- R&B singer Al Wilson, best-known for "The Snake" (1968) and the #1 hit "Show and Tell" (1973), covers Creedence's "Lodi". In the words of Steve Simels:
"For this remake, Wilson and producer Johnny Rivers replaced the original's rueful melancholy with something approaching desperation, with an appropriately kickass blues/soul backing track to match.
"I've been trying to find out who played the aforementioned guitars for years ...
Given that it was recorded in L.A., my guess is that one of the players is either Ry Cooder or Canned Heat's Alan Wilson (no relation to the singer), who were to my knowledge the only hotshit slide guys doing session work in those days. It's also conceivable that it was Jackson Browne collaborator Jesse Ed Davis (of "Doctor My Eyes" fame), who I believe may have been working in town around then, and I'm also told that the late Jerry Cole (who played rhythm on the original "Mr. Tambourine Man") played slide on sessions from time to time."

I was in a band that worked in a club in San Bernideno, CA. Al owed the club owner some money and would come in every couple of weeks and put on a show to pay off the debt. The recording doesn't do him justice. He could sing his ass off and we loved backing him up. Plus, he was a great guy! When "Show and Tell" came out our paths crossed again. He remembered those nights in San Berdo and us. He was a great talent. I'm proud to have been his friend.
Jerry Field
Jerry Field, I have heard Al Wilson was a great guy to know and had people in fits of laughter with the jokes he'd tell.
I'm sure you did good in your carrier too I hope. It's good you cross paths in that year Show and Tell, because that would mean a decade or so you both connected.
WOW!! After 40 years you remember how much you liked it but you forget it's BRILLIANT. Thanks!
A great version of Lodi!!
Thanks for those who remember him. As with most artists, he was better live than on recordings. The MAN could put on a show!
First time discovering this 'cover'; man does it ever work!! Way to go Al and crew.
A Fogerty classic covered with soul!🙏
Wilson's recording was the first I heard of Lodi back in '69 on FM radio. I didn't know Fogerty had written it or that CCR had recorded it until a few years later. A few minutes ago I was listening to the CCR version and even though I hadn't heard anything by Wilson in 47 years, his name popped into my head. Glad to find out here that Johnny Rivers produced this.
Love this version!
I've got this 45. This still sounds great.
Great version of this classic.
I flat out LOVE this...Al Wilson was hot as fire..
Love this Al Wilson version. All the right indredients here,

When I was young I got stuck in Lodi miss you
Perfect as always a voice from god
I remember KFRC playing this in 1969. Dynamite record. Still love it.

Great rendition!! Love the slide guitar! Al was and still is a singer's singer!
Isn't that Ry Cooder on slide?
Tear it up Al!!
this is a great cover, took me 55 years to find it.....oh lord stuck in lodi again......great
man he's feeling every word of this. awesome
this song rocks!
Dang, this is hot!
Great is great No matter who does it if its great. Great is great thats why the Dead are Greatfull! Long live R-a-B Soul R-a-B Rock & N/S Country/Soul/R&R couldn't drive 325Kyr w/o my Babe who carries the load.Woody w/h loved dat it's alive, We met JC$-long time gone,We met in a bar in Jackson shared a moment of sobrity, I write 65 yr into a short life, its the pain of what weve learned but cant pass 2 the young because we don't know how to. that hurts!
I love this site!
This is THE jam.
Whoever dissed the horns is out to lunch. It makes the song, along with the slide, the arrangement and of course Al Wilson. FYI. John Fogerty said this is the best cover of any CCR song and I totally agree. And unlike the Credence character, you just KNOW this guy made it out of Lodi..and didn't end up selling insurance
I wish the horns were slightly higher in the mix
Johnny Rivers produced and played on it with part of Johnny Otis's band..
dig the horns too, good crossover sound.
On this day in 1969 {August 17th} Al Wilson's covered version of "Lodi" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #83; eventually it peaked at #67 and spent 7 weeks on the Top 100...
Earlier in 1969 on May 18th Creedence Clearwater Revival's original version of the song peaked at #52 on the Top 100...
After "Lodi" Al Wilson released six singles and none of them made the Top 100, then on October 14th, 1973 his "Show and Tell" entered the chart at #96 and on January 13th, 1974 it peaked at #1 {for 1 week}...
R.I.P. Allen Lamar 'Al' Wilson {1939 - 2008}...
Note: There are 14 states with a city, town, or village named Lodi; Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, & Wisconsin...
sauquoit13456 THANK YOU for honoring this CELESTIAL. ROCK ON, AL WILSON :-D !!!
His voice very close to Fogerty's
AL WILSON DIED IN 2008 R.I.P.
I like this just as much as the original
sounds beautiful
So good.
I would say it is Jesse on both, rythm and slide. On his Ululu album, the song Oh Susannah has very similar phrasing. Thanks for posting.
Excelente interpretação, muita disposição e verve no canto, gostei.maneco -RGS.
Fogerty !!! est surement fier d'entendre une version comme celle - ci !! ouhhhhhhh!!!
Killer vox
Al Wilson (June 19, 1939 - April 21, 2008)
Jesse Ed !
This has energy and presence that the CCR version lacks, truth is beauty, beauty is truth Just perfect!
nice...
rockier than the CCR version
true
목소리가 너무매력적이네요
searching lodi covers... How have I not seen this before? love it.. chris Cornell did a good cover of a "who'll stop the rain" ..Tesla does Lodi..not half as good as this(my opinion )..I just love the different energy he gives in this
sagol brat
After the CCR break up, Tom Fogerty did a couples show and his version of LODI is similar to this one !
Ry Cooder is without a doubt playing slide. That part from 1:19 to 1:36 is so Ry.
Tom Thumb While I think you may well be right, there is another possibility as to who plays the great slide parts on this: Jesse Ed Davis. Some of the phrasing sounds quite a bit like his.
+Ernst Blofeld It is Ry, I've known him since 1965, and I remember when he cut this. I bought the single when it came out.
+Herb Steiner Many thanks for this Herb. Listening to this part on the Wilson record and its tone again, I hear that it must be Ry (by comparison Jesse Ed Davis's tone is a little thinner and more metallic).
Just in passing, there are a couple of other great rocking slide parts by Ry on two tracks by Ron Nagle called 'Capricorn Queen' and '61 Clay'. Both tracks are on Nagle's album 'Bad Rice' and it is well worth hearing these, too (if you do not already know these tracks).
Johnny rivers also produced an album for him, where the flip side of this came from. The personnel on that has james burton as guitarist. To my ear it sounds like Jesse ed.
shoulda read that. thanks rwells47
try to find out if its the Great Late Eddie Hinton ...could be if it were recorded in Stax, Fame, or American, or Muscles Shoals
One of my favorite CCR songs-sorry John, this is much better!!!
After another listen, I am positive it is maybe Jesse on 2nd guitar, but definitely Ry on lead.
This is the classic Johnny Rivers bunch of session musicians...I would assume that Dean Parks, Larry Knechtel and Hal Blaine are here as well..
Yep the tone sounds like Jesse Ed to me...
Jesse is on there but the solo is definitely Ry Cooder.
I love this version. But of course all due respect to Creedence Clearwater Revival and John Fogerty for the original.
what did Johnny Rivers have to do with this?
He produced it
Nice job...but in some ways....this arrangement kind of reminds me of Proud Mary
but Eddie played rhythm guitar ... he would not have been the slide player.
better than CCR
***** Agree. John Fogarty said it was his favorite of all covers of CCR tunes.
tallguy, the CCR version is still amazing . It was an untouchable classic until Al came along and recorded his version and took it to this amazing level.
Aren't some black men just heavenly? 😊😍
GOOD LORD...this would be so good if we could just get rid of the horns. Great voice, but this is a sort of folk song...no horns needed. That pretty much ruins it.
They are thankful restrained
