My wife and I saw a flock of fifty or so Black Herons in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. They would fly around a bit, land, and all of them would go into this feeding posture at once. We had no idea that they did this and was the craziest thing we had ever seen. This clip doesn’t show it, but they have bright yellow feet like a Snowy Egret that they jiggle in the water under that canopy.
If you ever come to Madagascar: There is a lake in the capital Antananarivo, called Lac Anousy. The local people call it Rano Maimbo (Water with the bad smell) - and there you can watch this bird all day long. It seems it doe not need clean water :-)

Two years later .... they do it so as to hide the reflected glare of the sky on the water, so that they can see the fish underneath.
This is one of the coolest birds.
