This one time me and my dad where out fishing in our boat back in Ontario. It was a fairly windy day but the lake didn't seem to be to bad. As we came from between 2 Island we started hitting some bigger waves but nothing to crazy. Out of the blue we started getting cross waves. It was really hard to keep the boat in control getting slapped from 2 sides with waves. We managed to get to Shore and clean our shorts out.....lol. But a very humbling moment. It's so crazy how one moment everything looks just fine and then Bam 2 foot waves and wind. I never take the force of nature for granted! Great message!
Just last week I went through eye-level cross waves in my kayak, I was looking down to avoid rocks then when I looked up I couldn’t tell what direction was up because I was tilted on a huge wave watching 2 other waves going in different directions, it felt like my brain lost track of my position for a second like floating in space lol
That happened to me last year with my sit on top in the Intercoastal Waterway. Capsized. I learned to tie things down, including my glasses! Glad to see you were safe and made it back safely.
Seen the waves and felt your pain. Your videos inspired me to get a kayak as I sold my boat many moons ago. Got my pelican magna got it all fitted and I was going fishing the next day. Ended up on sylvan lake was a little windy when I launched then boom white caps. Been watching your videos for a long time, keep up the great work. If your ever in the red deer area would definitely head out somewhere with you guys.
@@AnglingSpiders if I can't make it out there with you I can send a couple of pins on that lake for you. There are some monster eyes in there. Happy fishing.
WOW! These prairie lake can be like a sheet of glass one minute and deadly the next. Had my 12 foot aluminum boat in Eagle lake last year, wind came out of no were and we got soaked in minutes from waves over the bow. 3 or 4 years ago a guy drowned at Pine Coulee. I've only fished Dalemead Lake from shore and the wind there is my nemesis especially when I'm fishing the north side and the wind is coming in from the south. Good fishing to you to.
🤘WOOOOO!!! Glad you made it off safely and yes be careful especially after the ice melts on the lakes. The waters are frigid around my parts. I fell in back in 2018, brrrr numbing and freezing cold! I fell in, swam to shore. Then had to go back in to retrieve the Canoe. Not a good situation. Luckily the trail wasn't a long trail back to the vehicle so I was able to get into a toasty warm vehicle but if you're travelling to secluded lakes, please carry a flint striker. Where if you carry a lighter it can be difficult to get it dry with ice cold hands. Strike anywhere Waterproof matches are good to have as well too!! 🤘ROCK ON!! WOOOOO FISHING!!!!!
Good information to pass on. I've had that happen more than once. I prefer rivers or stream in windy weather. It's like you said. The lake can change in a minute.
Glad you're all right! The conditions can change pretty quick for sure. I got caught once in real heavy surf and wind in my small Boston Whaler motorboat and had long and rough time getting in. Great video and God bless!
Great video! U had to be tired after all the paddling! I’ve been offshore when conditions changed for the worse, and it’s not a good feeling. Glad u made it back safe!
Man that’s scary, glad you’re okay! This is why I switched out my kayak for the UltraSkiff. I’m getting too old to risk getting dumped or submerged. Great message for anyone in a yak or smaller craft.👍🏻
Thanks for sharing the video and advise. Still not as bad as my last trip, I twisted my ankle as I fell out of a boat, no fishing for me for a couple weeks.
I was at pine coulee last August out on the lake with my little raft and moter lake was smooth as glass . Then the wind came. No warning just hard blast of wind. I was I shallow but the wind blew me to the middle of the lake. The waves splashing into the raft. Raft trying to flip every time I crested a wave and the wind cought it. Blew all the way to the south end of the lake. My son had to come get me with the truck! Scary as hell when its never happened to you before
Glad you got back safe ,I had a similar situation on a boat alone off the cost of abu Dhabi, flat calm them a weather front moved in 6 ft waves I couldn't orient myself where land was ,had to ca the dockmaster and use whats app pin function and the dockmsdter guided me in...very scary
Wow, that sounds a lot more scary. I have heard many similar stories since posting this. Seems like most people have been in this situation or time or another. Hopefully everyone is wearing a PFD.
Holy crap that was scary! I'm so glad you're ok! I had that happen to me at the lower Chain a couple of years ago with my sit-on-top kayak and tho I was hugging the shore all the way back it took me an hour to get back! The weather is becoming more and more unpredictable as time goes. Good message about being prepared! Thanks for sharing.

Wind is one of my biggest enemies as a fellow kayak fisherman... many a session has been cut short by snotty conditions! Nice job safely getting in shore!
Wow looks like you are out far! lol little to far for me. I JUST got a kayak last week. Pumped to use it magnet fishing and regular fishing now. Mines an open one though. Thought it would be easier for all the gear.
Looks a bit stronger than the average out on Lake Winnipeg, it gets scary from the shore sometimes but took my kayak out on the Red yesterday in some pretty decent wind and let it hit me at the bow, port, stern and starboard, wind was heavy enough to completely counter the current and whitecapping though it just rocked me around broadside it immediately recentered itself. So far I'm liking the Ascend H10, just hate the tracks it comes with and a short 10' kayak that's 31" wide isn't exactly fast but it tracks well enough.
@@AnglingSpiders the H10 is a sit inside, in my opinion it looks somewhere in between a canoe and a kayak with a flat hull and a tunnel down the center, it is extremely bottom heavy which I think is the main factor contribution to it being stable flipping it hull up to load on the car is somewhat difficult alone despite weighing 55lbs because it wants to roll itself into the upright position until both gunwales and less than 90° down and I'm pretty sure that angle is flipping any boat.
That is terrifying I’m glad you handled it like a pro and still remained informative even in that tricky situation!!!!! Very scary stuff glad your tired 😓 but ok 👌
I am glad you know what your doing and how to get back safely. But there are so many that do not. Panic and so many could go across the wind as there destination is left or right of the wind, and before you know it, your over. Kayaks are so affordable too many and it is becoming an increasing past time. I think there should be a basic water safety course with every kayak sold. Take care. Shaun Moore UK.
Thanks, yes I have a lot of experience and am fit. I think there are people that would have been in real trouble. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
That sounds pretty scary. Have purposefully put myself out in similar conditions and stuck near the shore just to see what these pelicans can take. I have a summit 100x. Got waves over the bow. All I can say is that I now carry a hand bildge pump ontop of a bailing scoop, whenever I leave shore now. I may even modify it by filling the back in with flotation foam. Otherwise, was impressed with the stability, even on 3fters!
You aint kidding I was making a video in a kayak last duck season and got into a 16 mph cross wind. I didn't know if I was gonna get out of there but the video didn't look like it was bad at all. Stay safe my friend!
I had an almost similar experience but in an aluminum boat with even higher waves and if I was nervous about that situation, I can imagine the things that went through your mind in this adventure, greetings here as a new subscriber from California
Having been a whitewater and sea kayak paddler for many years I’ve learned many things about being prepared for whatever happens . You always need to act like you might have to swim no matter what . First you should never wear anything cotton looked like you had jeans on . In the paddling world the saying is cotton kills . It not only gets heavy if you swim it does not dry quickly or keep you warm when wet . Spray skirts are great for keeping you and the boat dry but can be hot or at least a sponge and a bilge pump . Problem is if you don’t put on the skirt before you get in the boat good luck putting it on when in the boat . I carry a Perception spray deck in my boat now not only does it prevent sunburn it will keep most of the water out and you can put it on while on the water got it on Amazon .Also keep you PFD on and buckled at all times . Don’t believe me try jumping in the water with the PFD in your hands and then put it on . Most people won’t but because of whitewater paddling I have a reliable roll and it’s saved my butt on the ocean being able to roll back up and stay in the boat . At least practice gettin back into the boat while in the water . Most Rec kayaks have no flotation that’s scary you can buy float bags that are used for WW boats that you stuff in the ends and inflate. Thanks for doing this video people learn from others mistakes and we all make them . Maybe I should make a video about safe kayaking . Happy paddling!
Thanks Mark, yes I did have jeans on and I am not sure why. This is one of the very few trips where I had them on. I have kayak pants I wear most of the time. We always have a PFD on, we have a bucket, sponge and whistle, and we have dry bags that also double as inflatable support for the kayak or person, if needed. We also now stay much closer to shore if there is any breeze. The key is to be prepared, but so many people are buying these for recreational use so we wanted people to know the challenges and be aware of their limits. Thanks for the well thought out comment, very much appreciated.
Went out today for the first time ever kayaking I never work out and I was able to paddle this kayak like nothing with a strong wind on a lake as well hopping I never run into this but till then may the lines be tight brotha
Scary… I just bought a Mission 100 and I never kayaked before! I learned a few things such as tying down everything to the craft, but I wonder how I will react if I flip over. I will always wear a PFD and I am a good swimmer, but I don’t really know how I would self rescue! I guess I will stay close to shore at ALL times…
This situation is literally the reason I chose the Pelican Coast over the Mission. Its a SOT. That said, after watching this I still hope to never have to test that decision. Great advice!
My goodness. That's actually scary to even watch. Knowing if you stop paddling that you would lose all the ground you gained. Glad this video went better than what it could have. Kayak taking on water making it even harder to paddle in. Very alarming but nice info in there
@@AnglingSpiders this is definitely needed just incase someone thinks it's just an easy thing. There are sometimes other factors that can totally change the outcome
The same thing happened to me last weekend, except I wasn’t as lucky. The wind pushed waves over my bow until the cockpit was full and I sank roughly a mile offshore… Learnt a valuable lesson - these pelican 100 series kayaks don’t have a bulk head making them nearly impossible to self recover. I’ve since practiced a few times to see if I could right the kayak and re-enter after it’s been submerged…so far it’s been a no luck situation. Just some food for thought if anyone was considering one of these types of kayak.
Awesome Video and yes you have to keep an eye on the wind. I use a app called windy you can download it from google play and I do believe the apple store
Yup. I've been caught in a thunderstorm out of nowhere once while kayak fishing in the river, and I was quite far from everything. Scary situation but I gotta admit it was a lot of fun too hahah. Not to mention I caught one of my best fish right after
Yep, but a number of reasons that we haven't. First, most sit on tops are quite expensive. Second, I don't have a truck or trailer so would need to continue using the van to haul it and loading and unloading a heavier kayak from the roof top carrier would be a challenge. Maybe some day when I retire!
Good message for all the people who just bought these, thanks for sharing.
Thanks very much

The same thing happened to me last weekend, except I wasn’t as lucky. The wind pushed waves over my bow until the cockpit was full and I sank roughly a mile offshore…
Learnt a valuable lesson - these pelican 100 series kayaks don’t have a bulk head making them nearly impossible to self recover.
I’ve since practiced a few times to see if I could right the kayak and re-enter after it’s been submerged…so far it’s been a no luck situation.
Just some food for thought if anyone was considering one of these types of kayak.
Wow, scary stuff. We will be flipping one later this summer so I might need to test out a few things.
Not the best situation to be in that's for sure. You did the right thing staying calm and getting close to shore.
Thanks, it was a learning experience.
Kinda close there lol but you handled it good Sean you stayed calm glad your safe
Thanks very much, appreciate it
Go Pro's never do justice for how big waves are. From my experience those are some kickers. Always good to see it didn't turn south. ;)
Thanks, hopefully getting out a few times this week as the weather looks a bit better. Thanks for the comment.
Man that came in fast bud glad you made it through that safe . Goes to show always wear your pfd and never underestimate Mother Nature !
You bet, we are never without a pfd
man im glad you got back all safe! Its crazy how it can change so fast, but great video, keep up the good work!
Thank you, appreciate it a lot.
That was sketchy and scary man... Glad you made it safe...
Thanks, appreciate it.
Man I'm glad everything turned out all right be safe
Thank you
Thanks for all the info 👍
No problem 👍
wow hope you had Bilge Pump with you for the water in the kayak.
Nope, that was why I was so concerned. Thanks for watching
Good brother 🙏👍
I like this videos fishing 🙏👍
Thank you 👍
Super footage
Thank you
Awesome Video and yes you have to keep an eye on the wind. I use a app called windy you can download it from google play and I do believe the apple store
Good to know, will have to check it out.
That could have been bad. Kayaks and wind don't mix well. That looked like an exhausting paddle. Long way back too. Glad you made it ok.
Thanks a lot, yep very sore muscles the next day.
Beautiful place 😍
Thanks
Yup. I've been caught in a thunderstorm out of nowhere once while kayak fishing in the river, and I was quite far from everything. Scary situation but I gotta admit it was a lot of fun too hahah. Not to mention I caught one of my best fish right after
Sometimes those conditions can be great for fishing. Thunderstorm on the water would be very scary. Thanks for the comment.
Great advice man! I just sub! Great content
Awesome, thank you!
Keep safe man👍👍be careful always...
Thank you, I will
Have you considered upgrading to a more stable 12’ sit on top yak? They are much easier to fish from then the smaller version you have.
Yep, but a number of reasons that we haven't. First, most sit on tops are quite expensive. Second, I don't have a truck or trailer so would need to continue using the van to haul it and loading and unloading a heavier kayak from the roof top carrier would be a challenge. Maybe some day when I retire!
That looked like the ocean out there
Felt like it too, thanks for the comment.
Hello my friend. Nice Video. Good fishing. Hugs from Brasil.
Thanks for the comment, appreciate it.
Keep safe brother.
Watching from philippines
Thanks, appreciate it.
Glad ur ok fella, if u had had a skirt to keep the water out how would u say the kayak itself paddled and handled the conditions???
Paddled and handled very well, I would have had no concerns if I had a skirt on.
Nice kayak bro👍👍👍
Thank you
Sounds good👍👍
Thanks
