Two things ; 1) this is an entirely different recording from that version,it's from 1991 for their greatest hits album, not the '81 version.
      2) the version you'll talking about is the 12" version which segues into 'Where Did Our Love Go' (although there was a radio edit as well) which did not have an accompanying promo video. The original 1981 7" single version & this 1991 single version DO NOT have the segue way into 'Where Did' etc.

This song is a great example of what covers should be. Soft Cell was not copying Gloria Jones's 1964 version of the song. In their 1981 version, they brought themselves to it and created a nice update that is well played, well arranged, and well recorded. It is not my style of music, but I appreciate what they did with the song. The song was also done in 1989 by Impedance. They created their own version that was different, well done, but not my cup of tea. You reacted to the Marilyn Manson version of it a few days ago. It was recorded in 2001, and is for me the best version of the song. Manson made it completely different when he moved it into the metal genre. Hard rock and metal is what I like, so its no surprise I think his is the best. This song demonstrates how I believe covers should be handled. They are covers, not copies of the original. We don't need copies, we need a fresh interpretation of older songs. Some newer bands seem to think copying the original song note for note is the way to go. If they don't intend to modify it in any way, they shouldn't bother. If I want to hear the original, I listen to it, not a copy of it.
Deep Purple's first hit song, "Hush", is a cover of the Billy Joe Royal song from 1967, written by Joe South. The DP version is a great cover. I suggest you give it a try, if you haven't already done that one.

This song came out (at least in the US) around the same time as Human League's Don't You Want Me, so those songs are linked in my head. I don't think they had any other hits in the US, at least I never heard them. I am not surprised that they had more hits in the UK. It is kind of common for foreign bands to have one song break through, and then not have the later songs do so as well.
One of the oddest in that regard is the Dutch band Golden Earring that had a hit in the 70's another in the 80's and a smaller one in the 90's. I assume they had other hits in the Netherlands between them. But they could only break through here once a decade.

I believe the OG video was hid away because Marc got accusations of being a pedophile and they didn’t want to remind people of it again

@@square_kirby7852 I’m not sure why the original video has anything to do with that,he is just playing a part. In those Roman times there were some distasteful things happening.

Now you have to react to the original by Gloria Jones from 1964..

Great react! This song was HUGE when it came out, I was in Grade 7 in Toronto and every kid loved this racy song. The extended version had a great second section where they covered "Where did our love go?" by The Supremes and it really works!
The only other hit they had was "Sex Dwarf" which is demented and catchy. "Luring disco dollies to a life of vice..."

The only other hit in Canada maybe! They were (and still are) massive in the UK. 4 more top 5 hits in the year following Tainted Love, followed by another 7 top 40 hits. Also 10 albums (5 reaching top 10). They were THE backdrop to my teens. There was also Marc and the Mambas (an offshoot project) and Marc Almond as a solo artist (who can forget the duet with Gene Pitney!). He is still producing singles to this day. In fact, Soft Cell have just released a new single in collaboration with the Pet Shop Boys - Purple Zone, ahead of their new album. Sex Dwarf was amazing, I agree, although strangely never released as a single in the UK - it was on the Non Stop Erotic Cabaret album.

Yes,this song was huge but it reminds of the movie "Cone Heads" the high school girls in back seat screaming and singing to this song.

    Try their song 'Sex Dwarfs'.
Also try the singer Marc Almond's duet with Gene Pitney on a cover of Gene's song 'Something's Gotten Hold Of My Heart'.

Check out Sex Dwarf (live) by Soft Cell. It's probably too perverted for your ch. but worth taking a look at for fun.

I guess I'm used to the extended version because this doesn't sound like the original version they released. It's like they re-recorded a version that for an anniversary edition or something and then changed the audio for this video. This one is better...ruclips.net/video/3p2lUqekJXU/видео.html
