Yay! I was one of the people who requested this one. The best version is the longer dance mix that moves into a cover of “Where Did Our Love Go” by the Supremes. That’s the one we danced to at the clubs in the 80s. I’m really happy that you’re did this by decades today. That was a cool choice! One thing about the 80s is that both music and culture incorporated a lot of new aspects of life, like the technology you mentioned, but much of it was also looking back towards the 50s & early 60s, with its upbeat feel. You’ll notice in some music videos that some the clothes have a look from that earlier era, but with new touches. You can see that in the B52s song you did, for example. We hunted for vintage clothes from the 50s & 60s at thrift stores back then. It was a blast! Early/mid 80s music will always have a special place in my heart, since I was a kid & early teen then, obsessed with music. This was so fun! Thanks for reacting to this. It was great to see your face light up! 💕

Some of my favorites are Torch Song, Bedsitter, Kitchen Sink Drama, Ruby Red, Melancholy Rose, The Boy Who Came Back, Memorabilia (the long version with Cindy Ecstasy), his cover of I Feel Love with Bronski Beat, and the classic Say Hello, Wave Goodbye. Gloria Jones' mid-1960s version of this song was massive in the UK Northern Soul scene through the 70s and even 80s. Few knew that the singer was the same Gloria Jones that was driving the Mini that hit a tree in Barnes, London, killing boyfriend and Glam Rock idol, Marc Bolan, two weeks before his 30th birthday. The location of the crash, just over the brow of a hill combined with a sweeping right curve, remains a fan-maintained shrine over 40 years later.
Tainted love was originally done by Gloria Jones in 1964. It became a massive favourite on the UK northern soul scene some years later and was rereleased in 1976.

One of my favorite song to dance to at "Le Cargo" in Montreal, back then. Maybe it was named Cargo because it looked like a warehouse all painted in black.
Must also do their song called 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'. I was at Sort Cell's final gig and they finished with this song. Anthemic to their fans - Just as much as Tainted Love. - There is also a better version of Tainted Love where they mix it with 'Where Did Our Live Go'. The blend gives me chills. Seriously I have Loved Tainted love since their version first came out, though now that I know the combo version, I prefer it. The instrumentals are all Save Ball's doing.
The 80's had such a diverse range of music - kids could hitch their wagon to whichever scene they felt connected to, as for me I liked it all, I was greedy! LOL Eurythmics, D Mode, etc were pop culture extraordinaire - rock bands Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Huey Lewis and the News, Poison, Dire Straits - and of course metal bands, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Guns and Roses and many many more different genres and scenes, I loved The Cure for awhile too when I was a teen! The 70's, 80's and 90's were fab for music!
Up until last month I thought this was the original. Gloria Jones did the original in 1964🤯and it is amazing, especially considering the time period. That being said, this then becomes one of my favorite covers. You should still check out Marilyn Manson version too, though.
The original version of this was song by Gloria Jones who was married to mark bolan who was a pop star in the 70s,it was a big hit on the northern soul seen in the seventies played at the Wigan casino , mark was the lead singer of Trex pop group, they were a glam rock band
My brother had the album and played it when I visited him. I didn't think much of it and preferred the Human League's Dare. Roll on a decade when I started buying CDs and realised that the songs I liked by Soft Cell was on 'that' album. I listen to the disc on my separates system and the content and production is incredible. One of my favourite albums, and I have almost a thousand Cds.
The original song didn't succeed and was covered many times over the years and none charted. Finally, it worked in the 80s with this version. The repeating DING DING synth really does take it up a notch
The 80s were all about the dance clubs, man, so yeah, lots of upbeat tunes heavy on the drums, perfectly suited for sweating it out on the dance floor!
Gloria Jones sang the original version. It was a big Northern Soul hit. Highly recommend giving it a listen. Northern Soul is a fantastic genre to explore.
One of their best song would be Say Hello, Wave Goodbye... and it has to be the extended 12" version with THE clarinet solo intro. Best use of clarinet in the whole damn history of pop music.... just sayin' 😂 ruclips.net/video/vdH_xOIlbbk/видео.html

Hi Jay ... my recommendation too is Marc in the song "Say Hello, Wave Goodbye" (1982) , is wonderful ... Peace ✌️😁
One of my favorite song to dance to at "Le Cargo" in Montreal, back then. Maybe it was named Cargo because it looked like a warehouse all painted in black.
"Say Hello, Wave Goodbye"....my fav Soft Cell track..especially the long version with the Oboe solo....beautiful.
Oh wow, and just like that, it's 1982. No wonder I feel lighter and my hair is restored.
Can you please listen to our house by madness
Up until last month I thought this was the original. Gloria Jones did the original in 1964🤯and it is amazing, especially considering the time period. That being said, this then becomes one of my favorite covers.
You should still check out Marilyn Manson version too, though.
The Gloria Jones original was huge on the Northern South scene..Marc Almond was ito Northern Soul and that is where he heard it first.
I danced like crazy in clubs on this tune in my 18-20 years... This was a huge hit.
The original version of this was song by Gloria Jones who was married to mark bolan who was a pop star in the 70s,it was a big hit on the northern soul seen in the seventies played at the Wigan casino , mark was the lead singer of Trex pop group, they were a glam rock band
Gloria Jones originally did it in the 60's, that s a nice version too
My brother had the album and played it when I visited him.
You should see the Official video. It adds a new dimension to the lyrics. It's disturbing, but one of the most memorable videos ever shown on MTV.
Benjamin Orr (The Cars) wasn't a one hit wonder but he had one solo hit with "Stay the Night" from The Lace (1986)
Once I run to you...now I run from you...🤣🤣🤣🤣. Run away from those relationships.
Well worth listening to the original 1964 version by Gloria Jones ( Marc Bolan's girlfriend and mother of Rolan Bolan )
One of them tune's that gets in your head. Peace
Burt Bacharach & Hal David wrote this song in the early 60's. Those guys were genius songwriters. I've always loved up tempo heartbreak songs.
Wow, you're doing all the great one-hit wonders!
Awesome 80s song got everyone up dancing
Gloria Jones sang the original version. It was a big Northern Soul hit. Highly recommend giving it a listen. Northern Soul is a fantastic genre to explore.
years around the sun - Miles Away and the summer we raised you! excellent songs
Side note: Beldar sang this when he was narfelling the Garthog in " The Coneheads" movie.😀
How can anyone give this great song a thumb down?
The Original Was A Northern Soul Classic And Was Wrote And Sung By Gloria Jones Who Was Marc Bolan Of T.Rex Girlfriend
You definitely need to play some Pretenders.
The 80’s were ruled by MTV & music videos, for better or worse.
I've always loved this song, especially that two beat "Bomp! Bomp! part. Thanks for playing. I always enjoy your commentary.
One of their best song would be Say Hello, Wave Goodbye... and it has to be the extended 12" version with THE clarinet solo intro. Best use of clarinet in the whole damn history of pop music.... just sayin' 😂

Without a doubt!!! I even made a clip of the solo, so haunting, and yearning.
Another Soft Cell track to check out is “Chips On My Shoulder.” High energy track. Can’t imagine you wouldn’t enjoy it.
Here in the UK this was no 1 and not an OHW. They had a string of hits here and in europe through the early eighties. Bedsitter - Say Hello,Wave Goodbye - Torch and others as well as one platinum and two gold albums. If you like eighties try Yaz(oo) Don't Go - Midnight or some of the singer Alison Moyet's solo stuff - All Cried Out - Is This Love - Love Resurrection you won't be disappointed.
Fantastic artist. Amazing duo. Vocals and synths 😎
