28 degrees C yesterday, and close to that today. No rain for weeks, and we have no idea when we’ll get some, or when the weather will turn cold again, from a blast of cold air from Canada. Not remembering what they were I composted them. So mine didn’t flower and I went and killed them about two weeks ago 🤦♀️. Great video and thanks again.
I don’t know if UK folks can use them, but across the pond we use heat pads. They are waterproof mats we plug in. You place seeds that need heat in pots or trays on top of mat, which is plugged into electric.
😂 yeah they’re used extensively here too. But just remember that hot crops need heat all through their life cycle not just for germination. So before you sow, consider where you will grow those plants until it heats up outside.
I ask also growing Rotkappchen and I also have great deal of trouble to pronounce it. Mine were sown I early Jan and are sound 10 cm tall. My idea is to put them in small pots with marigolds, quite ornamental. I am also sowing Veranda Red is also small tomatoes varieties.

Thank you so much for including flowers in your video, it's so usefull to know which seeds need heat and those that don't. I plan to grow the heat ones in my laundry room next to a radiator as I dont have an elec point in my greenhouse. The rest I can sow and leave in the greenhouse. I watched another site and they sowed echinacea, poppys and delphiniums outside in milk jugs as they need a cold period to start ? Have you tried any of these methods? I had such a bad year growing last year with my veg its made me want to have a veg rest lol and concentrate on flowers this year.
I tried the milk carton thing the other year (there's a video if you want), but I wasn't impressed at all. I spoke to a few US subscribers and they said that the idea of this method is for the types of seeds that would normally be out in the garden exposed to the cold - which kind of makes me wonder what the point is? I would just leave those ones out in the cold? But I'm very aware I maybe just don't understand it properly :D
I think there are some seeds that have to have to be chilled before they will germinate...I think this is what they are trying to achieve ..I always thought lavender had to go in the fridge before you could sow it but I may be wrong. Anyway, I will go and watch your video on that one then. BTW you are doing a great job here on you tube, you can really see you love gardening and you have a fun sense of humour about it all. These ones don’t. There are other seeds I’m holding off until late next month when it’s a bit warmer, but remember this is my greenhouse etc… you need to make a decision about your seeds. You can’t assume that your situation will be identical to some random person on youtube 😀😀😀

Fantastic video Eli, gave me a couple of ideas and now o have to get some more seeds! One question...How long do you have your vitapod grow lights on for in a day? Thank you
Hi Linda, times will depend on what plants you are growing, some plants need 12 hours daylight, some need less, so it's a case of checking how much actual daylight they are getting and then adding on the extra with the grow lights, adjusting as the days get longer/shorter.
Hi Eli..am going to sow some King of the North peppers myself this year. If I sow them indoors on a heat mat..will I be able to put the seedlings into my unheated greenhouse soon after..or do they still need to be kept indoors till later 🤗
Hi Gail, peppers are a hot crop so they need heat to germinate but will also need heat through their growing cycle, I would keep them indoors until the nights warm up, so for us that's usually late April.
If you have similar temperatures to me they should do. The current temperatures mean they will germinate and grow quite slowly, which is a good thing as the smaller plants need less than bigger more established plants where they will need warmer temperatures.
Rotkäppchen is German and means Little Red Riding Hood. It's pronounced with a long o and and an ae sound. Otherwise you were absolutely right :) Thanks for yet another informative video!
I want to grow a lot more flowers this year, and I'm really having to stop myself as the greenhouse isn't heated, and I know if I bring seed trays into the house I'll have fungus gnats all over the place. So I'm trying to be patient and do other jobs (there are SO MANY OTHER JOBS) around the garden until it warms up. I was interested to see you're sowing snapdragons - I've also got snapdragons and rudbeckia to sow. Do you think it's ok to sow them in an unheated greenhouse yet? Or should I stick to chitting potatoes?! My last frost date is mid-May. Thanks for another great video!
I grow in my house and to avoid fungus gnats I put boiling water on my potting soil, cover for an hour and use it when it’s cooled. It’s also stopped damping off.
I DT, there's a link in the description to where to get the storage boxes, and the are arranged by what Kate referred to as the Womble system .... overground, underground etc., ie by type rather than by season, lol.
It depends on the amount of sunshine Irene. If it’s sunny it can feel considerably warmer, at this time of year 4 or 5 degrees difference but if it’s not sunny or at night the temperature drops considerably as there’s nothing to heat the greenhouse, so it can sometimes even be a degree colder. That’s why I always talk about understanding what plants are hardy enough for your garden or about protection from frost
@@eliandkate I have a rhino greenhouse 3rd year now. Love it. Just subscribed to you for hints and tips. Going to try the potting compost from one of your videos this year
Foxgloves -- Try tricking them into believing this is there second year. @@eliandkate hope you get so many views you can give up work to get paid to do what your so good at and passionate about 👩🌾👏💐

@@eliandkate 👍 so are we, we have our own business supplying and fitting all new floorings 🤩
@@eliandkate I’ve sent you over a couple of photos on Instagram messenger of my foxgloves I grew in 2020 for 2021
Flowering, really thrilled with my first time of sowing and growing theses beauties hope you don’t mind me sending you the photos 😀
So behind in watching stuff and sowing stuff. Have you done and update on your overwintered peppers?
Mine are looking ok, need to pot on my other peppers from seed.
Not done an update yet cause its hard to say anything. They are just sticks lol
Will just have to see in april
@@eliandkate mine have 4-6 inches of growth on them. Keep having to remove buds from them.
Mine are maybe dead then lol
@@eliandkate I hope they are not and just having a nice sleep before blossoming.
😍😍😍😍😍
Rott kappchen is German for little red riding hood. Fun fact.
Hi Eli great video again this week
Can I ask if the flower sowing seeds
Have no form of heat what so ever
😃
These ones don’t. There are other seeds I’m holding off until late next month when it’s a bit warmer, but remember this is my greenhouse etc… you need to make a decision about your seeds. You can’t assume that your situation will be identical to some random person on youtube 😀😀😀
@@eliandkate agree Eli
I’m doing me and your doing you!!
As you often say on your channel
My green house temperature reading was 13.5 this afternoon, we do live in west Berkshire area. I’ve sown the carrots today in the root trainers 👏
Going to hold off with cosmos etc till the weekend . Happy Gardening 👩🌾
😀😀😀😀😀😀😀
You doing you
Let me know how it goes though, it’s all a bit exciting
What a great video, (they all are!) my sweet pea packet says to soak overnight is that a new system - or should you always soak sweet peas?
It's one of those things a lot folk do with big seeds like peas to speed up germinating 😃😃😃
@@eliandkate Perfect, thank you.
I am going to ask for small mini green house just to keep veggie seedlings in
Great video. Quick question, with dahlia and cosmos seedlings survive in unheated greenhouse? I’m in same frost area as you. Thanks
If you have similar temperatures to me they should do. The current temperatures mean they will germinate and grow quite slowly, which is a good thing as the smaller plants need less than bigger more established plants where they will need warmer temperatures.
@@eliandkate Thank you
Rotkäppchen is German and means Little Red Riding Hood. It's pronounced with a long o and and an ae sound. Otherwise you were absolutely right :) Thanks for yet another informative video!
Oh thank you!!!!!!!! That's awesome 👌
I totally commented the same thing. They’re super cute too! Imma need to find these seeds in the US. :)
They taste fab as well 😃😃
I want to grow a lot more flowers this year, and I'm really having to stop myself as the greenhouse isn't heated, and I know if I bring seed trays into the house I'll have fungus gnats all over the place.
It all depends on the temperatures in your greenhouse. Things tend to be fine in mine from the back end of February onwards
@@eliandkate Hoping for a more consistently warm spring this year. Will start monitoring greenhouse temps again.
Fingers crossed 🤞
@@eliandkate Very tightly!!
I grow in my house and to avoid fungus gnats I put boiling water on my potting soil, cover for an hour and use it when it’s cooled. It’s also stopped damping off.
Where did you get your seed storage system from? Are they colour coded by sowing month?
I DT, there's a link in the description to where to get the storage boxes, and the are arranged by what Kate referred to as the Womble system .... overground, underground etc., ie by type rather than by season, lol.
You have an unheated greenhouse. What is the temperature difference between inside and outside?
It depends on the amount of sunshine Irene.
If it’s sunny it can feel considerably warmer, at this time of year 4 or 5 degrees difference but if it’s not sunny or at night the temperature drops considerably as there’s nothing to heat the greenhouse, so it can sometimes even be a degree colder.
That’s why I always talk about understanding what plants are hardy enough for your garden or about protection from frost
Hi! I'm about to buy a rhino greenhouse, are you happy with yours? Thanks!
I am very happy with mine 😀
@@eliandkate I have a rhino greenhouse 3rd year now. Love it. Just subscribed to you for hints and tips. Going to try the potting compost from one of your videos this year
Glad you’re finding our channel useful Linda
Foxgloves -- Try tricking them into believing this is there second year. Don't know if it will work for foxgloves but it does work for artichokes, Put them in a cold refrigerator (below 10C / 50F but above freezing.) for about a month. If you try this. Let me (us) know the results. -- Ray Delbury USA
If it's German, Rotkakkppchen is pronounced "rort kap shen". Means little red cap.
Ohhhhh a few answers on this
Rotkäppchen is German for Red Riding Hood! X (Pronounced roat-kep-chen... not ch as in church ch as in Loch)
👍☺👍☺👍
We can not SOW ANY THING YET….Zone 5A here!
Not long. Hang in there.
Remember I'm also lucky enough to have a greenhouse and a heated propagator. Folk here without these things can't be sowing either. Hang in there. 😍😍😍
It is better to sow tomato’s half march or your plants would be too big by half may
😂 you missed all of that unfortunately
This is an old video now and was part of a whole season of growing with different methods and timings and was a great way to visually show folk what to expect.
Was a fantastic season that one 😀 can only hope this season is as good.
Hello Eli,
"Rotkäppchen" is a German word meaning nothing more than "Little Red Riding Hood".
But you can type the word into Google and listen to the correct pronunciation.
Greetings Claudia from Germany.
Thanks Claudia 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂
