  • President and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors, Andrew Kirby, joined us for a conversation at the October 2024 Naamsa SA Auto Week in Cape Town, South Africa.
Kirby spoke about the humble origins of Toyota in South Africa, being a family business, to the juggernaut it is today; Toyota has topped the sales charts for 44 years now.
Kirby confirmed that Toyota will be bringing a fully electric vehicle to our market in 2025, but for now the company is riding high on a wave of hybrid sales, dominating that segment of the market.

Please ask him what Toyota has against sunroofs in South Africa yet the same cars get sunroofs in the US👐🏾

Cost. It would cost Toyota more to put on a sunroof than it would some other brands. Despite what persons beleive with all the new cars on the roads, SA is still a price sensitive market and despite persons being willing to pay the Toyota tax, that notion will only go so far.

Good question, including panoroofs fir the SUV's

@@mindfreeze0838 bro the same cars we have here have sunroofs in other markets & some of them are even assembled here in the Prospecton plant & exported to other countries so I honestly don’t think cost has anything to do with it.
Toyota has honestly lost the younger market to VW & more recently, the Chinese cause they still think the notion of reliability will keep working for them, it still does in a way but not as much as before. They should just give the customers what they want, sunroofs & a better infotainment system‼️

I saw an article about this I think cost and reliability. It also frustrates me

This! I was strongly considering the corolla hatch XR and the Sedan. I've seen the US versions of both and I love them. I told the salesman the biggest reason I'm looking at Honda Civic RS is because it appeals more to what I like, especially having a sunroof.

This interview bypassed one of the big reasons people dont choose Toyota, theft and the high insurance rates because of this. Less theft risk in buying a Suzuki or Chery.

I know nothing plus I'm lazy to research, but what's happening with Toyota and Suzuki designs are they built in the same factory with just a different badge and tail light assembly point in the factory?

Well Suzuki has a huge chunk of the Indian market and Toyota would like to tap more into that market, hense the collaboration. However that is with limitations, we wont have any toyota that is similar to Suzuki swift as it is the brands flagships model. Similarly you wont see a Suzuki that has a corolla design. Toyota has the technology and Suzuki has a market share in India. So both benefit from that partnership, with Suzuki, its more of affordability, and Toyota we know its all about reliability. So merging the two concept benefits toyota, and Suzuki, we see the benefits of that in SA where we have an array of cars from both brands that are way too affordable in a market that is competitive and for most people, expensive.

If you look at the inability of Toyota SA to provide stock to Dealers, it is inevitable that they will be losing Market Share. Why not rather interview Andrew regarding this planning problem at Toyota SA? It repeats with every new model as if they don't learn or care.

Please dont by Chinese . The fact that their cars are so heavy on fuel proves that they are far from fully developed.
