WOW! I think you LOVE Aretha almost as much as I do! I love many singers, but Aretha is my absolute favorite singer! The vocal skills and soulfulness she had shown throughout her career, are majestic and masterful! You stated it all so well. Aretha's versatility has proven to me, that she can practically sing anything! She's the G.O.A.T., in my opinion!

Why anyone would ever compare Patti’s horrid sound to such beauty is beyond me, but this performance alone shows why she was always in a different idiom than all below her.

Yes, this is deep and the reason why she has no rivals. Her new post-smoking high voice from around 1994 must have been quite an annoyance to those who thought she was a spent force in 1991 when her high voice was seriously diminished after decades of smoking. I loved her from 94 to 2007 - talk about a comeback..!!

Babyface knew only Queen Aretha could do justice to this classic certainly not Patti or Chaka only Queen Aretha

The fact that she recorded this song in one take is amazing.

Aretha Franklin had a rough patch vocally before she recorded this track. Years of smoking started bothering her voice. She rested for a while stopped smoking and then came back with Willing to Forgive Deeper Love and Honey. The surprise was Hurts like Hell. Her range and vocal nuances were out of this world because we were used to her singing in her lower register and didn't believe she could hit higher notes again. She did it on record and then live several times. Long live Ms. Ree. RIP.

Yes by 1994 her 'new' post-smoking high voice - though obviously different to her high voice in her 20s and 30s - was immense and penetrative beyond the reach of other singers. Here she is greasy beyond compromise and showed why she is without rival.

MOST of Aretha’s songs were done in ONE take: that’s factual. That Aretha could do that, simply blows me away. Aretha was not just a singer, she was a gifted, professional singer. Aretha was 53 when she recorded Hurts Like Hell. Get that, 53! She was still blowing out hits.
Btw, Mr President, would you please, please, please find the tune YOU recorded by the Queen? 🙏🏽Trust me, you’ll love it. I’ve requested bf, I’m going to keep requesting because I definitely want you to hear it. Thanks in advance.

This is why all other singers trail in her wake and eat the crumbs that fall from the Queen's table.

@AwItsjessye Sorry, I love Patti, but Patti doesn't have a greater range than Aretha had! Patti could hit a higher and more powerful note than Aretha, especially as the years passed. But please don't forget, that Patti has practically no bottom range in her voice. Aretha couldn't hit Patti's top notes, but Patti couldn't hit Aretha's low notes! Aretha's voice could hit more notes on a piano, than what Patti could hit. Patti's theatrics and how she engages with her audiences made her more visually entertaining to me. But the glorious, soulful and soothing singing that I heard at an Aretha Franklin concert, no other singer could top, imo! Overall, they both offered skills and abilities that one had, and the other did not!

Omg! I didn’t know she had performed this song live 😳! Like you said that soundtrack was epic but that was the song that had me on lock, and didn’t even know the song got nominated, I had it on repeat for the longest. Even though the Queen is known for one takes, I was still shocked when Babyface confirmed that she did it in one take. My girl took her voice high, low and in between on that track, and omg the details…the sad lil “hahaha” took me out 😭just genius.
