thought that the game explained things well, and every piece of information was something that I still used each mission. Besides blocking/dodging/counter I guess, everything hits pretty light where I'm at.
I also don't get the hate for Ishmael either, she's literally as normal as can be, next to Gregor and Meurseult. She was even described as a person who listens to orders and gets the job done.

Thankfully the game will take some time to get to the point where you'll be punished for not knowing things (there were some early roadblocks, one was right before the chapter 2 dungeon actually, but they got nerfed), and by the time it happens the player will either learn enough from just playing or at least feel invested enough to go look up advice.

@@Joseph_Siri The thing that made Pat stop was the game not making available at all times the names of each Sin affinity. He got the tutorial for it, and the game then expects you to have memorized them all. Apart from that, there's stuff like not showing where the Coins are when they are presented, not differentiating between base power and coin power, not explaining the chance system(which is what most people would pay attention to at the start since it shines golden at the upper center part of the screen), the game makes a big deal about the importance of Resonance, hugely hypes it up, but then doesnt explain exactly what it does. Though he didnt get there, im not sure if the game explains how the difference in Offense Levels affects Clashing. and then there's small stuff like not explaining how which status effects' Counts can go lower, you need to either pay a lot of attention or check outside of the game to realize that Tremor Bursting does not lower Tremor Count, while every other status effect does lower its Count when it procs.

It's a weird paradox when it comes to Limbus. Like, the game is designed as an entry to the City. The protagonist is an amnesiac who keeps notes on new things they learn and you're literally on a tour bus.
But then the game starts throwing in characters from past games, referencing things only long-time players will get, and even dropping what were major spoilers in past games as though they're common knowledge.
Very much a "the why matters more than the what" sort of setting, like hearing people talk about the White Nights isn't going to ruin Lobotomy Corporation for you. But it's still kind of strange as a "newbie's window."
It feels like what you'd experience if you started with JoJo Part 7, to use your analogy. Like, you understand the story, you vibe with the characters, but there is a *context* you are fundamentally missing that makes things feel a bit off.

Honestly, no suprised about Limbus Company. A lot of Korean MMOs of past decade are like this. They always have weird introduction missions that suppose to sell you on the game, but it's rarel, if ever, updated and only way they fix it is by allowing you to skip it and play up to date modern version of game. And they all structured very similarly - either you are in your ultra instinct god form using super overopowered abilities, but then lose them, wake up from a dream, get pulled out by some magical force or something and start game as a noob, or you are just a random schmuck that becomes chosen one and has to "learn how to use the power".

Being someone who was playing since release, the first 3 chapters, which I considered basically amazing when I beat them all like a year ago, now feel like they're almost chump change in comparison to 4, 5, and 6. The tutorial is rough because it doesn't tell you the most important thing, which is "Look, all these skill effects and sin affinities are cool and important, but the number 1, most important thing in the game, is how high it rolls, and to focus on losing as few clashes as humanly possible. More coins = more hits = more damage and more chances to win a clash, even if you roll unlucky."
Maybe now that Library of Ruina has a console release, it'd be better to try checking that out as like, an actual game that lets you get familiarized to concepts that are in Limbus in both gameplay and story? Limbus company is a turn based rpg, Pat. Weird phone game gimmick doesnt change that.
In defense of Limbus Company(which isnt much of a defense but an excuse). Pat is coming off of checking and playing AAA and AAAA gacha games published by multibillion dollar companies with thousands of employees while Limbus is from an indie dev team with like 50 people which was at the moment of release as low budget as it could get, and it didnt change much since then, so while I understand the whiplash that comes from seeing the presentation to moving into gameplay, it's really unfair to use that as a metric to judge a game, you are essentially comparing GTA V to Undertale.
I dont have much hope for the tutorial to get fixxed as Project Moon is the kind of company that takes on a project and realizes they are biting more than they can chew... but they keep on chewing. The credits for the latest story update wasnt much bigger from previous ones, so unless they start to hire 20 or so new devs with all the gacha money that is flowing in, the company will be fully working on just keeping the pace with the new story updates(which got a lot better than at the beginning, which was a new episode and one miniepisode per Season, and now we have a new episode, two miniepisodes, and the Walpurgisnacht, which used to be just a special limited banner, is its own story event with new fights) instead of fixing previous stages of the game or starting to work on a new game(WHERE THE FUCK IS DISTORTION DETECTIVE, PROJECT MOON?).
But yeah, everything else was pretty fair from Pat.

Limbus is a bit like Drakengard 3. You are intended to see these people as broken waste of oxygen forced to work together because otherwise it would make their later development nonsense. From their backgrounds it makes sense they are unlikable but at the end they become some of the best ensemble of characters in a game I have seen in a while. Narrativly I liked it better than Nier and it´s leagues above its gacha competition.
And the game is only half finished at most. We still have 6 more cantos to go for character and yet it keeps peaking with each one. Canto 1 and 2 are introduction at best. But from 3 onwards the kid gloves are off.
Another problem is that PM obviously intended for most players to play Library of Ruina before, which is very good introduction to the setting. Both are very slow burns but PM doesnt let go of the valve for a second.

Project Moon is an indie dev studio with like maybe 30-40 people, not all of them are devs and their last two games had to be crowdfunded. They don't have that Mihoyo money and they just now started making cash with Limbus. Hell the fact that Ruina is getting a console port is a shock and something I never thought would happen. While I would love for them to fix up that intro one day, expecting them to suddenly have Star Rail like graphics and quality is absurd.

Just wait until people tell Pat that a lot of Nikke designs are actually made by women, equal gooning in the gacha industry.

As a day 1 NIKKE player I feel really bad about people calling Aria bad when Pat pulled her. Aria is an endgame boss specific tech options. She is not bad, just not doing much in early Campaign, but almost anything handles early campaign. In general NIKKEs biggest progression delay is the giga long idle game you gotta play for level ups in the synchro device, and pulling the best units helps so little with that that unless a person's first 5 SSRs are exactly Brid, Eunwha, Signal, Crow, and Yuni I would not advise a reroll. You need 25 units for Solo Raid later anyways so most of the roster sees play at a high level.

      @RavenCloak13 8 месяцев назад

Nah, honestly it's just for units, don't listen to the people who can't remember what you actually have to do for the early game because they played too much and don't remember actually what the system is and are just auto piloting.

Reminder, the main artist for NIKKE is women and specifically ones the CEO's wife.
Now the real want. You know Steller Blade? NIKKE got an announcment for it for special login bonus. Now imagine they add Eve to NIKKE and vice versa, they add NIKKE (probably Rapi, Red Hood and such) to Steller Blade. Just randomly adding a completely different mechanics for the NIKKE where you get cover shooter mechanics for them.
I also just want a Time Crisis game with the pedal. This is getting a fucking stage play so I legit think they would make an arcade game for it at some point.

Btw, you can play Nikke horizontally on the phone, but it is kinda awkward, imo. And you can fullscreen/adjust resolution but not mid-game.
To be frank, some of the high level content in the game is just much much better to fight on the PC version than the phone, imo.

Limbus Company is a really fun game for me, but the kind of game you probably really get a better time with by hearing about it or watching footage of it rather than playing it. Because it's basically the third story in a series, and the *fourth* if you count the novel that introduces Vergilius and his whole deal. On top of, you know, all the jank going on with its tutorial.
Also I feel like if Pat or Woolie tried either Library of Ruina or Lobotomy Corp they'd get even more convinced to drop it because those games are incredibly opaque in how they teach you as well.

The "you have to finish the tutorial to go to the options" thing killed F/GO for me. I just wanted to find a way to make the text boxes not work in the worst way imaginable, but the game kept pushing me from battle to battle with the entire UI locked for so long that I gave up and uninstalled it.
The punchline is that no, there is no way to make the text boxes work.

Listen, yall are going about this the wrong, you gotta try Titan War where every unit has an "all your base" style engrish voice over, Bloodline where the draw mechanic is being intimate with your captured werewolf concubine, zombie strike which is a zombie apocalypse game, but it's a clone of idle heroes so they have a bunch of modern fantasy character assets casting healing spells and fireballs. That's mobile gacha games.

Woolie says he doesn't like MMO's, but he hasn't played Black Desert that uses fighting game level inputs... Pvp opener? Shift Rightclick -> R -> D+F -> Shift leftclick -> A+R -> W+F -> Shift W -> S+F etc. May as well be keyboard equivalents to circle inputs.

As somebody currently going through Lobotomy Corporation to then play Library of Ruina and to then play Limbus Company-
Yeahhhh I don't know who recommended Limbus Company to Pat but that was not the play to make lmao. Could call from a mile away that he'd have a million problems with the game without the proper context (of the game series and Project Moon as a company itself) going in.

    • @RavenCloak13
      @RavenCloak13 8 месяцев назад +4

That has literally nothing to do with anything.
Two of those games have completely different mechanics, none of the original characters show up as units he can get in Limbus and it doesn't change the fact he doesn't like the characters or stripped down tutorial systems of Ruina that end up going into the Arcsys problem of making thing easier to then add one other thing that ends up turning it way harder.

The only Gacha game i liked was One Piece Treasure Cruise because the combat was like a high precision Mario and Luigi: Brothers in Time.
All the content had very specific unit skill requirements if you wanted to beat it with the free to play units that you could unlock, so there was a sense of progression and earning your way forward with each unit being a tool in your arsenal.
It eventually became a grindfest and im not sure if its still doable with exclusively free to play units.
