Thank you so much for posting this wonderful video without music! Even if the 'living' surrounding sounds are layered in the edit, it is so nice not to have to listen to blasting music drown out the narrator!
@PhillipAnthonyTM Thanks for the comment but if anything the other name for this species is the Black Egret. I have never heard "Umbrella Heron" as a formal name for this species. To stop confusion we could just call it Egretta ardesiaca...but some might say thats being a bit poncy :)
I have another postulation and purely conjecture only. The umbrella possibly gives a shade, so there is less reflection and refraction, and the hunter can see deeper and clearer into the water, facilitating the catch. As one would observe, the Egret does not set up the umbrella and wait, it keeps searching. Please comment on this. Thanks!
As it shades and uncovers relatively quickly in this video, I wonder if rather than encouraging fish to hide under the "safety" of its shadow interpretable as an obscuring branch, etc., that it is instead preventing reflections from above the surface allowing it to see below the surface more clearly. This may also serve to obscure its impending attack as the fish could not make out its head and neck as clearly from below.
Hi Alex, thanks for watching. Black egrets (herons) have a preference for shallow, freshwater perennial habitats, so they are more common in floodplains and marshes, or beside ponds, lakes or dams. However, they have been recorded in estuarine waters, where they typically stay close to freshwater inlets.
A beautiful bird and a beautiful video. Unbelievable content, 9/10. The only thing I felt keeping this video from a solid score was the black band across it at all times. It's almost like it was supposed to grab attention at the beginning in order to inform viewers and then fade away. Instead it just becomes an eyesore and I feel most just either don't notice it for a while (due to it's constant presence) or are terribly annoyed by it. Keep up the work, even a decade later. ~Dagomara
Is that actually learned behavior vs instinctive.?they all do it and it isn't something that they learn from watching others. I believe they are born with that skill but perhaps still have to perfect it with practice.
the shades cut off reflection to give a clearer view. this is nature. a beautiful God creation. thank you for the education. you taught us to share good.
I thought the same thing. Also seems to present breeding plumage on head and back. When raptors cover their prey to hide it from others who might steal it, the wing trick is called "manteling".

That black band across the video is really distracting. Either remove it or place it lower.
Or he could just leave it the way it is, and ignore you.
GBLynden's RC not to mention to absolutely atrocious narrating
GBLynden's RC Or learn to get used to it you piece of shit 😁
He gets a fish at 1:52
