  • In this video, I spent some time with the new Fujinon 30mm tilt shift lens and the Fujifilm GFX 100 version 2 camera. I travel to Port Renfrew on the west coast of Vancouver Island in search of autumn colour and photograph a beautiful little waterfall on Vancouver Island. I always thought that it's the photographer that uses the camera to take that one picture. The camera can't do it on it's own. Everyone says this camera or that is the best. I've learned that I am needed to make the picture. Thanks for your posting here.

    Absolutely beautiful shots, had mine Friday just gone, it is indeed a beast of a lens. Weight aside I have found that the resolving power and sharpness of the lens is amazing, better than the 20-35. Going back to one of your previous videos, this lens is more about the process for me as at the end of the day (as you pointed out) I can get a lot of the effect of this lens with focus stacking. I found myself using shift a lot when I was in North Wales this weekend. Yes it's a luxury Item and I sold a lot of other gear to raise the funds. My biggest grip is the fact you need 105mm filters.

    This is my methadone this fall, due to all my worlshops and seminars I cant get out to the nearest waterfall area. Instead I am watching you whilst working on my learning materials. Thanks yet again for inducing chronic wanderlust. I love those warterfall shoots. Hard to believe that even with the CP38 you couldnt get high enough though.

    We have a ton of waterfalls here in Michigan. I have been trying to get a certain moody feel to my shots as yet unsuccessful. Then I see your original shot of the waterfall with the two trees across it and that's mostly what I'm looking for but haven't been able to replicate yet. Love the new ones and especially the last one of sunset on the shore. Great video and love your explanations.

    I agree with the issue of weight when hiking. A year ago I wild camped in the Lake District, UK, with some camera gear, and of course, also had tent, sleeping gear, stove etc to take. Combined with the camera gear, I was touching 20kg, which is a lot to drag up the side of a mountain when your no longer in your 20’s & 30’s!
    This set me off on a mission to reduce the weight of my camera gear, as my camping gear was already purchased for its relative light weight. My 50r is my preferred landscape body, so don’t want to contemplate ditching that. I’ve settled on adapting a Nikon 28PC lens as my wide angle, primarily due to its light weight. I have the GF 50, 100 & 100-200 lenses to chose between, but have settled on taking an adapted Olympus 100/2 I think as it’s more compact and lighter than the GF100, and surprisingly, seems more consistent across the frame vs the GF100-200, and is also lighter & more compact that the GF100-200. I would just like to identify a light 300mm now…..but then it becomes a decision between GF100-200 vs separate 100 & 300mm lenses.

    The obvious advantage of the Tilt/shift is also that you can shoot more wide open aperture, faster shutterspeed. Where you else would shoot at a much lower aperture.

    2.5 years in with the GFX100s and have only had to focus stack a handful of images. Of course waterfalls and wind pose their own particular problems. Up to f22 is usable if needed and although a bit soft is lost with a bit of sharpening and downsizing to normal print dimensions. Careful choice of the focus point and reference to the DOF range on the displayed focus scale gets everything you want in acceptable focus for almost all situations and I rarely need to go above f16. Nice looking lens but like you I'm carrying enough with 2 bodies and a pile of zooms as it is .... Great images .... as usual !

    Great images. really like the one at 3:59. While the thought of a TS lens is cool, I've never been able to mentally justify the expense (esp. the GFX TS) and added weight when it's relatively easy to just focus stack on the rare occasion I need to do so. That or have an element of the image that's not 100% pin sharp, but in print is sharp enough. For those with the $$$ though and the style that always requires stacking then I get it

    Thanks for the info on the 30mm T/S lens. I've been highly interested, although I'll wait until next year to purchase if I do decide to get it. For now, the 23mm f/4 will have to do (I got it less than 6 months before the 20=35 came out :( )

    very nice video thx for that. About the focusstacking...Do you use PS for that ? I find it never does a good job which patchy selections. So I always have to go in and adjust the masks. Then I use Helicon focus mostly with jpgs since the Tifs are ginormous, but the corrections there are very tedious in terms of interface. Do you do it just by hand in PS ? cheers from Germany

    How do you find the tilt shift lens for the shifted plane of focus so you can lessen the need for focus stacking? Do you think that focus stacking in software will lead to tilt shift lenses disappearing from the camera market?

    • @tamasnemeth2161
      @tamasnemeth2161 8 месяцев назад

      The focus will always be some sort of region. Tilting the lens will only help when you want to place the focus on a non-paralell plane (eg near foreground on the bottom, distant hills/sky on the top). On the forest scenes Adam is shooting it is quite often that the near foreground appears on the top section (for example trees) of the photograph. For those cases there is no other way, but to capture a focus sequence.
      I got to the part of the video where Adam explains the exact same problem (at 14:54).

    • @colmpharrellphoto
      @colmpharrellphoto 8 месяцев назад +2

      Tilt shift lens are primarily used for architecture photography these days. While you can correct convergence in photoshop, it does mean throwing away pixels. I'd imagine there will always be professional architecture photographers who prefer tilt shift lens

    • @tamasnemeth2161
      @tamasnemeth2161 8 месяцев назад +4

      @@colmpharrellphoto I shift my lens quite often for landscape subject as well - and I do believe I'm not unique. By shifting the lens, and pointing the camera downwards, the perspective will increase the height of the mountains on the image, which is a nice cheat to increase the punch, imo.

    • @QuietLightPhoto
      @QuietLightPhoto  8 месяцев назад

      I don't think the TS lenses will disappear, just as large format cameras haven't died yet. I loved this lens and could definitely see the potential plus its super fun to use. For me though I just dont think I could put up with the weight.

  • @ClickDecoClick
    @ClickDecoClick 8 месяцев назад

    I will have to say that is not a Tilt/Shift lens for architecture because its too long for that. Most lenses used in architecture for interiors and for corrected perspective exteriors are some where in between 20mm and 28mm. When talking about T/S lenses Canon is king with 5 different focal lengths from 17mm and 24mm for architecture, a 50mm for general use an a 90mm and a 135mm more for food and product photography, but they are not mirrorless lenses so will require an adapter to go to a mirrorless camera. They are not light to cary and they are all manual focus that is not a problem when you are on a tripod and you are shooting landscapes, architecture or table top on a studio or location. Nikon has some too but not great ones. If Fuji is a must, for you there is an adaptor that will give you Tilt and shift but combined with a lens and camera to go with it it may be an issue if carrying with it is a factor. If you can carry extra weight it does work great. When sooting landscapes with T/S lenses I often use them too to do stitched panoramic high resolution shots and I love the look of it, its really simple to do and a nice card to pull out your sleeve.

      You mention 20-28mm on a Canon full frame ….. But this a 30mm on medium format, which is 24mm equivalent on full frame?

    • @ClickDecoClick
      @ClickDecoClick 8 месяцев назад

      True, it's a different format of camera. But tilt and shift lenses are different to other lenses because the circle of illumination is larger to that the one of a non tilt and shift lens. The conversion factor is not the same for all depending on the proportions of the rectangle of each format too. A full frame 35mm is a 2:3 rectangle and cropped 645 (medium format) is a less rectangular 3:4 proportion witch changes the angle of view significantly between a Canon full frame 35 24mm T/S lens and a Fuji Cropped 645 Medium Format 30mm T/S lens. But that's all very technical, what matters most is the finished image and the photographer that judges it.@@grantnewton5705
