Woolie tried to flip his trap card "Racial Detection" (that banishes all "Law-abiding" trait monster cards, and for each monster banished, deals 2000 lifepoints to the respective player), only to find out that the field spell played by Pat called "Super Pal Plantation" not only gives all montsers on the field the "Law-abiding" trait, but also turns any monster(s) who already had "Law-abiding" trait prior to the field spell into a "Race Warrior" trait monster.
Since Pat's 3 monsters were all previously "Law-abiding" monsters, Pat's monster's new trait have become the "Race Warriors", and so therefore Pat's monsters do not get affected by the trap card and will not get banished, and Pat will not take any lifepoint damage.
Woolie, on the other hand, has 4 monsters on the field, and since their traits have changed to "Law-abiding", all 4 get banished and with each monster deals 2000 lifepoints, and therefore dealing a total of 8000 lifepoints to Woolie, winning Pat the match.
Woolie, having lost the Race games, is now sent to the Blackest Realm, also known as the "Woolie Hole".

Okay at 13:20 I have a slight objection to make: the reason I don't put the pal beds and workbenches inside my house is *not* because I care about "disgusting pal juices"; I still have the shoddy bed lol. It's because if pals are inside the house, their pathing breaks; doubly-so if they're a very big pal that can't even fit in the house in the first place.
Woolie: Count me in!!!
As a Digimon fan I should briefly explain that the reason many digimon fans dislike the Pokemon comparison is because Digimon isn't all that similar to Pokemon. A lot of that is based off of not knowing what Digimon is to the point that I have seen people say Digimon took stuff they don't have from Pokemon (like emphasis on capturing creatures), stuff Pokemon didn't invent (like monster allies that fight for you), stuff that isn't really evidence (Digimon didn't have an anime because Pokemon did, guys) or stuff that Digimon had before Pokemon did (Like certain monsters. Even the mon suffix was somthing digimon had first used in marketing before Pokemon's name changes for its US release.)
Not to mention that Digimon came out too soon to really ape Pokemon as a concept (97 for Digimon, although it began as a Tamagotchi spinoff, and Tamagotchi is months younger than Pokemon), as well as franchises far more similar to Pokemon than Digimon. I am not denying that similarities exist but it is not nearly as much as some say.
Digimon world is tamagotchi for boys.
Digimon Story is knock of Shin Megami Tensei.
Megami Tensei is the first monster taming game so it stands to reason Digimon would be inspired by it.
Similarities between Digimon and shin megami tensei are far more visable
You collect monsters through negotiations.
Fusion is a major mechanic (in some digimon games more then others)
Skills are designed to be inherted up and down evolution/Fusion trees.
Combat is part based.
Also shin megami tensei "DIGITAL" devil saga.
And I wanna be clear I'm not saying "Digimon is knock of megami tensei" as an insult. It's like every other genre creator. Every monster tamer is gonna be like megami tensei. Just like every souls like is similar to dark souls.
Also pat called smt a pokemon knock off in this video but the first megami tensei game came out in 1980s.
It helps that the Digimon just wanna be your friend. There's no brainwashing they just like you and generally have the same personality/goals/vibe you aren't collecting a stable just one trusted PIC with their own thoughts and opinions.
Humans can be put into a Pal Sphere.
Anything in a Pal Sphere can be butchered.

At no point are you actually required to treat pals harshly or murder them (you get the same amount of loot from "non-lethal" takedowns), and all the "evil" options are either hidden (like capturing humans) or you have to purposefully unlock the technology to kill Pokemon. you CHOSE to do this.
Man was the real monster all along
The craziest thing about this Palworld business is Nintendo having to release a statement saying they are aware of Palworld (like no sh!t of course they are), and people can stop telling them about how Palworld is a massive infringement on the Pokémon IP. It boggles my mind that there is a statistically significant number of people out there that feel *compelled* to warn Big Daddy Nintendo that he's being stolen from. Like they get something out of being an unpaid snitch to a bally megacorp that has a veritable army of people whose job it is to protect the IPs.
See, thats what im saying, You'd think that people would use their brains to understand that the Pokémon Company isnt some small organization that is just getting by on scraps, they're doing VERY WELL for themselves, it is a juggernaut company that has become mainstream enough to send cease and desist to things that copy them within 24 hours. @@michaelbecker7288 well usually the message is just showing how insane or absurd the thing is. Palworld isn’t trying to do that, it’s just about having fun with what it is for what it is
@@miguelnewmexico8641Taking a piece of fiction and making it a porno isn't a parody, no matter what they might call it. A parody takes what is already there and exaggerates it for effect.
'Pokemon with guns' might work however, depending on how you frame it. I'm not sure Palworld manages that, though. A parody would be Ash throwing Pikachu a gun during a gym fight, highlighting how Pokemon are mistreated/"knocked out" for sport. Actually killing the Pokemon makes it less funny, imho. Just bringing them to the doctor so you can keep putting them in cock-fights world better.

The thing about the AI tech is that, because the CEO is so open about the tech and when they actually use it, he would have no reason NOT to promote it as using the tech. But he didn't. That alone tells me they never used AI for it. Along with of course it having been made in 3 years, well before the tech of image generation was anywhere close to being good enough to use for designs.
"image generation" doesn't even help that much in UE5 asset making. It WOULD help a ton in GODOT or some Unity instances (or RPG maker, assuming anyone is still even using that thing)
At this risk of sounding kinda pretentious, I gotta think that Woolie and many others on the internet have this unfortunate mindset of thinking that A LOT of people are capable of reading subtext or seeing a concept and thinking about it in a way that isn't how it's presented. There are many of these people who are, like, top 100 most-viewed streamers on Twitch. They don't think about what the studio implies by making a Pokémon slave game with guns. They say "Dang, new Pokémon game came out. Kinda looks like slavery lol. Kinda sus lmao.". And then they react to it. And that's it. That is the thought-process.
Like, Woolie is saying a lot of this stuff while specifying that he thinks that most people can see it as a critique of consumerism, but the problem is that a lot of people probably don't. They'll see it and, instead, say "if it was supposed to be a critique, why doesn't it say so in the ad?".
WHAT? Scroty McBoogerballs is CLEARLY PRO-Consumerism!
Palworld reminds me a lot about my most favorite Shin Megami Tensei series ever, Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha. In there, you the "monster Trainer" are a main fighter who uses a gun (+ swords), you collect a variety of monsters to fight on your behalf in real time action style combat, and every monster has a type/family/category it falls under which allows them to do special actions out in the field.
One of the funniest moments I ever had was when I sent out a tentacle monster of the Wind family using the special ability of the Wind family of monsters to Scout an area. During a Scout the Wind monster will fly off and after a few seconds come back to tell you about monsters you may encounter in the area and on occasion give you a random item it picked up, such as a health potion or a gem you can sell for money. Well, this one time, my monster, a demon that was just a floating eyeball with tentacles, came back from a Scout and I got the message "Ichimokuren came back with a pair of used underwear. ... you threw them away." 😆
Like, my dude, I don't want to judge by appearances, but do I even want to know how you got these!? 🤣
Not gonna lie, I LOVE the brazen honesty of the Pocket Pair CEO. Everyone else tip toes around things but he just outright SAYS it: "Yeah so I just take elements from all my favorite games and mash them together. Oh yeah I love the Survival Craft genre! My game is mostly based on Ark but we took some stuff from Rimworld, Terreria, The Forest, Sons of the Forest, Valheim, Sunken Land, Rust, Raft, Astroneer, Mechanic, and Conan Exiles! What? Oh we had no clue what we were doing! I'll start working on another game as soon as Palworld hits early access, assuming we're not out of business by then! Hahaha!" If this dude used AI, he not only would have SAID it, he would have been PROUD of it! You don't normally get a guy who will openly admit to stuff like this!
Oh and yeah, he didn't make a Crypto coin, he made the biggest Crypto Exchange in Japan which seems to have ONLY dealt in Bit Coin and Etherium. It got hacked and he sold it to Monex, washing his hands of it. I think Palworld was built off of the money he had from selling it because he said it was a little under $7 million to make it with a staff of eventually 40. So about the staff and budget of a PS2 game.
Oh also, a third of the staff is artists if you check the credits. Even if he DID use AI, no one lost their job that's for sure!

The design of some of the monsters are obvious pokemon copies.
It seems like people are conflating these.
Yeh, but that’s the point
The problem I see with just instantly declaring anything is AI based on style or "vibes", is that AI was trained on something, right? Well what if people naturally draw or design things in that style?
Like a year or two ago there was that situation on Reddit where someone's art was removed because it "looked" AI-ish. So are people just supposed to learn a different style? What happens once AI starts using that new style?
I’ve definitely seen artists who have incredibly vibrant and detailed works that look like Ai from a glance and i feel horrible every time
in a sense, those artists are gonna have a harder time doing their thing until the AI hate mostly blows over.
AI is something to be minded, but so many people are becoming hateful fanatics against it to the point that they are doing more harm than good.
I hobby in ue5 and from all the documentation and digging into their code, the base building is baked into the engine. The impressive part is the scope.
Pat talking about clones and derivative works reminds me of when "Halo Killer" was its own subgenre for a few years. And the giant list of RE4 clones that came out between 2006-2010.

This genuinely good work, I have seen a lot of of the "discourse" and I often left it more confused than anything. Thanks Pat
Palworld is a game that, who's head, checks all the boxes as the internet villain of the week.
However, the game itself, until proven otherwise, has not done much wrong. Copy meshes too closely? Oh yeah, sure, there's that, but then we'd have the Bayo sprite argument again.
NO ONE would've complained if this game flopped. Most of the hate is purely because it is popular, and I have yet to see a justifiable reason for otherwise.
If you bring up the head CEO, I'm going to point to EVERY CEO IN GAMING and say THEY'RE ALL BAD. It is not an argument to me, especially when it seems the CEO did not have a hand in development of the game anyway, save for finding random teenagers off the street.
Bayo sprite is a pose translated from 3D to 2D. If they ripped / modifier 3D meshes that is something entirely different.
Also if the hate is purely due to popularity, why is Lethal Company not hated? Lethal Company has 10+ million sales.
Plus with a smaller company the CEO being bad matters a lot more. Pocket pair is estimated to be like 50 employees max, they are ways closer and more involved with the product as a result. There's no way they wouldn't be

I don't want to say I've got low expectations for Pat and Woolie's conversations, because I really don't... but damn, this was an especially great, thoughtful, nuanced take on a subject that the entire fucking internet has chosen to be overwhelming stupid and hyperbolic about.
I'm so happy! Not only did my favorite podcast finally get its latest hour long snippit, but it's about Palworld, the funniest, most insanely stupid bit of games history to drop in a long time. Palworld is so fucking shameless that it should be studied in "Interactive Arts" college/university classes decades from now.
I love this is the most sain discussion about this I can find.
Great talk yall I love this podcast.
Pat did a great job. Hope they can have Gene on to discuss it at some point since he has been doing a ton of work on this subject.
I think skipping over Craftopia is a bit silly. Palworld is 98% Craftopia.
Craftopia already had the production line assets and you could enslave npcs including the egyptian god Anubis to barf out wrenches.
Boss fights in it all happened in basically the same round rooms where they keep flailing just as unenthusiastically around. etc.etc.
That game got like 2 major updates that fucked its progression and then it just sat there.
Additionally both, Woolie and Pat, have almost 0 experience with survival games. Having Slaves has been a thing since Conan Exiles(5 years old), Dragon Quest Builders 1/2 has room presets that lets you assign NPCs to do work for you etc.etc. All these features have been part of the "general " Sandbox game experience for a while. It wasn't anything new for the genre when Craftopia released, it wasn't anything new for when Palworld released.
I dont think anything Palworld does is illegal but its HIGHLY uncreative, deeply cynical and extremely scammy and it does put the message really out there: Making assets store games isnt just profitable it's the ideal product.
TLDR: They basically resold Craftopia full price but with Pokemon-like assets and the reason they can do it is cuz nobody holds them to a standard.
Naturally that won't influence people who just want to make cool games and per se vilifying asset stores is also not productive because they can be great skeleton elements for making games.
This is peak "Hustle or Scam" content.
I listen to all the stuff from audio so I haven’t seen these guys since the good old days damn wools and Pat lost a ton of weight good on you guys! Also pats becoming less of a ginger every day
Pocket Pair is like if Asylum movies were good for some reason
this feels like a "gone horribly right" situation
Pat has managed to trigger me in a way he probably didn't intend to, for the record smt pre-dates pokemon as a monster collecting game, while neither are a clone of eachother it would be easier to argue pokemon as the smt clone
Woolie finds his subtle, implied racism is utterly powerless in the face of nuclear-bomb impact, blatant racism.
Honestly, what really makes me curious about the whole situation is the fact that I've seen so many people with little-to-no stake in the discourse - friends, acquaintances, randoms - who took one look at the game and immediately said "people are gassing up this piece of shit? it doesn't even look good, what?". To the average joe, Palworld looks like Yet Another Early Access Open World Survival Crafting game, which immediately turns them off of the very idea. Even the folks I know who watched a stream or two of the game feel like they saw everything they needed to just from that, and are completely befuddled that it's been so hyped-up.
To me, that indicates that the 'mons aren't integrated well enough to make the game stand out to regular people - the majority of people who're playing it are those who already have a vested interest in cute-cool monster designs. And that's a big problem, because that means without some kind of update or revision, the game probably isn't going to be attracting a lot of new sales. It also tells me that the game's fun-factor stems not from the Pokemon, but from a decent execution of the bog-standard survival formula. And while that's certainly worth acknowledging, it still doesn't make the game stand out from its contemporaries.
(On top of that, you have the handful of Terminally-Online people who bought the game not because it looked fun to them, but because they wanted to spite Pokemon. Whether those folks play it or not, they're likely to abandon the game much sooner than people who bought it because they like Survival Crafting games. Spite does not help develop a healthy playerbase.)
And then, of course, you have literally every other game coming out. Yakuza came out today, Persona 3 comes out soon, and there's probably other stuff in February that I can't remember off the top of my head. How much of Palworld's playerbase is going to evaporate the moment those games release? And more importantly, how many of them do you think are going to bother coming back to the game later on?
It's just fascinating to me from a psychological/social perspective. The game's death bells were ringing from the very beginning and it's already obvious that it's going to end up in the same rabbit-hole that Temtem did (remember that one? I didn't; I had to ask a friend to remind me what it was called lmao) - yet all this discourse continues anyway.
The pals are entirely ignorable to experienced survival crafting players, and outside of the Pal mechanic it has almost none of a traits of a mon tamer game. This game may not even last a month. Across both Steam and Discord I only ever seen 1-3 people playing it at a time.
Also Tekken 8 just came out too.
Never forget that SMT came first...
Second. Cosmic Soldier came first.
MT came before SMT.
Pat caught a Dark Type Pal
Yeah I'll be honest the people against pal world saying "hey Nintendo get rid of this" does make me act up and say "we must defend pal world we can't let them take it away from us!" 😂
People dont even take 5 minutes to research this and will quickly scream "AI AI AI"
A kinder, gentler chattel.
I have been waiting to see you two cover this game for days.
Small woolie Victory with the Kanye quote and flex. Really good most missed it.
Twitter heard AI and ripoff and ran so far with it as to contact nintendo and pokemon asking them to sue the palworld devs.
People will shit on nintendo for shutting down smash competitions but beg them to take action against a team of 50 people.
I cant imagine asking for more restrictions on top of everything else.
