    This is a cover of a 1964 song by the American soul singer Gloria Jones, whose original version was released as the B-side of her single "My Bad Boy's Comin' Home."
    The song is about a toxic relationship, with the singer realizing he's got to leave it. "I love you though you hurt me so," he sings, as he struggles to move on.
    The song's writer, Ed Cobb, told Blender magazine: "I had a lover for whom you could say wasn't a good individual. I tried to go into her head and write a song from her standpoint. Once the word 'tainted' had popped into my head, the song was written very quickly, probably 15 minutes."
    As AIDS began to spread, this song took on new meaning. Marc Almond said: "It was the first time we'd heard about this then-unnamed disease that was affecting gay men in America. It wasn't an intentional tie-in, but as the record hit the American charts, it took on this other meaning."

      @@philobeddoe8342 Agreed Philo!
      Soft Cell's version was the 'original' to me, as I was in high school when it came out, & I had no idea it was a cover, until much later.
      My favorite version is Marilyn Manson"s cover, mainly because I'm a long time metalhead, & MM's version was more metal than the previous versions.
      ...Good to see ya in the comments Philo!

    New Wave suggestions;
    A good one would be "Black Coffee in Bed" by Squeeze.
    For a more weird song, I would say, "Whip It" by Devo, or perhaps "I Ran" by Flock of Seagulls.

    So many people have covered this song!
    My favorite is from Marilyn Manson!
    Though it's not as good as "Sweet Dreams," but damn, when Manson covers a song, he usually makes it a banger!

    Check out Howard Jones "What is Love" 13mil views & "Things Can Only Get Better" 14mil views. Mid 80's techno-rock, keyboard oriented, slightly heavier & more complex than most pop music. Best way to put it is that rock stations would play this but shy away from Soft Cell. They were pretty much on the stations with Boy George & George Michael. LOL Our band played What is Love in the 80's all the time at the Al Rosa Villa (Yeah, the same stage Dimebag Daryl was shot on) and everybody loved it!

    For anyone who's interested, these are the facts of this song. It was written by Ed Cobb in the 60s and was originally sung by Gloria Jones (the partner of T-Rex's Marc Bolan) In the early 80s it was covered by English alternative synth-pop duo Soft Cell, and later again by Marilyn Manson and others.
    Soft Cell's 1981 version is the most well-known version recorded, hence the common misconception that singer-songwriter Marc Almond wrote it. Since the early 80s, it's been a dance club staple, especially the kick-ass extended version!
    It is NOT about either AIDS or the tragic death of Marc BOLAN! As far as the lyrics go there's no great mystery. The song is sung from the POV of a guy who's in a toxic - or "tainted" - relationship with another person who is emotionally and physically stringing them along. So although he truly loves the other person, he eventually makes the difficult decision to leave knowing that his own needs will never be met.

    Disco evoloed into New Wave???? That is hilarious, who told you that? New Wave came out of the Punk Movement and like other Genres that evolved out of Punk, started to include elements of different genres. This could be Disco, Pop, Glam, Funk, Jazz, Noise, Electronic Music or even Tribal Music. Punk was a fresh start with basic Rock 'n Roll, but inspired other Genres lke New Wave, Gothic, Industrial and many many others. New Wave was the more poppier sibling of Punk. Soft cell were part of the new british electronic music like Human League, BEF, OMD, Depeche Mode, Fad Gadget etc.

I wouldn't read into the clap thing, other than it goes with the handclaps in the song. I think you should react to their recorded version, this one is terrible, and it doesn't sound as good as the record, they don't do the CLAPPINF on the record, they use another sound that is done BY A keyboard which sounds NOTHING like clapping. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE RECORD. This just sounds like it's missing something. It doesn't do the song justice. He is NOT talking about getting "clap" from this girl. He is only clapping to take the place of the instrument they are missing that is on the record. It is just about a toxic relationship, By the way the real MUSIC VIDEO that was always on MTV, is LIKE the record and NO ONE is clapping on it.
