I am 45 years old and I always focus on the lyrics and the combination of resonances, an approach a little different from most musical authors. Angelina is the first singer in my life that I have heard who understands that the true purpose of the musician is to transmit a written song and nothing else. This also happens to me when listening to Dimash who is a being from another planet: Dimash also does not understand the ultimate purpose of transmitting a song. Angelina does something unique in the history of music: in addition to transmitting a written song, Angelina transmits that song to each viewer, one by one, notice each time she sings she closes her eyes, opens, stares and then closes them. Just a Mozart, a Beethoven and now an Angelina Jordan, thank you God.
Angelina is one of the most effortless singers I have ever seen. It's nice to get a technical analysis that shows everyone that "effortless" and "easy" are not the same thing. She can make some very difficult techniques and make it sound like it's as easy as breathing. She also does it in such an 'organic' way. It's never "too much". It's always just right. It's just one of the things that make her awesome. I really enjoyed your reaction/review this time. Hope to see you look at more Angelina in the future.
Rusty Shackleford, have you ever noticed that when she finished the song and she smiles at the audience, she gives just a little, almost imperceptible, chuckle, which the microphone picks up? I think that is so darling and "knowing" of her that she was satisfied. She's just precious and destined for, I believe, an Elvis-level future!
That's a nice distinction. I always thought effortless meant easy and so I was uncomfortable with the description because I thought it didn't give credit to all the work that goes behind the performance. Understanding effortless as meaning "unstrained" rather than easy really helps.
Thanks for your reaction! She is only 17 years old today and from Norway. She signed with the label Republic Records just 14 years old, I think we can safely leave the promotion to Republic Record. Marketing will start when her full album is released later this year. There's only one EP with 6 songs she's released from RR now, and they haven't started marketing until the full album is released!. Republic Records know 100% what they are doing? I think a lot of people don't realize how much Angelina has done in her short life (17). FIFA song - She performed in front of 40 000 people only 11 years old invited by Norah Jones. She was also specially invited by Quincy Jones to perform on his 85th birthday in the O2 arena / London. And so on goes the list... She has over 250 songs on RUclips with cover songs and many originals. Angelina also plays piano and guitar. The truth is that within a year or two she will be the artist for the big occasions. and not a "bare belly plastic artist" who tops a list for a week and is forgotten just as quickly. She already eats most female vocalists for breakfast, and the label Republic Records and the rest of the music industry know that too! Angelina Jordan has nothing to prove. When she sometimes belts is it because the fits in the performances. She sings to us only she can!

OMG! I can't believe anyone is telling you not to react to videos that you, well, react to. Your analyses are very informative and interesting. You stop at all the appropriate places to point out how AWESOME the performers are, which is what you actually advertise in your descriptions. The vast majority of Angelina Jordan fans come across as quite respectful and appreciative. However, I once posted that a few Angelina Jordan fans are tough on reactors and that was met with an immediate reply that "no we are not," kind of proving my point. I really appreciated your review, Dr. Marc! Not only about how Angelina effortlessly "manages" her voice, tone, runs, placements but also as her as a person. She never uses any gimmicks or tricks when she performs. It's just her, her voice and the music. Nothing else is needed because she is a natural storyteller where words take a significant meaning. Elton Johns favorite color is yellow and paying respect to the original artists is really her thing. I think that is all that's about the dress. Never seen her in yellow before. I love her warm tone in this song. She's done so many brilliant brilliant performances with very different sound than the AGT ones. It's a shame some people only notice those three AGT performances and miss that treasore trove of 130+ songs.
Todd S It’s a bitter, gay, love break-up. A young inexperienced man from the country (likely from Texas, or the American South, where the “horny-backed toad” was a common creature) working as an urban hustler, has been taken on by an older gay man… who has been treating him like his “kept boy” in a luxurious penthouse. But the relationship has become imbalanced, with the older man demeaningly using the younger man just for sex. The song’s lyric is an epistolary one: which is to say, it is the letter being read aloud that the younger man has written, to say goodbye to the old drunk, high on something at the time, who has been his sugardaddy. The letter is bitter and venomous, a passive-aggressively worded “F*** you”. Even “mongrels who ain’t got a penny” hold this kind of poncey older rich man in contempt (“titbits like you, on the ground”). He won’t be missed for long, because there are “plenty like me to be found.” The young man says he no longer wants to walk along the Yellow Brick Road… (an allusion to Judy Garland and her iconic status in the gay male community, and implies that the gay male world is full of booze-fueled fantasy and wishful thinking). He’s going back to the working-class countryside (“my plow”) where he’s from… It’s implied that the young man was never enthusiastically gay in the first place (ie., he was “gay for pay”). Is the young man possibly black? (“singing the blues”). Now, re-listen to the whole song again, this time considering this dramatic scenario. Interesting, of course, that Sir Elton is gay, and spent many years of his life denying and camouflaging it, including the 1970’s, when this was written.
I'm a voice teacher. I REALLY appreciate your analysis and descriptions. It's rare to find voice teachers that understand and talk about shapes and colors (as I do). I spend a majority of my lessons teaching how to do these different sounds and how having control of the instrument in these different capacities/,colors makes it possible for you to make many different choices for different emotions and ideas in the song. I appreciate your expert analysis, Dr. Marc. There are so many technically masterful singers that seem to gratify many, but whose vocal gymnastics do nothing to help the song. Angelina is so different and rare, and what she does with her voice is entirely at the service of the song. She only does what she thinks is needed to help convey the meaning and emotion of the song. Here's some things about Angelina Jordan. Uncle did much of the deal with the everything on AGT. Family made sure that they signed a release not to be bound by Simon and AGT company. Now she signed up with Republic records. Dozens of more big companies privately flew over to Norway to get public records to go with them and of course they refused. Now going younger. She wrote her first book already published and that explains about her bare feet and she makes her own clothes and writes music. Also she's really good at playing the piano. There's video of her actually playing while singing. When she was I don't know what age 5 years old or so she started singing at 1 and a half. She met this little girl. I don't know down the street or somewhere and had no shoes on so she gave the little girl her shoes even though she refused many times the little girl wound up receiving Angelina's shoes. The little girl said Thank you there beautiful. Now she will not sing with shoes on until every child has a pair of shoes. Now she is paired up with the foundation for children to have food clothes and shoes until then she's not going to wear shoes when she sings unless it's really cold outside. So that a little just of it and you're right she does have great parents and some of the videos the brown haired guy wearing the glasses is her father that plays the guitar. Her mother is very beautiful and free and outgoing looks like she gets that from her. Also they never leave her side when she goes to entertain for protection when she was young I don't know if they have security now probably now yeah. Well that's what I read up till now.

Every time I hear Angelina sing, I picture her stepping out of an old black & white movie, to transport us back in time, so we can fall in love with these genuine masterpieces again ❤️ 💚 💙 💜 Great reaction!!! A little backstory, for some of your subscribers who may not know......Angelina's Grandmother loved Blues & Jazz music, & they used to listen to it all the time, & Angelina felt an immediate connection, so her younger style tipped the scale closer to Jazz, and as she ages, she has developed many other styles of music, including her own,& now can sing almost anything!!! She also sews most of her outfits, does all her own musical arrangements, & goes barefoot, because she met a young girl when performing one day, who had no shoes & could not afford to buy any, so Angelina gave her the shoes she had on, & in memory of the girl, & poverty issues, she continues to goes barefoot! What can I say, except this young girl, is an inspiration, an amazing talent, has a huge compassionate heart, & the world is a much nicer place to be, with her in it !!!

Amazing analysis, the one that we just cannot find elsewere on RUclips. You covered, as usual, all the main points, Dr. Marc, but, here, your insistance on the colors of her voice matching the colors of the words is absolutely fabulous. Highlighting phonetically by her artistic pronounciation some of the words of the lyrics in order to powerfully convey emotions is key in Angelina's vocal arsenal. And then, when you make us realize that some of the words she sings, like here the word road, is phonetically raaaaaod, you nailed it. It is exactly what she does in some songs, mainly in It's A Man's World. Alas, you let an artistic gem that she showcases go unnoticed. It is what Angelina does from 7:14 to 7:19 : she imitates the sound that an owel does in the woods and she ends the mimicking by pronouncing gently the word owl! That is genius! It's been a minute since you reacted to Angelina. Glad you're back for this. I appreciate your knowledge and analysis. You did miss a fun part of the performance after that nice long note. Your perception of Angelina parallels mine. I think that's one reason she draws us in. She has said that when she sings she goes to a magical place. She allows us to see/feel some of that world through her voice and stage presence. She exudes confidence (since she was7) and that enhances our comfort. Hope it won't be as long before you check out another Angelina song. Her last AGT performance, Someone You Loved, is really nice (it is a little difficult to fully appreciate because there is a visual artist on stage as well which can distract). I think Bohemian gave her more to work with. She said when she was maybe 8 that singing was as important as breathing to her. She does what she loves. She inhabits each song (though her choices were limited by AGT). She's humble too.

It makes your reviews special as it is not "great, man!" and "wow", as many others. Although, some say that and then provide some reason why.

You may be interested to know that Angelina has just signed with Republic Records as their number one priority new artist! She had previous turned down dozens of the biggest people in the industry. This is a huge landmark and we all knew it was coming eventually. This label also has Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Ariana grande, Jonas Brothers and more. We hear that she is signing on her own terms hopefully meaning a good deal of freedom.
You can see her sing Gloomy Sunday at 7 years old when she auditioned for “Norway’s got talent “. Probably one of her first performances in front of a big audience and she was so relaxed even backstage waiting to sing.
@@DrMarcReynolds I am sorry to hop on the back of someone else's evaluation. But, I want to throw you another young singer from Kazakhstan, Daneliya Tuleshova. She has just turned 14, same as Angelina, and has just had her audition on AGT. She is another singer whose vocals are the important part of any of her performances. Her ability to convey emotions is like that of only one other singer I know, Angelina Jordan. They get there in two different ways, but you have a lot of the same emotional upheaval at the end of a song. While Angelina is a tall and graceful and beautiful young woman, Daneliya is a small and graceful and very beautiful young woman. Daneliya's voice is about power and can if necessary blow you out of the concert hall. But it is her way of also handling the delicate notes with the deftness and precision of a brain surgeon. Angelina on the other hand is kind of soft and breathy but can put her foot in it and stun you with the strength of voice you might not expect. I have yet to make it through any of their songs without crying. It is a quirk of my brain, some people get goosebumps, I cry, I would have much rather had the goosebumps. Anyway back to Daneliya if you could react to a song I detested until she sang it, 'Shallow' by Gaga. I am not a fan of Gaga, I am a fan of her songwriting. Daneliya just nails it. If you want a different song, 'Bored' by Billie Eilish she kills that one too. The reason for not wanting you to react to her audition song is the audience was so loud that she had to sing at full volume to be heard. She is a much better singer than that. I wanted you to hear her musical instincts for a song. Anyway, since I am barely literate in language, so forget about the computer and dropping you a link, That makes me think of breakfast, I piggy back on one of your replies because I think it comes with an announcement so you will at lest be aware of it. She is worth your trouble. Marc while I think you do a great job of describing the singing, you sound very much like so many other "Pros" in that you feel obligated to describe all the technical details. I don't think Angelina thinks about any of that at all! She has a God given talent and she knows how to use it. I'm sure she experiments and and has someone helping her, but she was doing the same things when she was 5, 6,7!! As her instrument matures she will get even better, naturally! Everything she does seems so effortless. She really knows what she is doing. She stays within her comfort zone and doesn't try to push things. And she uses different voices to sing different songs to get what she wants the listener to hear. Such an amazing talent!!

OMG! I can't believe anyone is telling you not to react to videos that you, well, react to. Your analyses are very informative and interesting. You stop at all the appropriate places to point out how AWESOME the performers are, which is what you actually advertise in your descriptions. The vast majority of Angelina Jordan fans come across as quite respectful and appreciative. However, I once posted that a few Angelina Jordan fans are tough on reactors and that was met with an immediate reply that "no we are not," kind of proving my point. I really appreciated your review, Dr. Marc! Not only about how Angelina effortlessly "manages" her voice, tone, runs, placements but also as her as a person. She never uses any gimmicks or tricks when she performs. It's just her, her voice and the music. Nothing else is needed because she is a natural storyteller where words take a significant meaning.

I love her warm tone in this song. She's done so many brilliant brilliant performances with very different sound than the AGT ones. It's a shame some people only notice those three AGT performances and miss that treasore trove of 130+ songs.

Todd S It’s a bitter, gay, love break-up. A young inexperienced man from the country (likely from Texas, or the American South, where the “horny-backed toad” was a common creature) working as an urban hustler, has been taken on by an older gay man… who has been treating him like his “kept boy” in a luxurious penthouse.
But the relationship has become imbalanced, with the older man demeaningly using the younger man just for sex.
The song’s lyric is an epistolary one: which is to say, it is the letter being read aloud that the younger man has written, to say goodbye to the old drunk, high on something at the time, who has been his sugardaddy. The letter is bitter and venomous, a passive-aggressively worded “F*** you”. Even “mongrels who ain’t got a penny” hold this kind of poncey older rich man in contempt (“titbits like you, on the ground”). He won’t be missed for long, because there are “plenty like me to be found.”
The young man says he no longer wants to walk along the Yellow Brick Road… (an allusion to Judy Garland and her iconic status in the gay male community, and implies that the gay male world is full of booze-fueled fantasy and wishful thinking). He’s going back to the working-class countryside (“my plow”) where he’s from… It’s implied that the young man was never enthusiastically gay in the first place (ie., he was “gay for pay”). Is the young man possibly black? (“singing the blues”).
Now, re-listen to the whole song again, this time considering this dramatic scenario.
Interesting, of course, that Sir Elton is gay, and spent many years of his life denying and camouflaging it, including the 1970’s, when this was written.
I'm a voice teacher. I REALLY appreciate your analysis and descriptions. It's rare to find voice teachers that understand and talk about shapes and colors (as I do). I spend a majority of my lessons teaching how to do these different sounds and how having control of the instrument in these different capacities/,colors makes it possible for you to make many different choices for different emotions and ideas in the song. Thanks for doing this. It's fun. And I relate.
I appreciate your expert analysis, Dr. Marc. There are so many technically masterful singers that seem to gratify many, but whose vocal gymnastics do nothing to help the song. Angelina is so different and rare, and what she does with her voice is entirely at the service of the song. She only does what she thinks is needed to help convey the meaning and emotion of the song. Unnecessary embellishments are just clutter.

Here's some things about Angelina Jordan. Uncle did much of the deal with the everything on AGT. Family made sure that they signed a release not to be bound by Simon and AGT company. Now she signed up with Republic records. Dozens of more big companies privately flew over to Norway to get public records to go with them and of course they refused. Now going younger. She wrote her first book already published and that explains about her bare feet and she makes her own clothes and writes music. Also she's really good at playing the piano. There's video of her actually playing while singing. When she was I don't know what age 5 years old or so she started singing at 1 and a half. She met this little girl. I don't know down the street or somewhere and had no shoes on so she gave the little girl her shoes even though she refused many times the little girl wound up receiving Angelina's shoes. The little girl said Thank you there beautiful. Now she will not sing with shoes on until every child has a pair of shoes. Now she is paired up with the foundation for children to have food clothes and shoes until then she's not going to wear shoes when she sings unless it's really cold outside. So that a little just of it and you're right she does have great parents and some of the videos the brown haired guy wearing the glasses is her father that plays the guitar. Her mother is very beautiful and free and outgoing looks like she gets that from her. Also they never leave her side when she goes to entertain for protection when she was young I don't know if they have security now probably now yeah. Well that's what I read up till now.

She also sews most of her outfits, does all her own musical arrangements, & goes barefoot, because she met a young girl when performing one day, who had no shoes & could not afford to buy any, so Angelina gave her the shoes she had on, & in memory of the girl, & poverty issues, she continues to goes barefoot! What can I say, except this young girl, is an inspiration, an amazing talent, has a huge compassionate heart, & the world is a much nicer place to be, with her in it !!!

You covered, as usual, all the main points, Dr. Marc, but, here, your insistance on the colors of her voice matching the colors of the words is absolutely fabulous. Highlighting phonetically by her artistic pronounciation some of the words of the lyrics in order to powerfully convey emotions is key in Angelina's vocal arsenal.
And then, when you make us realize that some of the words she sings, like here the word road, is phonetically raaaaaod, you nailed it. It is exactly what she does in some songs, mainly in It's A Man's World.
Alas, you let an artistic gem that she showcases go unnoticed.
It is what Angelina does from 7:14 to 7:19 : she imitates the sound that an owel does in the woods and she ends the mimicking by pronouncing gently the word owl! That is genius! And the audience erupts in recognition of that artistic creativity.

It's been a minute since you reacted to Angelina. Glad you're back for this. I appreciate your knowledge and analysis. You did miss a fun part of the performance after that nice long note. Your perception of Angelina parallels mine. I think that's one reason she draws us in. She has said that when she sings she goes to a magical place. She allows us to see/feel some of that world through her voice and stage presence. She exudes confidence (since she was7) and that enhances our comfort. Hope it won't be as long before you check out another Angelina song. Her last AGT performance, Someone You Loved, is really nice (it is a little difficult to fully appreciate because there is a visual artist on stage as well which can distract). But I like all her stuff. Maybe we'll be seeing you.

I think Bohemian gave her more to work with. She said when she was maybe 8 that singing was as important as breathing to her. She does what she loves. She inhabits each song (though her choices were limited by AGT). She's humble too.
Watching this video was like watching a toddler fall into a pool filled with Piranha Fish as they leave nothing on the bones. A sad fact is Dr. Marc Reynolds, on the left side has done 8 reactions to Angelina Jordan, and in each of these he was blown away by her talent, and never had a negative thing to say. As a matter of fact, he suggested that his students watch these videos as a learning tool Let us not forget; not a single one of these 3 can name someone that they have coached that has signed with a major record label, I asked that question and did not get an answer.
Excellent. I want to explain something personal since I was 9 years old I have been composing songs. I am 45 years old and I always focus on the lyrics and the combination of resonances, an approach a little different from most musical authors. Angelina is the first singer in my life that I have heard who understands that the true purpose of the musician is to transmit a written song and nothing else. This also happens to me when listening to Dimash who is a being from another planet: Dimash also does not understand the ultimate purpose of transmitting a song. Angelina does something unique in the history of music: in addition to transmitting a written song, Angelina transmits that song to each viewer, one by one, notice each time she sings she closes her eyes, opens, stares and then closes them. Just a Mozart, a Beethoven and now an Angelina Jordan, thank you God.

It makes your reviews special as it is not "great, man!" and "wow", as many others. Although, some say that and then provide some reason why.

You may be interested to know that Angelina has just signed with Republic Records as their number one priority new artist! She had previous turned down dozens of the biggest people in the industry. This is a huge landmark and we all knew it was coming eventually. This label also has Taylor Swift, Shawn Mendes, Ariana grande, Jonas Brothers and more. We hear that she is signing on her own terms hopefully meaning a good deal of freedom.

@@DrMarcReynolds I am sorry to hop on the back of someone else's evaluation. But, I want to throw you another young singer from Kazakhstan, Daneliya Tuleshova. She has just turned 14, same as Angelina, and has just had her audition on AGT. She is another singer whose vocals are the important part of any of her performances. Her ability to convey emotions is like that of only one other singer I know, Angelina Jordan. They get there in two different ways, but you have a lot of the same emotional upheaval at the end of a song. While Angelina is a tall and graceful and beautiful young woman, Daneliya is a small and graceful and very beautiful young woman. Daneliya's voice is about power and can if necessary blow you out of the concert hall. But it is her way of also handling the delicate notes with the deftness and precision of a brain surgeon. Angelina on the other hand is kind of soft and breathy but can put her foot in it and stun you with the strength of voice you might not expect. I have yet to make it through any of their songs without crying. It is a quirk of my brain, some people get goosebumps, I cry, I would have much rather had the goosebumps.
Anyway back to Daneliya if you could react to a song I detested until she sang it, 'Shallow' by Gaga. I am not a fan of Gaga, I am a fan of her songwriting. Daneliya just nails it. If you want a different song, 'Bored' by Billie Eilish she kills that one too. The reason for not wanting you to react to her audition song is the audience was so loud that she had to sing at full volume to be heard. She is a much better singer than that. I wanted you to hear her musical instincts for a song. Anyway, since I am barely literate in language, so forget about the computer and dropping you a link, That makes me think of breakfast, I piggy back on one of your replies because I think it comes with an announcement so you will at lest be aware of it. She is worth your trouble. Because, though I love Angelina Jordan, if you put a gun to my head and forced me to choose, it would be Daneliya, provided I didn't feel like tempting fate and not answer, I get in those moods a time or a thousand. Review "Wicked Game" by Angelia Jordon. Very different, stripped down, version of a classic.
Marc while I think you do a great job of describing the singing, you sound very much like so many other "Pros" in that you feel obligated to describe all the technical details. I don't think Angelina thinks about any of that at all! She has a God given talent and she knows how to use it. I'm sure she experiments and and has someone helping her, but she was doing the same things when she was 5, 6,7!! As her instrument matures she will get even better, naturally! Everything she does seems so effortless. She really knows what she is doing. She stays within her comfort zone and doesn't try to push things. And she uses different voices to sing different songs to get what she wants the listener to hear. Such an amazing talent!!
