  • You guys ask questions throughout the growing year that we don't necessarily feel fit into the videos we are doing at the time. They can be anything from you guys wanting to know more about us to specifics about our particular garden and growing. So we thought we'd put them together in one fun and light-hearted video for you.
    Our soup recipe
    eliandkate.com/tomato-and-red...
    About us (how we met)
    Did you have a mutual love of gardening in the beginning
    What got you into gardening
    What is your favourite plant to eat?
    What plant would you be?
    What do you regret growing or what could you do without?
    How do you split the workload?
    What are your pet peeves (jobs you hate)?
    Why did you choose the colour for all the wood?
    Does Kate like gardening and what other hobbies does she have?
    If the garden was wiped clean, would we do anything differently?
    Where would you like to live?
    Are you self sufficient, if there was a doomsday event, could you survive?

      Don’t be disheartened
      What will survive winter and what won’t for us was something that we took a few years to learn… and it costs a small fortune.
      Have you heard of the hardiness ratings for the UK? This might help

    Oh where do I start? Peter and I met online and first met each other in person at Glasgow Central Station 😁 There just be something special about train stations, eh?? Thanks for taking my question 😊 I absolutely *loved* this video. Kate, I have to paint our fence, too but ours is a lot smaller than yours and shorter, too (otherwise, Peter would have to paint it because I'm short, too 😂). I also know what Kate means about cutting the lawn, because I enjoy it myself. We split it here because Peter helps, as well. I really enjoyed seeing you both to-ing and fro-ing - that was classic! Thanks to both of you for a great bit of fun today! 😁

    Thanks for the share Eli! Loved watching this and getting to know you both! Again love the editing on this and both of your energy.
    Oh yes i remember when we decided to plant broccoli and cauliflower many years ago, when we set up our first bed and it was like, oh boy, this sure does take up a lot of space for one single plant, you are fighting with the bugs and birds for this tiny little head! lol
    We still do sprouts though. I agree with having space not just for growing food and flowers, etc. It's nice to have an outdoor living room in the better weather days.
    Never mind the US, you should come down south in the summer! Plenty warm down here in London. Met office said we were going to have a colder winter than normal but it has been very mild again and wet. Our "snow" these days, if we are lucky is an "icing sugar" dusting not like the 2-3ft of snow we used to get as kids, where 25c was a heatwave! (And this was when i used to live further into London than we do now.)
    I would love a greenhouse in our garden but i think the high humidity where we are would cause problems.
    Anyway, all the best and take care.

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  5 месяцев назад

      :D glad you had one with this one
      Now we're actually going to be growing something this year as a test, sprouting broccoli but smaller :D - keep an eye out for that one very soon!!!!!!
      You know, we have crazy humidity here, much much higher than London (in the 90%s most of the year) and it's not an issue for a greenhouse so don't let it put you off :D
      :D I used to live in London, many moons ago - I was an East End girl for many years. I used to love it for the weather - spent almost all year in short sleeves... people thought I was barking :D

    Great video. Loved the interaction between you two. You obviously share a good sense of humour. A couple of bits to mention from it,
    - I got my patio fruit trees from Marshalls Garden and they've been great so far in big tubs.
    - I'd love an episode where you talk about your flower beds and how you plan them out for both flower types, heights and such-like, along with the way you use them to attract pollinators.
    - I bet there's a solar-powered water feature you could sit in the middle of the lawn if you really wanted.
    Can't wait to see how life blooms in the garden and how it compares to my efforts. As always, I'm winging it except when it comes to my peppers and tomatoes. About to order a veg trug for some produce outside of the greenhouse.
    Oh, and this year I'm growing San Marzano tomatoes for my pizza sauce. I wasn't impressed with the flavour of the Roma I grew last year. I'm a massive fan of cherry tomatoes though too.

    I agree with many of things you have both said in this video.
    Mowing the grass is very therapeutic and brings me joy as well. Same with trimming the junipers and tending to my garden and trees. My kids will never have to mow the grass because I won't even let them! lol
    I tried to to grow Brussel sprouts this year and they took up an entire raised bed and the return wasn't worth the space given up.
    I also just bought a 10x20x8' greenhouse that I am excited about getting set up this spring. I wish I could have gotten a bigger one, but there just wasn't enough space. It will really extend the growing season being in a 4b zone and I look forward to having an extra month or so for my tomatoes.

    Fab and fun, really enjoyed this video. thanks for all what you do for us. I also grow food in my back garden but I totally get that you need a garden to be multi functional. I have different spaces that have their different uses, a patio for sitting, having breakfast or entertaining. A shady corner that's nice to sit in to read a book on really hot days. Ornamental plant and bird feeding area with a bird bath that is purely for striking plants, and flowers to enjoy the local nature, a lawn, shed and greenhouse which is my happy place all year round. This year I'm planning for a BBQ / Cooking bar area. My garden is my therapy. Apart from when the weather is bad I'm always in the garden.

    This made me smile a lot!
    The key point being grow what brings you joy (be it food, lawn, flowers or a combination!). It reminds me of one time I was chatting with my neighbour and going on about all my vegetables, she seemed to feel pressured to grow more veg but plainly stated she gets more joy in flowers. So I took the opportunity to say she should plant what brings her the most pleasure because I didn’t want my enthusiasm to be the cause of additional stress for someone else!
    I totally get the whole neighbours are good but maybe more space in between. Generally we get on with our neighbours but I do dream of having a bit more space in between. Although it’s nice right now cause my hubby works away a lot. We have a long skinny property and at the moment it can be a bit more peaceful in the backyard. 🥂

    Love this! And great to hear Kate's answers as well - greetings from one 'Oook' to another! :) As far as soft fruit trees go, it is tricky. I've donated the sunniest spot in the greenhouse to a small lemon tree, and am amazed and delighted that it's actually producing fruit in the unheated greenhouse. I got a bit carried away last week and ordered a mandarin as well. As for water features, you could have a very small one, in a bowl, with a solar pump, maybe? It would still give that moving water effect.... The pizza and soup looks amazing. And a huge yes to the garden being a space that is beautiful and productive but also doesn't have to be perfect, and as long as it's making you happy and helping your mental health, that's the most important thing (same for sharing on social media - it has to be on your terms, not anyone else's). Thank you for sharing all of this, I really enjoyed it!

    • @eliandkate
      @eliandkate  2 года назад +1

      Hmmmm. We’re getting a lot of mentions of the columnar trees or patio trees I think I called them but as we mentioned the problem is that we don’t actually have anywhere to grow them. Fruit trees need sun and all our spaces which actually get sun are in use. We have a huge patio but unfortunately it’s in shade for the majority of the time 😢😢😢

    • @alicemcilroy8805
      @alicemcilroy8805 2 года назад

      Mmm, that does make it more tricky. They say pears and plums don't mind partial shade. I have two columnar pears in pots in partial shade - but no fruit yet, so can't recommend it, though my columnar apple tree also in partial shade had its first fruit last year. Unfortunately our daily visitors, a muntjak deer and its fawn, didn't give us the chance to see how sweet it got.
