Don’t Kill Your Seedlings: Potting on for Beginners
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 окт 2024
- You've spent all that time and effort germinating your little seeds and taking care of your baby plants but now is the most important time in your garden because it is so easy to kill your seedlings. Germinating the seeds is the easy part keeping those seedlings alive is the harder part. So today - potting on for beginners.
So now that we have little seedlings that are healthy, strong and growing, we need to move them on to larger modules or pots to ensure they have room, enough nutrition and enough water to help them grow into strong plants. This is relevant to vegetables and flowers alike. We call this process pricking out and potting on and I'm going to take you through it to take the fear out of gardening.
I'll also let you see how I deal with leggy seedlings, cause they happen and it's not the end of the world.

Glad your ok!!! Thanks for showing us all the uplift you can have after a disastrous start! If we were jailed for all the plants we have killed, there would be NO gardeners!😂Nice seeing you on Gardener Scott! Peace and Blessings!
🤣🤣😂🤣 very true
I’m telling y’all we need to make a custom tee shirt that says ‘GARDENER: killing plants since [year]’. Now THAT is truth in advertising! 😏
Maybe I might ha e to do that 😂🤣😂🤣
My seedlings in my little cold tray fell over in the storm eunice, not at all amused but my own fault
Oh no!!!!!! 😢😢😢
You can also use sauce squeeze bottles so that it’s subtle tip allows good flow for gentle watering early plants
Ah well now, Who has NOT done that before, many mistakes I make every year Eli so you are not alone. In todays video I revealed I knocked my last tray of sweet peas of my hanging shelf...just the first of many daft things I will do this year...I think it is a right of passage actually...Steve...😃
Oh god... so both you and me are total clutz 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Ha ha I admire your honesty. My cat lay on my first sowing of chillies.
Oh you're not the only one reporting seedling killing cats 🤣😂🤣😂
The tip about letting gravity separate your seedlings will be a savior for me because last year I lost plants from root damage when I transplanted. Thanks for another super helpful video. Cheers
Oh no 😪😪😪😪
I have always found that the Cats have excellent taste in gifts - they are so intuitive 😉 🐈⬛ 💜
😂🤣 they do.... they bought me gin this year
Thank you for being so transparent and sharing your failures. It is so encouraging to know that other gardeners fail and that it is all part of the learning process. I know I have done my share of killing seedlings. You should make a shirt that says “Stay Calm and Pot On” 🙂
🤣😂🤣😂 I tell you what.... I will
It's honestly really refreshing & reassuring to hear that someone really experienced makes those mistakes too!!
Oh Claire
We all do. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve been gardening, you can’t control everything. You just gotta take it in your stride 😍
@@eliandkate It's a good lesson in how you can't control everything, is gardening.
First time viewing this channel. Don't feel bad. My cat single handedly took out ALL my trays of seedlings one year because he was being chased by another cat and knocked ALL of them over. Mass murder. It was carnage. Had to go buy new seed packets and all of it!
Oh no!!!! I bet he didn't get any tuna that night!!!!!!
Cats are little darlings aren't they. I just commented that my cat took out my first sowings. She lay on them under the grow light!

Welcome to the channel Janet 😀
The thing about starting out early is that you can start over again when things go belly up. Good information, Eli.
Unlike last year, I have yet to start anything, but will begin with some lettuce, peas, and cauliflower this week.
That is very true and boy am I glad of it.
, Eli, I had to edit my post. I meant “can”, not “can’t”. It’s getting late here in California. I just posted about my shelf project in FB, and had to edit it four or five times. Geeze!
A good night's sleep is needed, you'll feel like a new man. We're just up and on our first coffee 😀
Off to read about your project
Keeping it real Eli 🤣 .... loved the dramatic/meltdown sections! We've all done it! My biggest embarrassment is letting out some potty-mouthed expletive within earshot of the neighbours! 😉
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Got to admit, although I use those Container Wise trays with the tiny cells (which I'm starting my second year with) for some things (some herbs, some small flowers etc.), I don't like them nearly as much as the other trays they sell - which are great! Pretty much any of their others have proved better, even the 77L tray, where the cells are theoretically the same size (3cm squares). Those cells, though they're same size on top are both a bit deeper and a lot less tapered, so each cell holds nearly twice as much compost, which makes a huge difference to how quickly they dry out and how long a seedling can stay in it before it must be potted up. (Not to mention you get an extra 17 cells in the same space.)
Thanks for your videos, btw, always look forward to them!
Yeah I'm leaning towards agreement with you. So far I'm not much of a fan of these CD60s
Will see how I go.
Because I loathe watering constantly I’m actually moving away from cells and instead I’m mass sowing in small pots. They’re 1.5x1.5x3inches (found on Amazon). It’s takes some extra time to separate them and up pot but I’m saving all that time watering. And honestly the less time I spend watering = less opportunity for me to accidentally drop them all on the ground. 😏
Oh, Eli! I love how you are so real - one of the reasons I watch your videos. ☺️
Awwwwww 😀😀😀😀
Glad you were able to turn your mistake into a learning experience for others! And that you still were able to restart more seeds!!
Fingers crossed. That was the last of the Brad's atomic!!!

When taking plants out of beginning trays, you can use a micro fork straightened so that it grabs all soil and plant for transplanting up. I do that for all my starters and it works great for pulling out selected plants
A bit like my little green fork. Same idea 😀
Thanks for all the tips again Eli. Pricking out is one of my favourite jobs! I find a chopstick very good for doing this. I've had disasters too, such as the time my plastic greenhouse took off and I lost virtually everything! Last seen flying over Gretna.Needless to say its in the greenhouse graveyard lol. Lost all my seedlings and trod on most of them trying to clear up.

I had a similar thing happen to me this year too. Dumped all of my dwarf coneflowers and ground cherries because I was in a hurry. Total nightmare.
I did want to suggest adding vermiculite to your seed soil. That’s what I do with mine (I live in arid California) and my babies are able to handle a day of missed watering because of it. Seriously, that stuff is gardeners gold in my set up!

Hi Eli, thank you for all the details In this video & so sorry about your seedlings, thanks for sharing & take care 🙂
Oh don't worry Christine. These things happen but we can bounce back
Lots of good information. Yep, think majority of us have had oops when starting and up-potting starts. I also like you pointing out when up-potting not to handle the stems, rather just lift by the leaves.
We all learn from mistakes, I know I’ve made some absolute crackers over the years
This is one of the best seedling care videos on YT! Seed start in smaller cells with high drainage, fine texture, low nutrient seed starting medium; pot up as soon as the babies look sturdy enough to handle. And DON'T panic. Even though wailing and carrying on is allowed.
But are some plants fine to start with higher nutrient medium? I noticed that the volunteer tomatoes that came up in my compost grew faster so no matter how much I babied my seed-started ones (because I knew I wanted those varieties); the volunteers now are adult plants and flowering, even though some never even made it to official beds or containers. The seed started ones are still in their potted up cells, doing well, but nothing super.
I know you have a short growing season, but do you ever start seeds straight into potting mix?
ha ha ha wailing and gnashing of teeth definitely allowed!
All of these recommendations are purely just that, just recommendations. There is absolutely nothing to say not to start your seedlings in potting mix of straight compost and I've done it loads.
These are just recommendations based on some best practice, but that's for many reasons... sometimes it's about cost, reducing waste etc as much as getting the best out of plants :D
I did the same thing this year. Bring back at the office isn’t working out for the greenhouse!!
I know!!!! Blooming work is ruining everything 😒
Yeap you girls got me again, i got my potting soil yesterday and waiting for seed trays to arrive, to start sowing without knowing a thing...
it’s called an adventure :D That’s half the fun :D
That’s most of us! Blessings!

Great video! I hate potting up seedlings! I'm going to try this year something new - starting them in 3 inch pots. Bottom 2 inches potting soil, top one inch with seed starting mix. My thought is that once they get their roots going, potting mix below will probide nutrition. Might be crazy, but that's what I love about gardening - experimenting!
Will be good to here how you get on 😀

Very interesting, thank you. Do you put the potted on plants under lights and if so how many hours a day.
It depends on the plants as to how much light they require. Worth having a wee Google for your plants if you arent sure.😀

Isn’t it awful when work interferes with gardening 👩🌾. My problem is always (almost always) fungus gnats and damping off. I have to pot on my lettuce and dreading killing the tiny babies. Thank you for sharing 🥰👩🌾🇨🇦🐝 safe ladies
I still need to do my lettuce too.... we're in this together ❤
Once you have got your seeds to germinate do you leave them in the greenhouse or carryon in the pod? I’ve put my onions and leeks in the greenhouse (unheated) once they germinated. I need space ha ha ha
It would depend on what they are and your temperatures. My tomatoes peppers and aubergines wouldn't survive in the greenhouse just now. They'll need heat and light for a few months yet
@@eliandkate yeah that is the same where I am in London. I’ve got those under lights in doors. Just going to try and leave the onions and leeks. Hopefully they don’t die. Thanks for the reply love the video 😬
Would it be ok to add a small amount of bone meal to the soil when transplanting the seedlings to new pots? May I ask where did you buy the green planting trays?
You could do if you feel you have to but fresh compost should give these little guys everything they need until it’s time to move them on.
The tray came from a local gardening supplier but you can get them online.
Its called a potting try or greenhouse tidy

I'm afraid I don't know yet Emily. This is the first year having one so will ha e to wait and see. 😍😍😍
Can you post what the temperature is when your working?
Hey Kimberly
Hmmm I can occasionally if it's relevant but I wouldn't be able to do that in every video. It would just be a bit too complicated to maintain I'm afraid. Nit sure if it would be helpful, but you could have a look at the area weather station figures for the date of the video. Here's the link www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/forecast/gcynwfb7z#?date=2022-02-07
Hi Eli, thank you for these amazing videos. I have one question if you (or anyone here) can help. I've got my tiny little onion seedlings poking themselves up out of the seedling mix. I know you said to pot them into a potting mix once they have 2 true leaves, but onions only have one floppy tentacle leaf! How do you know when to put them into their potting mix please? They are currently in 50/50 coco coir and perlite.
Now I just thought of something Melissa.
It didn't occur to me that you might be growing from seed and not sets. I don't actually have any experience of this so I'm going going to recommend you pop over to @GardenerScott he posted a video on growing onions yesterday. Tell him sent you to ask for help 🙂
Thank you, I will wander that way now :) much appreciated x
There’s also a great (old) onion video on MIGardeners channel. I think it’s from last year. He grows a flat of onions from seed and then up-pots them once they’re about 3-4” in height. I’ve done the same, though my area is terrible for onions since we go from winter straight into summer, and I couldn’t tell you if there’s a better way since mine stalled once April came. 😬 But check out his vid and join our Lives every Tuesday morning if you want. :)
This might be a silly question, but wouldn't it be easier to water them from the bottom, rather than the top, if they are so fragile?
You can do, that's what I was doing when I kicked it. but I'm just not liking it with those little module trays. Still not sure about them and can't get a consistent feel between too wet and just right yet.
I love your channel!
awwwwww thank you, that’s lovely. Have you been subscribed long? I don’t recognise the name?

And same for I I trust their advice..... do i see them actually doing that bit of gardening multiple times that season and the next

Where did you buy the green thing with the red shelving to put your soil without a big damage on the floor???
All my bits and bobs like that are listed on my webpage, there’s always a link in the video descriptions. But pretty much I either get stuff on Amazon or our local garden centre
I've got one, it's brilliant
Can I ask what do you do with your seed compost when they get potted on... I often wonder can it be used again for more seeds ? 🤔 Thanks again for sharing your highs and lows lol you must have been gutted, I've knocked seed trays over before now.
Because I'm using modules, the seed compost tends to stay on the roots so moved along with the little plant to its new home.
You could reuse but just remember to have a think about if it need sterilised again or not
@@eliandkate thank you useful to know 😊
Could you not have put some capillary matting on the bottom of the Vitopod? I have as I am about to go away for a few days.
I did think about it but wasn't sure... might do some tests 😀
@@eliandkate Well I'll let you know a week Monday how it works.
My big B@@ls up has been potting them on out of the propagator, and thinking I was doing a good thing keeping them in the conservatory, it was too cold for them, lost a lot of my Dahlias, a couple of peppers and chillies. Luckily I was heavy handed when sowing...........😂 lol I can recommend the Containerwise containers, I got some of the smaller ones but they do dry out quickly especially if on heat, the bigger ones you have I have them, they are great. One thing I have done with the smaller ones though is chop them up with a hot knife, I found that if I was sowing in the 40 cell tray with different things they all needed to come out at different times, chop them up, they are still strong
Ha ha ha I did the same thing.... there's a video of it somewhere 😀😀😀
Forgive me if this is listed but I couldn’t determine if the “double wide” humidity chamber in the back of your greenhouse is on your website. There seem to be other ones that are smaller. You are placing your seedlings in it at 13:15. Could you point me to where I can find it? Thank you!
Hey JC, it's from a company called Greenhouse Sensation here in the UK
They do a couple of sizes, with or without lights
@@eliandkate Thank you!

Hello there ! Just found you ! Subscribed 💐
Welcome aboard
Absolutely fantastic video as usual. I love your honesty. I am on my 3rd sowing of aubergine, and they are just not germintating (left in my warm bathroom). I think the seeds are dud or I am going to have a lot of Aubergines if they eventually germinate.
Your purple Pak Choi's are my goal for this year. 2020 I had a huge success, last year I had 1 puny harvest the whole year and the snails/slugs were well fed throughout the year!
With aubergines they need a lot of heat 😀😀😀
is that a heated greenhouse? do you cover up the seedlings at night in the propogators. /many thanks
Hey Chris
It's a heated propagators with lights.
So I use this the same as the heat mat and light I useed in previous years, just an upgrade. It's just for the hot crops like peppers, tomatoes and aubergines.
The other bits and bob's I have going don't need heat but they are in the greenhouse because we still have the potential for proper freezing cold nights here. This week is generally our coldest week of the year... so for those plants, if I feel the need I can cover the benches with fleece just for an extra help on a really cold night 😀
@@eliandkate thank you eli. so would i need a heat mat for mine? they are in my living room under lights. i guess the heat from our living room will be enough with grow lights right?
It kinda depends on your set up Chris. You sent the soil to be hot for germination, but maybe your living room will allow germination... might be a kittle slower is all
awesome vids keep up awesome job lass
Thanks wee yin, will do!
When i take my seedlings and repot them into the 4x1 potting compost can i reuse the seedling compost to plant other seeds
Personally I wouldn’t Betty
You risk passing problems on via things like fungus etc in that mix
I do reuse compost into my seed mix when I make batches but I sterilise it all first
So I get home from a trip and I had asked the hubby to keep things moist, but not soaked…and part of my Chamomile seedlings had damped off…ugh
Oh no.... 😪😪😪😪

You're welcome
Hi. What zone are you in ?
Hey Sandra,
I'm not actually in the zone system. I'm in Scotland in the UK and we don't use the zones here. They are primarily a US thing.
If it helps to imagine if my garden relates to yours, we get a lot of rain, it's a very wet climate here right through the year, making freezing temperatures a real problem because when everything is wet, everything freezes. We get a lot of hard frosts through autumn, winter and spring, but we don't get a lot of snow, I think because we are right on the coast. Temperature-wise, well it's not consistent. Generally, on proper cold days in winter we may be looking at minus 6C although very cold snaps occasionally happen and I've measured the temperature as minus 14C on those, but that's not common. In Summer, we average around 18C to 22C although it has steadily been climbing over the last few years and last year we had a few VERY hot days above 25C. However, we have cloud cover pretty much right through the year with only some of the hottest weeks of summer where we don't have cloud cover. I hop that helps.
These are not the seedlings you are looking for 😂😂 Edinburgh hoody is clearly the pricking out/potting on uniform! Another fabby video! 😁
A hoody was defo required… it was blooming freezing. I put the heater on!!!!!!!
Can happen to the best of us 😂 the survivors look great

So jealous - you have starts already and I’m still watching snow fall.
We've still not had a cold snap yet.... getting nervous waiting 😀😀😀
Where did u buy your greenhouse from
it's a local UK company I'm afraid. They don't ship outside the UK
